Issue 26 Autumn 2021
INCORPORATED
Our CHCAG Annual General Meeting was held Thursday, 11th March with 24 members in attendance. As usual, all positions were dissolved and new nominations were called for.
Ken Pay stood down as President. Ken held the position of President for the past four years and we would all agree, Ken has been a constant pres-ence at the gallery, always involved, not only with planning but also with the physical demands necessary to ensure all exhibitions, workshops, fund raising and building matters were addressed.
On behalf of all members, we thank you Ken, your efforts are much appreciated and we continue to have your input and mentoring in your new position as Vice President. Sue Roberts was elected unap-posed as President. Sue is well known to all, an active member, constantly involved in the gallery and very enthusiastic. We’re sure Sue will excel in the position as President, ably assisted by Ken.
Colleen Little stood down as Class Coordinator. Colleen took on the posi-tion in 2017 and has done an exemplary job over the period, a tireless worker, thorough and attentive to detail. As Coordinator, Colleen introduced us to many new and exciting artists, organ-ised workshops and was always on the lookout for new talent to help prog-ress the skills of all members. Thank you Colleen, your efforts are much appreciated. Our incoming President Sue, was also elected unopposed as Class Coordinator. We’re sure Sue can rely on Colleen in the future for help and advice if the need arises.

Linda came prepared on the day with enough natural fibres for everyone. She had collected most of it from her’s and other gardens, parks and bushland in her neighbour-hood. She is a great believer in collecting natural basket fibres wherever she finds them, be they weeds, flowers, shrubs or native plants, whenever the opportunity arises.
This was a great workshop to start off the year. Using only natural fibres and a great deal of enthusiasm we began to learn the simple (or for some not so simple) pat-tern for the weave itself. By morning tea, we had the basic bones of the dilly bag we were making well underway.
It was a very calming experience for most of the participants and as the day grew so did the dilly bags. Using a variety of natural commercial fibres Linda had also brought along, our developing baskets took on a wide range of sizes and colourful designs. By the afternoon most dilly bags were either finished or well underway.
The dilly bag was only a small example. Once you have mastered the technique, the size and style of
baskets that can be made is only dependant on the imagination, the type and amount of fibres collected!
Everyone was of the opinion it was a great way to relax and the resultant dilly bags were amazing. A big thank you to Linda for all her fibre col-lecting and her unwavering enthusiasm on the day.

The Printmakers are continuing to enjoy the oppor-tunity to meet and indulge their passion for all things inky. Some new members, and many returning mem-bers have just completed a 6-week Drypoint Etching class with tutor Catherine Eadie on Thursday mornings.
This class will now be followed by a 4-week class with Christine Courcier-Jones in the art of Collagraphs, a creative form of printmaking using inexpensive natural materials to wonderous effects as Christine’s prints demonstrate. Thursday afternoons are attracting many print members who are appreciating having access to the press and enjoy working in the supportive small group environment.
We were excited to have Mo Godbeer return to run an Encaustic Mixed Media workshop in February. Mo skilfully presented the endless pos-sibilities of encaustic art making, an ancient artform that dates as far back as ancient Greece and Egypt. Encaustic is a Greek word mean-ing “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Heat is used throughout the pro-cess, from melting the beeswax and varnish to fusing the layers of wax.
On Saturday Mo eased us into learning the basics of using the melted beeswax to create a textured encaustic board, how to apply colour, scraping back areas we wanted to change, and mastering the gas
flame to fuse each layer together. Sunday, we learnt how to create a smooth encaustic board, which I think most agreed took more prac-tice and skill. But once a smooth surface was achieved, Mo demon-strated a plethora of techniques so we could add our own artistic pref-erences and style to our surfaces.
The class of 12 were treated to a smorgasbord of materials to experiment with, from gold/silver/ bronze leaf and foils, pan pastels, crayons, charcoal, ink, stencils, oil paints, image transfers using Joss paper and photocopies, a variety of incising tools from hole
punches to chains, to add interest-ing marks and patterns to our work.
Mo taught us that “there are no mistakes in Encaustic, only opportunities” and as a newbie to Encaustic I quickly became hooked. No one was more surprised than I was to go home with four com-pleted works after only 2 days!
I can’t wait to keep experimenting with Encaustic and I would recom-mend anyone who wants to give it a try to dive in and have fun experimenting with the wonderful world of Encaustic.
Thanks Mo and we look for-ward to you coming back again.

February 2nd I was contacted by ABC Mid North Coast Radio for an interview regarding our upcoming Flowers and Gardens exhibition. I also spoke about the beginnings of the Art Group in the 1960s and our planned Retrospective Exhibition, our classes, workshops, demon-stration mornings and our upcoming Local Faces exhibition being held in conjunction with the CanDo Cancer Trust fundraiser. This approach came from our details appearing on the Arts Mid North Coast website.
We had 42 artworks on display in the Fabulous Fakes exhibition with the “People’s Choice” award by pop-ular vote going to Sue Roberts for her piece, “Study of Flowers” in a glass
vase, after artist John Constable. Flowers and Gardens is another great display of members’ work and is on show until March 17th, with 91 entries in total. To date, 9 pieces have been sold and Mary Abbott has sold 5 pieces from her Artist of the Month dis-play. Congratulations to our members who sold work and to all our members who entered. Without these works there would not be an exhibition, not to mention the forthcoming sales.
Local Faces, portraits of local people exhibition, will be open-ing Sunday, March 21st, combined with the CanDo Cancer Trust fund-raising afternoon tea, from 1-5pm. Thanks go to our outgoing presi-dent Ken Pay for organising this
challenging exhibition and Mary Abbott for organising the fundraiser.
We have a NO-PHOTOGRAPHY sign on display in the gallery, as approved at the last committee meet-ing. This is about protecting our members’ copyright on their artworks. As an artist, you may of course, give permission for your work to be photographed. Our exhibition entry form will cover this aspect.
The Coffs Harbour Show is expected to be held this year at the end of April and we will once again steward the Fine Art Section. Sponsors have been contacted and a prominent local artist has agreed to judge the show.

2021 started off strongly with members enjoying a well-attended workshop on 13 February. Cris Matthes tutored the group in the art of Zentangles and use of the vari-ous patterns in decorative lettering. On 13 March Paivi Ranta provided an introduction to using Pilot Parallel Pens, explained the various uses of these convenient pens and out-lined pen cleaning techniques. The Coffs Calligraphers’ diary of monthly workshops for this year has been finalised and members are looking forward to learning new calligraphic skills during the remainder of the
year, with topics including Gothic with Attitude, Batarde Script, Modern Pointed Pen and Brush Lettering. The monthly workshops in the second half of the year will have the overar-ching theme of “Taste of the Orient”. A calligraphic “Prompt” exer-cise will be conducted throughout 2021, in which individual members work on a page each at home each month, with the finished pages to be bound into books in a workshop at the end of the year. The first prompt is “Lunch” - we anticipate some interesting interpretations!
My interest in calligraphy sparked from admiring a display by Coffs Calligraphers at South Grafton High School in December 1990, where my two daughters were students at the time. Soon after, as a surprise gift for me, my husband Les con-tacted Colleen Little in Coffs Harbour, arranged my membership of Coffs Calligraphers and purchased a kit of calligraphy supplies. For many years prior I had dabbled with pot-tery, having my own wheel and kiln at home – I suspect that my husband saw calligraphy as a new interest for me, to relieve him from helping me with the many all-night firings of the pottery kiln! At that time we were
both working full time and involved after hours in our daughters’ hockey and musical activities, so life was very busy. Now retired, we are still busy and loving life as grandparents.
Calligraphy has certainly overtaken my pottery interest. I continue to look forward to my monthly pilgrimage from South Grafton (or Red Rock) to Coffs Harbour for the companionship, lessons and workshops conducted by Coffs Calligraphers. My initial “callig-raphy kit” has grown from being stored in a re-purposed fishing tackle box 30 years ago, to now filling a whole room in our house! My “Jabiru” sculp-ture, a combination of calligraphy, metalwork and woodwork produced in 2008 for Coffs Calligrapher’s exhi-bition at the Bunker Gallery, is still gathering dust in our living room. I often wonder how on earth I found the time to produce it, but it was an enjoyable challenge at the time.
My longtime friend and neigh-bour in South Grafton, Cris Matthes, has “caught the calligraphy bug”. Cris is also an active member of Coffs Calligraphers and we reg-ularly travel together to Coffs.
One of my treasured possessions is the complete set of “Kalligraphia – for the Love of Letters” magazines from April 1992 to December 2008. The magazines were published quarterly by an extremely dedicated
small group of Coffs Calligraphers – lead by Jim Bird, Barbara Wallace, Colleen Little, Maxine Kohlhagen and Robyn Lawrence. These stal-wart members did a mammoth job compiling, printing and binding the Kalligraphia magazines, after writing and rallying articles for inclusion in the magazine. I still enjoy browsing through the very informative publi-cations (the Kalligraphia magazines are in the Coffs Calligraphers’ Library at the CHCAG – check them out!).
Reflecting on my membership of Coffs Calligraphers, the many highlights have included partic-ipating in numerous workshops tutored by renowned overseas and Australian calligraphers (including our very own Colleen Little); the Coffs Calligraphers 20th Anniversary formal celebrations in 2007; Quota’s annual “Craftarama”; Coffs Calligraphers annual Christmas celebrations with members and partners (they were a lot of fun!); Coffs Calligraphers moving its “base” from the Community Village to the CHCAG (and the much improved facilities); and of course, our monthly workshops/classes and the friendships I have made through meeting members of Coffs Calligraphers during the last 30 years – too many to name, but I do appre-ciate all of you, thank you every one!

In the class sessions we will learn about: colour theory and what complementary,
tint, monochromatic, tone, shade, analogous and other terms mean in a practical sense. We will also learn: pointillist styles, blending colours, smudging and use of the paper’s textures to enhance your work before finally fixing the pastel and optimising the composition by using coloured mats and framing to present your work.
David is a well known artist and teacher whose experience covers many genres. He acknowledges that we all have preferred or favourite mediums and these may change over time. He has his own two favourites of which, one is pastels. He says that the immediacy of Pastels for drawing and sketching, along with the huge colour range, makes it a very versatile and fun medium.
For the more experienced students: The essential qualities of pastels as a basic
sketching tool like charcoal, is always there as a method to practice eye, hand and brain coordination... and practice makes perfect!
