Proceeding and material

Prevention and control of Dreissena polymorpha seminar.

Pablo Jaimez is an expert in biological quality of aquatic ecosystems. He knows well the problem that this exotic specie represents for Genil river and its economic activities. He began describing the characteristics of the specie, its vital cycle and its natural dispersal.

He highlighted that this specie represents a serious danger to biodiversity and ecosystems because it can break the balance of an ecosystem. Also economic activities can be affected like irrigation and water infrastructures because this specie has an exponential reproduction coming, in four-five years, to clog and fill channels, pipes, filters and other structures.

Finally, the seminar was aimed to provide measures to agricultures, associations, companies, fishers and authorities in general to prevent the problem, to avoid to infect new water bodies and to try to control the problem. In addiction, some reactive solutions to remove the larvae from deposits and utensils were provided. Leaflets with basic information about the specie, the dangers and measures to the prevention and control were edited and distributed in the seminar and in the pilot river basin.
