Music Department News

The school year has been off to a great start and the music department has hit the ground running. Here are some dates that our high school students will be out singing with the community.

On October 17, four of our choir students will be participating in Monroe Community College's first annual High School Honors Choir. They will sing with a world-renowned conductor and other students from the community. This is an all-day event, in which students will be rehearsing and learning about the composers. A free concert to the public begins at 7:30 p.m. This is a concert you won't want to miss. In December, our students will be participating in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) Holiday Pops High School Chorale for the second year. This event has multiple dates, posted below. This is a lovely family holiday event; Santa even makes an appearance. The students love seeing the support of staff, parents, and community members. Thanks for all your support of the music department.

The Boys’ Varsity Soccer team also held a Senior Night recently, honoring its seven seniors on Wednesday, October 14. Superintendent’s Conference Day a Huge Success

The Superintendent’s Conference Day held on October 9provided an opportunity for teachers to come together to gain important professional development centered on student learning. Teachers at the

secondary building read articles on the importance of explicit vocabulary instruction as well as had the chance to share instructional practices pertaining to content-specific and academic vocabulary. The afternoon provided further opportunity for teachers to work on and develop Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) as part of the school’s continuous improvement process centered on student growth. Many teachers reported to

administration that the day was an excellent opportunity to hone their craft.

Middle/High School Host Parent Curriculum Night

On Wednesday, October 7, the secondary building hosted a Parent Curriculum Night designed for parents to come in to see the building, meet teachers, and learn about academic offerings. About 100

parents were in attendance and many commented on how well the night flowed. Among the activities was the opportunity for parents to learn about and register their student for Dual Credit opportunities that exist through a partnership with Monroe Community College. Registered students earn both high school and college credit at a significantly reduced rate. The school looks forward to continued

feedback on the evening so that the event next year is even better.

Join Us for Parent Universities

In response to your interest in learning about current topics, we are continuing to offer Parent Universi-ty workshops this school year. On Tuesday, October 20, 2015, Debra Ortiz-Pardi from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will present on the topic of “Keeping Children Safer on the Internet.” This workshop is from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the T. J. Connor Cafetorium. More infor-mation about the session is included in this Electronic Newsletter.

We also encourage you to join us on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, for a discussion of “Understanding and Coping with Anxiety.” Orlee Stekel-Perna, LCSW-R, clinical social worker with training and experi-ence in family therapy and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with mental health needs, developmental disabilities, and traumatic experiences, will present on the issue of anxiety. She will discuss the complex issue of anxiety and how it impacts people’s lives. This workshop will occur in the Middle/High School Library with separate sessions for parents of students in grades K-6 (6:00 – 7:00 p.m.) and 7-12 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m.). Childcare is available for these wonderful opportunities.

Kindergarten Visits Stokoe Farms

Kindergarten students went on their first field trip. They traveled to Stokoe Farms to learn about the farm animals. They took a wagon ride and picked a pumpkin. They learned about how pumpkins grow

on a vine versus apples that grow on trees. Everyone enjoyed climbing the haystack and bouncing on the trampolines.

First Graders Visit Scottsville Free Library

Recently T. J. Connor first graders visited the Scottsville Library for a special tour of the Library. Students were introduced to the children’s section of the library and listened to a story read by Mrs. Pizarro, Library Clerk

and mom of a first grader. They also had a chance to view the stuffed bird collection, the Wall of Honor, and the “trap door” that was used during productions when the library was a playhouse. The visit includes a special visit to the Scottsville History Room. The students happily walked back to school with a bookmark and application for a library card.

First Grade Visits Nature Center

T. J. Connor first-grade students went for a fall nature walk at Genesee Country Nature Center. They saw a variety of animal and plant life, and learned about the vernal pond.

Right now, the pond is very dry, but in the spring it will be full of water. The students can’t wait to return to the pond in the spring to observe all the changes that have happened over the winter.

Fourth Graders Study Crayfish

Fourth-grade students practiced the humane treatment of animals while they studied crayfish. They learned about the physical and behavioral adaptations of crayfish, their inherited and acquired traits, and how experiments can be used to study a living organism. Students devised a way to test
