Master of Science in Environmental Health

Program Objectives

1. To train environmental health professionals who are capable of designing environmental health legislation, standards and guidelines related to environmental health disciplines.

2. To train environmental health professionals who are cable of developing and executing appropriate low cost environmental health technologies for communities 3. To produce competent environmental health professionals that will be engaged in

teaching environmental health in health training schools and other settings.

4. To train environmental health managers who are capable of planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring and evaluating environmental health services and programs in theMinistry of Health and other governmental and non-governmental sectors in the country.

5. To train professionals on aspects of applied research with adequate insight to solve the existing problems.

6. To produce professionals who are able to develop and use appropriate technology relevant to existing situation of Ethiopia.

7. To produce professionals that can respond to existing and emerging environmental health issues at different sectors

8. To produce professionals who can involve in environmental policy and decision making system at various levels

9. To produce professionals that are able to undertake basic and applied researches in Environmental Health area

10. To produce professionals that will ensure sustainable development in the nation

Graduate Profile

Graduates of Master of Science in Environmental Health are going to be involved in:

 Teaching at higher education institutions in Environment and Health and public health related areas

 Providing consultancy services for different organizations in areas of Ecotoxicology, Food safety, disease ecology, waste management and related area

 Providing consultancy services for different organizations in areas of Ecotoxicology, Food safety, Ecology, Waste management and related area

 Undertake Environmental Impact Assessment on area which need the study

 Will be involved in policy and decision making in Environmental health related problems

 Work in industries and other occupational settings as hygienists

Upon completion of the 2 years course program in EST, the graduate is expected to work as:

1. Water and sanitation technologist

2. Solid and liquid waste treatment/ management technologist 3. Ecologist and Environmental conservationist

4. Environmental impact assessment specialist 5. Educator and researcher

6. A resource person in sampling and analysis of environmental pollutants 7. Quality control expert

8. Environmental engineer

Admission Requirement

Bachelor degree graduates who have pursued a minimum of three years of higher education institution in the fields of health sciences (BSc in Environmental Health, BSc in Nursing, BSc in Laboratory Technology, BSc in Pharmacy, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dentistry, BSc in Health Officer, BSc in Health Education, BSc in other health related fields . Candidates shall pass the entrance exam prepared by the department to be enrolled as an MSc Environmental Health student. In addition, other rules and regulations of the university shall be implemented.

Duration of the program

The training will be given for two years. If a candidate is failed to finish his thesis in two years, he/she will be given one more year to accomplish the remaining courses. Otherwise the rules and regulations of the university will be strictly applied.

Graduation requirement

 A graduate student must sustain a minimum CGPA of 3.00 at the end the study period.

 A graduate must obtain a maximum of one C grade in non-specialty courses as well as in CBTP, DTTP and Graduating thesis.

 Other rules and regulations of the University will be applied.

General teaching and learning methods

The general teaching methods for this MSc program in Environmental Health is more of practical and student centred. The minimum attachment will be the lecturing system with frequent seminars which will be handled independently by students. There will be more laboratory and experimental field works according to the need of the specific course. Students will have an opportunity of eLearning through the university’s platform. In addition modular systems and professional attachments to different actual workings, the community based teaching strategies (CBTP and DTTP) will be also implemented.
