Media Manager at Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, January 2010 –

I currently work as the media manager of IVA (the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences), in which is comprised for instance writing about IVA’s areas of expertise and the findings of our various projects. Such projects typically treat issues pertaining to the border between society and technology, such as energy (incl. energy security and finding sustainable energy sources), transportation (incl. coming up with recommendations to the government for where greater budgetary allotments are needed, which means of transport and which fuel types should be supported, and other things), innovation (lobbying for a Swedish “Innovation Plan”), etc. Furthermore, I write press releases, contact media, come up with media and communication strategies, and more.

I work since the end of 2003 alongside my work as a media manager at IVA also as freelance journalist and report writer/copywriter in my own firm Joakim Rådström Freelance. As a freelance journalist, I have among other tasks written for the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, famous anti-racism magazine Expo, the Swedish Nature Conservation Agency’s magazine Sveriges Natur, eco-magazine Camino, Amnesty Press, LGBT rights webpage QX.se, sexuality and health webzine Ottar Rapport, Göteborgs-Posten, Expressen, Aftonbladet and several others. As a copywriter, I have for instance written the sustainability report for the Swedish Forest Industries’ Association and extensive information material about GPS/positioning firm Topcon. I have also undertaken evaluation and information-collecting tasks for actors such as Forum Syd (the writing of a report on the HR and

Acting Press and Information Manager at Swedish Institute (SI), May 2008 – June 2009

I worked as the acting press and information manager at Swedish Institute, the Swedish government authority in charge of promoting Sweden abroad, while the regular person in charge is on maternal leave. Among my areas of responsibility were for instance the homepage Si.se, writing and sending press statements and other news items, making statements to the media and replying to questions, direct external parties to the person in charge at SI, develop a communications plan as well as a crisis management policy for the entire authority, work with communication for SI’s CSR programmes, etc. Public Relations Consultant for the PR agency Westander, January 2007 – May 2008

Between January 2007 and April 2008 I was working as a PR consultant for the firm Westander, in Stockholm, Sweden, awarded the prize “Sveriges Bästa Byrå” (Sweden’s Best Bureau) in the PR category in the public relations magazine Resumé’s customer survey, in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Among my customers were the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the United Nations Association of Sweden, Swedish Federation for Disabled Persons, and Taxi 020. The work included customer contacts, research, writing of debate articles, reports, press statements, statistical compilations etc. Liaison Officer, The Swallows, India-Bangladesh Section, January 2005 – December 2006

For two years I was working in India as a liaison officer and consultant for the Swedish association The Swallows, India-Bangladesh Section. First and foremost I was reporting back to Sweden, to the association, to media and the public, about successful efforts of The Swallows’ partner organisations in India. I also assisted the Indian organisations in seeking funding, reaching other organisations in India, Sweden and other countries for exchange of ideas etc. The main contact in India in this work was the development organisation Keystone Foundation in Kotagiri, Nilgiris Mountains, Tamil Nadu. They work especially for the benefit of tribal people, and intervene to this end through value addition of tribal merchandise, land development, development of honey-collecting activities and so on.

Trainee at the Swedish Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, 8th of March – 23rd of July 2004

I did my traineeship at the Swedish Embassy in Dakar, as a part of my Masters in Political Science education. I took part in the embassy reports regarding economy, politics, development assistance and culture. Opportunities to independent analyses and recommendations were given. In addition, I replied to queries from the Swedish and Senegalese public via telephone, mail and e-mail and through personal contact. I was responsible for information around Sweden, for the vote reception at the European parliament election, and in general for administrative assistance at the embassy. I worked with the computer programmes Windows Word, Lotus Notes 6 and Internet Explorer.

Researcher at the TV programme "O som i Ortmark" at channel TV8, spring – winter 2003

I did my journalist education traineeship at the TV programme "O som i Ortmark", led by the nationally wide-known journalist Åke Ortmark. After the traineeship I was hired on a 20 percent part-time basis as a researcher. I worked as researcher until December. I worked during my traineeship as well as during my part-time employment mainly with information finding through the Internet and via phone regarding the guests that would visit the programme and the subjects that would be brought up under the show. I was also sent out to perform my own interviews with microphone and camera. After the recording of each programme I was put on writing press releases and debate articles, which were later sent to leading Swedish newspapers. These articles would bring up interesting and important ideas and views that had been brought up under the programmes. The work was at times very stressful, was always very social.

Journalist at Södra Dalarnes Tidningar, Hedemora and Säter, the summers of 2003 and 2004 During the summers of 2003 and 2004 I worked as a journalist at the oldest newspaper in the Swedish region of Dalecarlia, SDT, which forms part of the Dalarnas Tidningar group. I worked as a writing reporter, as proofreader, editor and photographer. I used the cameras Nikon Coolpix and Canon IXUS, and the computer programmes QuarkXpress, Word for Macintosh, Adobe PhotoShop and others. To and from the reporter missions I drove my own car. I often planned the work independently, made the interviews, wrote and took the photos before compiling the article on computer. The job was quite stressful and independent and demanded planning skills as well as social contacts in the quite small towns. In Säter I often worked completely on my own, manning the pressroom by myself and being responsible for a complete daily “Säter” page.

Research Assistant at the Department of Government, Uppsala University, winter 2002/2003

During the winter of 2002/2003 I worked part-time 20 percent as a research assistant within the field of comparative politics at the Department of Government for professor, Axel Hadenius, Assistant Professor Jan Teorell and Ph. D. Fredrik Uggla. My main work tasks consisted in preparing seminars in comparative politics and running computer-based comparisons in the SPSS programme. I also researched for information on democratisation all over the world through the Polity and Freedom House indexes. In the work I had to use a lot of independent thinking and problem-solving skills, and made use of the political science and social capital knowledge I had acquired in my university studies.

Additional experiences

Participant in youth exchange programme Sweden – Thailand, March – August 1998

I spent six months with a Thai counterpart who could not speak Swedish in a youth exchange programme. I worked and lived in a host family first in Sweden, then in Thailand. Arranger: CIU (Center for International Youth Exchange).

Local chairman in the follow-up network organisation NWY (Network World Youth), August 1998 – August 1999

After my youth exchange in Thailand, I was elected chairman for the Uppsala chapter of the follow-up organisation to this project. I was furthermore temporary editor for the organisation journal ”Djungeltrumman” and deputy member of the central board of CIU (Center for International Youth Exchange). Through NWY I also arranged a three day long seminar on questions regarding exchanges, refugees and integration.

Active member of the organisation ICYE (International Christian Youth Exchange) Sweden

I was alongside my engagement in CIU and NWY active in the organisation ICYE Sweden. Through this organisation I went on a seminar trip to Warsaw in autumn 1998 to discuss youth exchange and development issues for Eastern Europe. In autumn 1999 I went to Middle East with the Danish DUF (Dansk Ungdoms Fællesråd) to visit schools in Jordan, organisations for human rights in Lebanon, the refugee camp Dheisheh on the West Bank and to participate in a political debate with the youth wings of the political parties in Israel and Palestine.

Since I had practised theatre for one and a half year at the time, I decided to also lead a group of 10-15-year-olds in acting. We met for one and a half hour each week, had theatre practices and eventually also put up a show that was very popular among the parents of the youth!

I have passed one of the acknowledged Mensa tests under surveillance, and have after good results qualified for membership in the organisation.

Secretary to the board of the Future Earth Foundation, May 2007 – April 2009

I sat for two years as active secretary in the board of the development cooperation NGO Future Earth (Framtidsjorden), with a budget of some SEK 5 millions and with partner projects in India and Latin America. In this role I was among other tasks responsible for recruiting new staff to the office, representing the organisation at a network meeting in Uruguay, negotiating in organisation-internal conflicts as well as acting as a resource person in PR issues to the board and the organisation as a whole (leaning on experiences from my job as a PR consultant).

Interests

I love writing prose and poetry, and enjoy reading a good book and listening to music by many different artists. I also love literature and music of all kinds, and play the piano since I was six years old. I practise swimming, tennis and a few winter sports. I also acted in a theatre group at a student organisation during my years in Uppsala. I like cooking and enjoy a glass of wine. But most of all I enjoy spending time with my children (one son and one daughter), my wife and my friends; they are the most important part of my life.
