About SmartSystems Reporting Services

The SmartSystems Reporting Services allow you to view:

Battery Replacement Reports, which shows you a list of batteries with a manufacture date, number of hours the battery has been used, high and low temperatures, and overall battery health mesurement.

Intermec Equipment Listing Reports, which shows you a list of Intermec devices that have been discovered by SmartSystems console.

Intermec Software Version Reports, which shows you all Intermec computers and the versions of Intermec software installed.

Software Exception Reports, which shows you any out-of-date software that is installed on your device.

Use this installation guide to help you install SmartSystems Reporting Services onto your desktop PC. For more information about SmartSystems Reporting Services, see the SmartSystems Foundation Online Help.

Reporting Services Installation Requirements

To use SmartSystems Reporting Services on your PC, you need to do the following:

Verify that SmartSystemsTM Foundation 4.02 or above is installed. For more information, see the SmartSystems Foundation

Installation Guide.

Verify that Microsoft

®

SQL ServerTM 2008 with a Microsoft Reporting Services instance is installed.

If you are currently using SQL Server 2005, you need to perform an upgrade.

If you are currently using SQL Server 2008 without a Reporting Services instance, you need to perform an edition upgrade.

Install a Reporting Services instance.

Configuring the Reporting Services instance.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you need to

configure the User Account Control (UAC) to allow SmartSystems Reporting Services to access and deploy reports.

Install SmartSystems Reporting Services.

Use the following sections to help you install and configure SmartSystems Reporting Services on your PC.

Verifying Your Version of SmartSystems Foundation

Before you can use SmartSystems Reporting Services, you must verify that you have SmartSystems 4.02 or above installed.

To verify your version of SmartSystems Foundation 1 Open the SmartSystems console.

2 Click Help > About. The About screen appears and shows you

what version of SmartSystems Foundation you have installed.

If you do not have SmartSystems Foundation 4.02 or above installed, you can download it for free at the Intermec web site at

www.intermec.com/smartsystems. For information on how to install SmartSystems Foundation, see the SmartSystems Foundation Installation Guide.

Verifying That You Have a Reporting Services Instance

In addition to having SQL Server 2008 with Advanced Services installed, you also need to have a Reporting Services instance installed.

To verify if you have a Reporting Services Instance

Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2008 > Configuration Tools > Reporting Services Configuration Manager. The Reporting Services Configuration Connection

screen appears.

If the Reporting Services Configuration Connection screen does not appear, it means you do not have a Reporting Services instance installed.

Verifying Your Version of SQL Server 2008

To use SmartSystems Reporting Services, you need to have verify that you also have SQL Server 2008 SP1 installed.

To verify your version of SQL Server 2008

1 Select Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2008 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Installation Center. 2 In the left pane, select Tools.

Select Installed SQL Server features discovery report. If the

Database Engine Services version is less than 10.0.2531.0, you need to install SQL Server 2008 SP1. For more information, see “Installing SQL Server 2008 SP1” on page 12.

Upgrading to SQL Server 2008

This section explains how to upgrade your current SQL Server installation to SQL Server 2008 with Advanced Services. If you are currently using:

SQL Server 2005, you need to perform an upgrade.

SQL Server 2008 without a Microsoft Reporting Services instance, you need to perform an edition upgrade.

To perform an upgrade or an edition upgrade of SQL Server 1 Go to www.microsoft.com/downloads, and search for SQL

Server 2008 with Advanced Services.

2 Download the version with the file name

SQLEXPRADV_xxx_ENU.exe.

3 Run SQLEXPRADV_xxx_ENU.exe file. The SQL Server

Installation screen appears.

4 If you are upgrading from SQL Server 2005:

a From the left pane, select Installation.

b Select Upgrade from SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005.

If you are currently using SQL Server 2008 without Reporting Services:

a From the left pane, select Maintenance. b Select Edition Upgrade.

5 When the Setup Support Rules screen appears:

a Check to see if there are any failures. If there are, fix them and continue onto the next step.

b Click OK.

6 When the Product Key screen appears, click Next.

7 When the License Term screen appears:

a Check the I accept the license terms check box. b Click Next.

8 When the Setup Support Files screen appears, click Install. 9 When the Setup Support Rules screen appears:

a Check to see if there are any failures. If there are, fix them and continue onto the next step.

b Click Next.

10 When the Instance to Upgrade screen appears:

a Select the instance you want to upgrade.

b Click Next.

11 When the Select Features screen appears, click Next.

12 When the Instance Configuration screen appears, click Next. 13 When the Disk Space Requirements screen appears:

a Check to see if you have enough disk space for the installation.

b Click Next.

14 When the Upgrade Rules screen appears, click Next.

15 Click Upgrade. When the upgrade finishes, continue to the next

section to install a Reporting Services Instance.

Installing a Reporting Services Instance

This section explains how to install a Reporting Services instance.

To install a Reporting Services instance

1 Run SQLEXPRADV_xxx_ENU.exe file. The SQL Server

Installation screen appears.

2 When the SQL Server screen appears:

a Select Installation from the left pane.

b Choose New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.

a Check to see if there are any failures. If there are, fix them and continue onto the next step.

b Click OK.

4 When the Setup Support Files screen appears, click Install. 5 When the Setup Support Rules screen appears:

a Check to see if there are any failures. If there are, fix them and continue onto the next step.

b Click OK if the rules completed successfully. 6 When the Installation Type screen appears:

a Select Add features to an existing instance of SQL Server 2008.

b Select the instance from the drop-down menu. Common names for instances used with SmartSystems Foundation are

INTERMEC2008, INTERMEC, or SQLEXPRESS.

c Click Next.

7 When the Features screen appears:

a Select Reporting Services.

b Click Next.

8 When the Disk Space Requirements screen appears:

a Check to see if you have enough disk space for the installation.

b Click Next.

9 The Server Configuration screen appears:

a If your computer is connected to a domain, select NT

AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE as the Account Name. Note: Make a note of the instance name since you will need it

for later sections of the installation process.

Note: If Reporting Services is not listed, you need to upgrade to

SQL Server 2008 with Advanced Services. For information on upgrading, see “Upgrading to SQL Server 2008” on page 8.

b If your computer is in a Workgroup or not connected to a domain, select NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE as the

Account Name.

c Click Next.

10 When the Database Engine Configuration screen appears:

a Click Add. The Select Users or Groups screen appears. b Click Advanced. A list of user names appear.

c Click Find Now.

d Select Administrators from the list and click OK. e Click OK to close the Select Users or Groups screen. f Click Next.

11 Select Install, but do not configure the report server and click Next.

12 Click Next when the Error and Usage screen appears. 13 Click Next when the Installation Rules screen appears. 14 Click Install when the Ready to Install screen appears. The

Reporting Services instance installs onto your computer.

15 After the Reporting Services instance is installed, click Next. 16 Click Close when the Complete screen appears.

17 Make sure you have SQL Server 2008 SP1 applied to your new Reporting Services instance, and continue to “Configuring the Reporting Services Instance” on page 13.

If you do not SQL Server 2008 SP1 installed, continue to the next section.

Installing SQL Server 2008 SP1

Use this section to learn how to install SQL Server 2008 SP1 onto your PC.

To install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1

1 Go to www.microsoft.com/downloads, and search for SQL Server 2008 SP1.

2 Download the version with the file name SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-xxxx-ENU.exe.

3 Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2008 > Configuration Tools > Reporting Services Configuration Manager.

4 When the Reporting Services Configuration Connection screen appears:

a Select the SQL Server and Report Server instance that you specified in the previous section.

b Click Connect.

5 On the Report Server Status screen, click the Stop button. 6 Click Exit.

7 Run SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-xxxx-ENU.exe file.

8 When the Welcome screen appears, click Next. 9 When the License Term screen appears:

a Select the I accept the license terms check box. b Click Next.

10 When the Select Features screen appears, click Next. 11 When the Check Files In Use screen appears, click Next. 12 When the Ready to Update screen appears, click Update. The

update progress starts.

Note: The steps in the following procedure may vary slightly based on

14 Click Close.

15 Continue to the next section to configure the Reporting Services Instance.

Configuring the Reporting Services Instance

This section explains how to configure the Reporting Services instance to work with SmartSystems Reporting Services.

To configure the Reporting Services instance

1 Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2008 > Configuration Tools > Reporting Services Configuration Manager.

2 When the Reporting Services Configuration Connection screen appears:

a Select the SQL Server and Report Server that you created.

b Click Connect.

3 If the Report Server is not running, click Start.

4 Select Service Account in the left pane. When the Service Account

screen appears:

a If your PC is connected to a domain, select Network Service.

If your PC is not connected to domain or is in a Workgroup, select Local Service.

b Click Apply.

5 Select Web Service URL in the left pane. When the Web Service

URL screen appears:

a Type in ReportServer for the Virtual Directory. b Click Apply to save your changes.

c Verify that your Report Server Web Service URL is http://computername:80/ReportServer.

Note: The steps in the following procedure may vary slightly based on

6 Select Database in the left pane. a Click Change Database.

b Select Create a new server database. c Click Next.

d Enter the server name and instance name using

(servername\instancename). The value is listed in the upper left corner of the Reporting Service Configuration Manager screen. In the following illustration, the server name is SNH66F3H1,

and the instance name is INTERMEC2008.

e Select Current User - Integrated Security for the

Authentication Type.

f Click Test Connection.

g Click OK if the test succeeded. If it did not, verify the server

name and credentials and try again.

h Click Next.

i Verify the following parameters:

Database Name: ReportServer

Temp Database Name: ReportServerTemp Language: English (United States)

Report Server Mode: Native Mode j Click Next.

k Verify that Service Credentials is selected for the

l Click Next.

m Verify that the information is correct and click Next. The

report server database is created.

n When the configuration is finished, click Finish.

7 Select Report Manager URL in the left pane. When the Report

Manager URL screen appears:

a Verify that the Virtual Directory is named

Reports_instancename. Note that instancename should match

the name listed at the top of the left pane, in this case

instancename is INTERMEC2008.

b Click Apply. A screen telling you that the virtual directory was

created and the URL was successfully reserved appears.

c Click Exit.

8 If you are using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, go to “Installing SmartSystems Reporting Services” on page 17. If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, go to the next section.

Configuring the UAC for Windows 7 or Vista

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, you need to configure the UAC to allow SmartSystems Reporting Services to access and deploy reports.

To configure the UAC for Windows 7 or Vista

1 Click the Start > All Programs and right-click on the Internet Explorer icon.

2 Select Run as Administrator.

4 Click the Security tab in the Internet Options screen.

5 In the Select a zone to view or change security settings window,

select Trusted sites.

6 Click Sites and make sure that the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box is cleared.

7 In the Add this website to the zone: text box, type in your

computer name with the string http://[ComputerName], where

ComputerName is the name of your PC.

8 Click Add. Your PC is added to the list of trusted sites.

9 Click Close. You are brought back to the Internet Options screen. 10 Click Custom level. The Security Settings - Trusted Sites Zone

screen appears.

11 Scroll to User Authentication and select Automatic logon with current user name and password.

12 Click OK to return to the Internet Options screen. 13 Click OK to close the Internet options screen.

14 Browse to http://[ComputerName]/Reports_[InstanceName]

where the ComputerName is the name of your PC, and InstanceName is the name of your Report Server instance.

15 If you have installed SQL Server 2008, select the Properties tab

and click New Role Assignment.

If you have installed SQL Server 2008 R2, click Folder Settings > New Role Assignment.

16 Add the current user as the Content Manager. For example:

[ComputerName]\[LoginName] or [Domain]\[LoginName]. 17 Click Site Settings.

18 Select Security.

19 Click New Role Assignment

20 Add the current user as a System Administrator. For example:

21 Close Internet Explorer. You have added the current user as the Content Manager. Continue to the next section to learn how to install SmartSystems Reporting Services.

Installing SmartSystems Reporting Services

This section explains how to install the SmartSystems Reporting Services. Before you install SmartSystems Reporting Services, make sure you have:

SmartSystems 4.02 or above installed.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 with Advanced Services installed.

a Reporting Services Instance installed.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 installed.

configured the Microsoft Reporting Services instance.

After you have verified that you have all of the necessary components installed and configured for Microsoft Reporting Services, you can install SmartSystems Reporting Services.

To install SmartSystems Reporting Services

1 Download the installation .exe file from the Intermec web site at www.intermec.com\smartsystems.

2 Click the .exe file that you downloaded to start the install.

3 In the drop-down menu, select the Database Server (your instance name) and click Next. The Welcome screen appears.

4 Click Next .The Report Server Address screen appears.

5 Type in your Report Server Web Service URL. If you do not know your Report Server Address:

a Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2008 > Configuration Tools > Reporting Services Configuration Manager. The Reporting Services Configuration Connection

screen appears.

b Select the Report Server Instance that you designated during the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services installation.

d In the Report Server Status screen, verify that your Report Server is running, if not, click Start to enable the Report

Server.

e Click Web Service URL in the left pane. The Report Server

Web Service URL is displayed on the bottom of the screen.

6 Click Next. SmartSystems Reporting Services is installed onto

your desktop PC.

7 Click Finish to close the installation program. 8 Close the SmartSystems console.
