2006 Season Pr

e

view

Entering its second season in the Colonial Athletic Association, the 2006 Georgia State women’s soccer program will feature a challenging schedule with ambitious goals.

The Panthers will hit the pitch with 20 matches in 2006, the most combined exhibition and regular-season matches the NCAA will allow a team to compete in. The schedule will feature opposition from seven different conferences – the Atlantic Coast, Atlantic Sun, Atlantic-10, Conference USA, Ohio Valley , Southern, and Southeastern – plus the Colonial Athletic Association, who is ranked 11th out of 32 conferences in the RPI rankings. The schedule includes games against N.C. State, East Carolina, Charlotte and CAA powers Virginia Commonwealth, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships last November, and CAA Champion Hofstra, who fell in the first round.

Eight of the team’s matches will be against opponents that had 10 or more wins in 2005 and five of which had 12 or more. In addition, the Panthers will hit the field opposite every Division I women’s soccer program in Georgia – Kennesaw State, Mercer, Georgia Southern and Georgia.

“The 2006 schedule is the most difficult we’ve ever had,” said Domenic Martelli, Georgia State’s women’s soccer head coach who enters 2006 with a 58-52-13 record in six seasons at State. “The variety of competition from seven different conferences and playing a variety of teams from all those conferences, each representing different styles of play, allows us to see how we stand against any type of competition. Gaining wins against those teams and conferences can give us an RPI advantage.”

In 2005, the Panthers made strides in their first year in the CAA. The team finished the year 9-11 overall, with a 3-8 mark in the league, and while the numbers may not look exemplary, the team played tough throughout the season and improved considerably at season’s end. The Panthers dropped six decisions by only one goal in 2005 and all three of State’s CAA wins came in their final five conference games.

“Beating Hofstra and losing in double-overtime to Virginia Commonwealth are both indications we can compete with the best in this league,” Martelli said. “There were a few games when we were leading and lost by one goal too many times, but we’re close. We did rise to the occasion against the top teams in the conference.

“In our first few CAA games, we were just getting our feet wet with the type of travel and level of competition associated with this league, but in our final conference games we did very well. Now we have to rise to play against all teams.”

While State fared well down the stretch, Martelli expects more in 2006 and his Panthers have set determined goals, which included being ranked in the top 10 regionally, competing in the CAA championship tournament, sweeping their in-state competition, posting seven shut outs, recording 13 wins and having a 3.0 team GPA.

“This is a talented team that I expect a lot from,” Martelli stated. “Now, we have to go out and get results. All of our goals are attainable.”

Martelli returns eight starters from last year’s club and welcomes an incoming class of seven recruits – including three transfers and four freshmen. The new class will provide depth to an already experienced club.

Of the returnees, senior forward Lauren Chavez will push the attack. Chavez led the team in scoring, finished sixth in the CAA with nine goals and had one game-winning goal in 2005. She also finished sixth in the CAA with a team-high 21 points and led the team with 19 shots on goal. Chavez will be joined in the attack by the dangerous Nathalie Carter, who had two game-winning goals last year. The junior forward ended 2005 third on the team in scoring with five goals and had 16 shots on goal, tied for third most on the team. Sophomore forward Kay Harbrueger, who finished second for the Panthers with five assists, will help Chavez, Carter and the Panthers net goals in 2006. Senior Tenisha

Cohen will also bring her three years of experience to the front line.

Martelli believes his midfield is dangerous offensively, yet adaptable to most any game situation. Senior midfielder Amber Collins-Cephers, who finished second on the team with seven goals and led the Panthers with three game-winning scores, has scored seven or more goals in each of her first three seasons at Georgia State. Sophomore Karli Klein will continue where last season ended, as the team’s defensive-midfield workhorse. Midfielders Paige Beyer, Candace Gonzales and Melissa Fletcher, who played in 19, 20 and 15 games respectively in 2005, should all contribute experienced play in the middle. Georgia State’s defense will be led by junior captain Christa Mann, a versatile athletic

defender. “She is the captain, the anchor and all the positive clichés you could use would easily describe Christa,” Martelli said. “She is one of our most athletic and competitive players. She’s the one who’s going to play 90 minutes for 20 straight games, so I am expecting a lot from her, but she can do it.”

Seniors Tiffany Blackmon and Rebeccah Bernard, appearing in 18 and 20 games respectively, will compete for starting positions and significant playing time on defense and sophomores Kristen McKillop, Kari Quinn and senior Rosie O’Toole will contribute as the team’s top defenders. With the departure of outstanding goalkeeper Alexa Pasquerelli, the Panthers now look to three talents to tend net; incoming transfer Meghan Macdonald and junior Charlotte Vargo will compete for the starting position and both should contribute, as should senior net minder Sharon Jassen, who has been limited by injuries in her first three seasons.

In 2006, the Panthers offense will be led by a strong squad of upperclassmen, and supported by a core of veterans.

The Panthers forward attack is paced by senior Lauren

Chavez, a proficient goal scorer. Chavez led the team in

scoring with nine goals, had one game-winning goal and led the team with 19 shots on goal in 2005. Fellow senior Tenisha

Cohen, who had one goal and four assists last season, will

push the attack with Chavez and is an artist of the cross pass. Sophomore forward Kay Harbrueger, who finished second in

2005 with five assists, uses creativity in the box and will lead Chavez and Cohen towards goal. Junior forward

Nathalie Carter will

provide the Pan-thers another talented scoring option. She scored five goals in 16 shots on goal, the third most in each category for the team, and had two game-winning contributions. Sophomore Halle Bargen will add depth to Georgia State’s attack after injuries forced her to redshirt in 2004 and limited her action in 2005.

Defenders

Defenders

Georgia State’s defense will be led by experience in 2006. A trio of seniors and a junior captain – Tiffany

Blackmon, Rosie O’Toole, Rebeccah Bernard and

captain Christa Mann – hope to lift the Panthers to past form, when Georgia State held a 19-game home winning streak from 2002 though the second game of 2005. Mann, an athletic and versatile defender, has played in every game – 39 – in her first two years as a Panther. She has totaled 10 shots,

two goals, including one game-winner, and one assist. Blackmon, O’Toole and Bernard will each provide experi-ence and leadership in the back field and will compete for starting positions. Blackmon has competed in 49 games over three years and has recorded four shots. O’Toole, an attacking defender, has totaled 19 shots and one assist as a Panther. Bernard is a talented defender who has competed in 48 games in three years.

Sophomores Kristen McKillop, who appeared in every game in 2006, and Kari Quinn will provide depth at the defender position. Quinn, who has as much potential and talent as any Panther, recorded three goals one a game-winner on 17 shots despite being limited by injuries last season. Klein appeared in every game and recorded two assists and five shots.

Freshman Caitlin Smith will assist in solidifying the back line.

Goalkeepers

Goalkeepers

Georgia State will have a new net minder for the first time in four years after the departure of dominant goalkeeper Alexa Pasquarelli. Looking to fill her shoes are senior Sharon

Jassen, junior Charlotte Vargo and junior transfer Meghan M a c d o n a l d .

Vargo and Macdonald will battle for the start-ing position, while Jassen, who has been nagged by various small inju-ries during her ca-reer, is expected to contribute. Coach Martelli’s midfield will be led by one of Georgia State’s

most dynamic players, senior midfielder Amber Collins-Cephers, who has seven career game-winning goals. Collins, who Martelli describes as one of the team’s most skilled players, has scored seven or more goals in each of her first three seasons at State.

Junior Paige Beyer, who saw action in 38 games in her first two seasons, will provide experience and leadership as a midfielder and she has tallied three goals and one assist at Georgia State. Junior Melissa Fletcher and sophomore

Candace Gonzales will provide a high

level of skill and tactical knowledge to make the midfield very adaptable and dangerous. Sophomore Karli Klein saw action in all 20 games last season and tallied two assists.

The 2006 Panthers will feature four new talents in the midfield; Brittany Bobbitt,

Molly Burke, Caroline Harvischak, and Mary Kate Fisher.

Harvischak, a sophomore transfer from Wingate University, is a creative and opportunistic goal scorer who should contribute to the offense immediately after leading Wingate in goals and game-winning goals, with seven and three, respectively.

Burke and Bobbitt are defensive midfielders who are expected

to contribute in many small ways and Fisher will add depth in the center of the field.

Domenic Martelli is in his seventh year as head coach of the women’s soccer

program at Georgia State University and will be looking to make some noise in the

team’s second season in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

Last year, Georgia State entered its first season in the CAA and finished with a 9-11

overall record and a 3-8 conference mark. The Panthers found their spark at the end

of last season earning all three of their conference victories in the final five games. A

19-match home win streak ended earlier in the year, but the team enteres 2006 having

won 23 of the last 28.

Martelli’s fifth season at the helm saw some unexpected turns as his team finished

7-7-5 overall and 4-4-2 in the Atlantic Sun. The Panthers had to forfeit three of their

conference games due to NCAA rules regarding an ineligible player competing with

too many yellow cards. Georgia State, who missed the conference tournament for the

first time since 1995, would have finished with a record of 8-4-7 and 5-1-4 without the

infractions. Under Martelli’s guidance, the Panthers extended their home unbeaten

streak to 18 consecutive contests and defeated NCAA Soccer Cup participant UCF,

1-0. The team also ended in a double overtime 0-0 tie to Campbell, who was the A-Sun

Champion and NCAA Cup participant.

Under Martelli’s guidance, the women’s soccer team had its best season since 1998

as the Panthers finished 2003 with a 16-6 overall record and 7-3 mark in Atlantic Sun

Conference play. The squad tied the school record for most wins during the regular

season and for most regular season shutouts (nine), plus posted its best winning

percentage (.727) since 1997. Georgia State qualified for its eighth consecutive

A-Sun Tournament berth and saw its five-game conference winning streak snapped as

the team was defeated by Florida Atlantic in the semifinals.

The Panthers put together a nine-game winning streak during the middle of the

season and lost just three matches during

their last 15. Martelli’s team earned a NCAA

RPI ranking of 88, marking the highest

ranking of any Georgia State women’s team

since 1994.

The Panthers picked up victories against

teams in five different conferences in 2003,

including Birmingham-Southern and

Winthrop (Big South), College of

Charleston, Georgia Southern and

Western Carolina (Southern), South

Alabama (Sun Belt), Alabama A&M (SWAC)

and Tennessee Tech (Ohio Valley). In

addition, State played three NCAA

Tournament qualifiers in Georgia, High

Point and UCF, dropping one-goal

decisions to all three.

In 2002, the Panthers celebrated their first winning season since

1999 as they compiled a 9-6-5 overall mark and finished 6-3-2 in

league play. The five ties marked the most ever by a Georgia State

team. Coach Martelli’s squad garnered an RPI ranking of 132.

During Martelli’s second season at the helm, the Panthers won seven of their final 10 contests and knocked

off fourth-seeded Jacksonville, 2-1, in the conference tournament as a No. 5 seed. The Panthers fell to eventual

champion UCF in the semifinals. Georgia State finished 9-12-1 overall and 5-4-1 in A-Sun action, plus earned an

RPI ranking of 136.

In his first season as coach of the Panthers during 2000, Martelli guided the team to an 8-10-2 record and a

fourth place regular season finish in the Atlantic Sun. Despite a 1-0 loss to Jacksonville in the A-Sun semifinals,

State drew a 0-0 tie with instate-rival Georgia and closed out the regular season with an 8-2-2 mark.

Prior to his arrival at Georgia State, Martelli was an assistant women’s coach at the United States Military

Academy in West Point, N.Y., from 1993-2000. He helped lead the Black Knights to a Patriot League championship,

four top-10 regional rankings, two ECAC post-season tournament berths and an 88-55-4 record. During his

seven-year tenure, Martelli coached one NSCAA Second Team All-American and seven NSCAA East Regional

All-Americans.

Although State is Martelli’s first stint as a collegiate head coach, he certainly is not new to success as a head

coach. In addition to his time at West Point, he spent four years as the head coach of the Eastern New York

Olympic Development Program where he led both the under-14 and under-16 teams to the Women’s East Regional

semifinals. He spent 1993-96 as the head coach and trainer for the Newburgh Storm club team and led the squad

to the finals of the under-17 Boys New York State Cup in 1995 and won the championship in 1996 before guiding

them to the USYSA Regional semifinals. In 1990 and 1991, Martelli joined his father, Tony, a former assistant

coach on Army’s men’s soccer staff, in coaching the Hudson Valley Boys Scholastic Team in the Empire State

Games. Martelli has also coached several club teams that have competed on the local, state and national levels.

As a senior at The Ohio State University, he

launched his coaching career as the head coach

of the Buckeyes’ women’s soccer club program.

Since moving to Georgia, Coach Martelli is a

member of the Region 3 Olympic Development

Program staff and is a five-year state team head

coach for the Georgia Soccer State Olympic

De-velopment Program. Martelli guided the ‘85 Girls

Georgia ODP team to the Region 3 ODP

cham-pionship, where it qualified for the National USYSA

Championships in the spring of 2003 and finished

third. During the summer of 2005, Coach Martelli

helped lead the women’s Georgia Amateur State

Team at the Region 3 national qualifying

tourna-ment in Huntsville, Ala., to a second place finish.

He was the head coach of the very successful

Atlanta Silverbacks Super Y PDP U-17 Girls team

for two years.

Martelli’s playing career began on those very

same club teams he later coached. He was a

member of the Empire State Games Boys Scholastic Team in 1984 and Open Men’s squad in 1987, earning a

silver medal. His on-field days culminated with a standout career at Ohio State, where he was a four-year team

member.

An experienced clinician, Martelli was an assistant director at the West Point soccer camps and an instructor at

numerous camps across the nation. He holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advance

National Diploma, USSF “C” license and is currently a candidate for a NSCAA Premiere license.

Martelli graduated from Ohio State in 1989 with a degree in business administration and later earned his

master of science degree in elementary education from Mt. Saint Mary’s College in Newburgh, N.Y., in 1993. In

addition to his coaching duties, Martelli spent five years as an instructor in West Point’s Center for Enhanced

Performance. He taught the Student Success Course to the freshmen cadets and worked with groups and

individuals training them in sports psychology skills.

“I come from an excellent academic institution in West Point and doing well in school is of primary importance

to me,” commented Martelli on the education of his student-athletes. “I know Georgia State University commits

itself to the development of its students by offering a quality education and encouraging each student to develop

according to their own interests and abilities. This is what can help move people through their lives and I totally

support this process.” Martelli’s team had 15 players in the fall of 2005 and 14 in the spring of 2006 post a 3.0

GPA or better. Seven players from last year’s team also earned the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award.

Martelli is also excited about the increased dedication and commitment Georgia State has shown towards the

soccer program with the building of a new athletics complex, which will house one grass soccer field, one synthetic

turf and one grass practice field, and new locker rooms for the soccer teams.

2nd Year

Jenn Walters starts her second year with the Georgia

State women’s soccer program. After serving as a G.A. last

year, she becomes the first full-time assistant coach in

school history. Her duties consist of assisting with all

as-pects of the program.

Before arriving at Georgia State, Walters closed out an

outstanding four-year career at Auburn University. The

two-year captain of the Tigers helped guide the team to four

straight SEC West Division titles and four consecutive NCAA

Tournament berths.

Walters is the all-time leader in Auburn history with the

most matches played, most matches started and

consecu-tive matches played with 84. The three-year Top Tiger

Re-cipient was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week and

to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week during her

se-nior season. She also earned Second Team All-SEC honors

and was featured on the 2005 Who’s Who Among Students

in American Universities and Colleges.

The two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll student helped

Auburn to a 15-4-2 overall mark and 9-2-0 SEC record

dur-ing her senior season. The Tigers advanced to the second

round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Cup three times during

her career and claimed the SEC overall title once. Auburn

had a No. 9 ranking in the NSCAA poll during 2004 and

defeated No. 4 Florida, 1-0, marking Auburn’s first win over a

top-5 team in program history.

The Clearwater, Fla., native recently earned her USSF D

License. Walters graduated from Auburn in May 2005 with a

degree in public relations.

Craig Peter begins his first year as a volunteer assistant

coach with Georgia State. Peter is currently coaching the

Atlanta Fire United Club in the girls program, and has been

coaching for 17 years, eight of which have been in the Atlanta

community.

Peter previously coached at McGill-Toolen High School in

Mobile, Ala., winning the 1998 state championship. He

coached the junior varsity and varsity boys soccer teams at

St. Pius X in 2000-01. Peter also holds a USSF National C

Athletic Staf

f

Mary McElroy became Director of Athletics at Georgia State

University in July 2005, as Georgia State joined the Colonial

Athletic Association (CAA) a year earlier than planned.

Univer-sity President Dr. Carl Patton took a calculated risk hiring McElroy

as the first female Athletic Director at Georgia State, making her

the only current female African-American athletics director at a

non-historically black college at the NCAA Division I level.

Dr. Patton’s confidence in McElroy has paid off handsomely

as Georgia State’s teams recorded two CAA championships,

five individual conference year-end awards and over 25

all-con-ference recipients under her guidance. She has been able to

fund for assistant coaches for designated sports and increased

the athletic department staff, as well as develop and implement

a Strategic Plan that established the athletic department’s

vi-sion and defined the pathways to those objectives.

The first year has also seen record development for financial

support with regards to scholarships and increased revenue

streams. Facility upgrades have seen improved locker and

train-ing rooms in the Sports Arena. New partnerships with ISP Sports

(sponsorships) and adidas (apparel) have also been reached.

A three-year plan for the building of the Panthersville Athletic

Complex has begun that will result in new practice fields, a

soc-cer and track and field stadium, new tennis courts, and locker

room facilities for those teams. Upgrades are ongoing for the

softball and baseball facilities already there.

The program is working within the framework of NCAA

guide-lines as student-athletes responded in their first year by posting

the highest combined grade point average ever in school history.

The vision of being “the student-athlete’s first choice” is

be-ginning to be realized as the recognition of the University’s

stat-ure and the CAA level of respect rise.

McElroy graduated from the Naval Academy (’87) where she

spent four years as a student-athlete and then five years as a

Marine Corps supply officer.

Her athletic management career

began in 1992 as she worked her way up to assistant athletic

director at Navy. She was Senior Woman Administrator and

over-saw compliance for 29 sports. She also served a stint as

Direc-tor of Alumni Services at Navy.

Mary McElroy earned a master’s degree in Management from Georgia Tech (‘00) and a certification from the Executive

Management Program from the Sports Management Institute (‘04). From 1999-00 to 2004-05, McElroy was on the athletic

management team at Georgia Tech as their Senior Associate A.D. and Senior Woman Administrator. During that time, her

responsibilities included overseeing five sports, including basketball, and supervising the game day operations for

basket-ball as well as the compliance staff.

Within the NCAA and ACC, McElroy was appointed to the NCAA Management Council in April 2005, and was a member

of the NCAA Volleyball Committee. For the ACC, McElroy served as chairperson of the Softball Committee, was on the

Women’s Basketball Committee, the Head Trainer’s Committee, the Senior Woman Administrator’s Committee, and an Ad

Hoc Committee on student-athlete welfare.

When the NCAA Women’s Final Four was played in Atlanta in 2003, McElroy was the tournament manager. She was

also on the Atlanta Local Organizing Committee for the Men’s Final Four in Atlanta in 2002.

As a student at the Naval Academy, McElroy played varsity basketball in the CAA. She was a captain of the club softball

team and still stays active athletically in local Atlanta softball leagues.

A native of Great Mills, Md., she is married to a fellow Naval Academy graduate, Terry (‘86), and they have two sons,

Darrin and Austin.
