Dear Canfield Community,

Reflecting on my first year as your Superintendent, I must admit that I was unsure of exactly what this school year was going to look like. Meeting with you virtually in August, I rolled out our restart plan, protocols, and explained that we would start with in-person learning and a new K-12 Cardinal Digital Academy for those that did not feel comfortable returning. I talked about remote learning possibilities. I wondered if we would even make it out of September. But we did. Amazed...but never surprised! Then came the holidays, and I wondered if we would make it through and

we did. Next, I was really concerned that we would not finish the year after spring break, but we did! We did it together. Amazed...but never surprised in Canfield! Well done Cardinals.

As mentioned numerous times over the school year, we would not have been able to make it through the year without help from our parents. You were amazing! We finished the year in person because despite the social distancing, masks, desk shields, temperature station, and dreaded quarantines, our entire educational community came together and gave their best! For this, I thank you.

As I look ahead to the 2021-2022 year, I am excited for a few curriculum changes. First and foremost, we will be welcoming Mr. John Vitto to a new role in the district as Assistant Superintendent/Curriculum Director. He will be facilitating several new initiatives such as STEM in both elementary schools. We will welcome a new teacher in this role and are adding maker spaces. Additionally, the elementaries will be implementing a new phonics curriculum. Our middle school is adding an 8th grade STEM class with an engineering focus as well as expanding the Health/Wellness class to include careers and digital citizenship. Our

high school is adding a Building Trades Pre-Apprentice Program thanks to a grant we received. Finally, the Cardinal Digital Academy curriculum is shifting focus to select 9-12 grade students with special circumstances. We will not be using our own teachers as we believe they are needed in our classrooms for face to face instruction.

Our district will begin Strategic Planning which will guide us into 2027. The first step in this process is an online survey for our community to provide us with valuable information. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey on our district website by the end of July. A committee will be formed of community members, parents, staff, and students who will use the survey information as a guide while creating a comprehensive plan with measurable objectives and goals. The plan will ultimately serve as a tool for decision making and resource allocation. In closing, thank you so much for the warm welcome to Canfield. It was an amazing school year. I would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer break!

THANK YOU!

Thank you students, staff, parents, and community members for your understanding and cooperation during this school year. What’s your word? Canfield High School selected “connected” as its’ word. Each student selected one word that’s closely tied to their personal thoughts, values, and perspective on life. The word is intended to help students stay grounded and connected to what matters to most. Student volunteers, like Stephen Maszczak, created a word bracelet for each student. This connective activity is part of the social emotional learning focus in the school district. Twenty CHS students

participated in the Drowsy Chaperone.

Esports is competitive, organized video gaming and Canfield Village Middle School recently began an Esports Club. Currently, there are four teams that compete with other middle school students from Ohio and other states. As the team continues to grow, additional esports roles such as shoutcaster (the person who provides live commentary on video games), IT specialist, statistician, graphic designer, and video streamers will be added.

I would like to take a moment to share a few thoughts & sentiments on behalf of Hilltop. I want to thank you for your kindness, grace, and cooperation as our faculty and staff members worked to provide quality learning experiences for our students and to support their efforts to learn online and in person. I am grateful for your joy, astute insights and amazing talents. Best wishes to our graduating fourth graders, whom I will miss greatly—please come back and visit. Until next school year, here’s wishing you love, laughter and learning.

Isabella DeLucia designed her solar oven to capture the sun’s energy to cook her s’more. She decided that plastic was needed to trap in the sun’s heat energy to help and melt her chocolate and marshmallows. Students evaluated their original models to see if they needed to make design changes for a better outcome.

Mrs. Amodio’s class learned about the sun’s energy and how it meets the needs of living things. In order to experience this idea, the students were given a sunflower kit that contained a pot, soil, and a sunflower seed. The students grew their seed and journaled how their plant progressed from a seed to a full grown sunflower.

SPECIAL SERVICES UPDATE...

PBIS is a prevention framework that uses a continuum of evidence-based behavioral and social-emotional supports and interventions for all students, vulnerable students, and students with significant needs. Canfield Local Schools PBIS Mission Statement

Canfield Local Schools strives to improve outcomes for all students that foster their growth academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. Using a multi-tiered framework of support and evidence-based practices, our educators will promote strong interpersonal relationships in a positive, predictable, and safe environment through teaching, modeling, and encouragement.

Each PBIS building team comprises a facilitator, data specialist, SEL specialist, trauma specialist, and culturally responsive practices specialist. Each team has a parent/community representative and student representatives at CVMS and CHS. Our PBIS trauma specialists participated in the Eighth Annual Trauma-Informed Care Virtual Summit in May. PBIS building teams have been busy planning for PBIS training in the buildings. Next year, our PBIS building teams will be training their peers on PBIS and implementing or refining the 9 essential components of PBIS:

1. Administrative commitment & consistent involvement 2. Established team-based structures

3. Consensus on (3-5) behavioral expectations 4. Systematic teaching of behavioral expectations 5. System for reinforcing desired behaviors 6. System for correction of behavioral errors 7. Data-based decision making

8. Multi-tiered system of behavioral supports 9. Maintains culturally responsive practices

CLSD has partnered with the ESC of Eastern Ohio in a prevention grant. As part of this grant and PBIS, all of our K-5 staff participated in training in the implementation of the PAX Good Behavior Game in May. The PAX Good Behavior Game® is an evidence-based set of strategies to help students learn important self-management skills while collaborating to make their classroom a peaceful and productive learning environment. With adult facilitation, students create a word-map of what they would see, hear, do, and feel more of and less of in a wonderful classroom. The things that would happen more often in their wonderful classroom are called PAX (Peace, Productivity, Health and Happiness).

Next year, we will continue and expand our partnership with Valley Counseling Services, Alta Behavioral Healthcare, and the ESC of Eastern Ohio for social-emotional learning and supports.

As a local school district, we have the responsibility to identify and evaluate all children with disabilities. A preschool child, between the ages of 3-5, is defined as having a disability if he or she has a documented deficit in one or more of the following areas: communication skills, hearing, motor functioning, social-emotional/behavior difficulties, or vision impairment. For school age children, ages 5-21, a child may qualify for special services if he or she has a disability in one or more of the following areas: autism, developmental disability, behavioral/emotional, speech/ language, multi-disabilities, specific learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, health or orthopedic improvement, or vision/hearing disabilities.

Early observations and records help an evaluation team find appropriate programs and services prior to the child entering school. If you have a child up to age 21 years of age or younger who has, or is suspected of having a disability, please return this form to:
