Application for economic support for data collection

If you are enrolled in a master’s programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, you can apply for economic support to complete data collection, field work or to attend a conference. See pages 3 and 4 for more information.

Information about the application

What can you apply for?

You can apply for economic support for data collection, field work or attending a conference, both in Norway and abroad. The support can be used to cover travel expenses, conference fees and other expenses in connection with data collection. The application must be approved and signed by your supervisor.

When can you apply?

You must apply for economic support BEFORE the data collection/travels/conferences takes place, and at least 14 days before departure. If you apply later than this you will not receive a reply to your application before departure.

When will I receive economic support?

The economic support will be disbursed when the travels/data collection are completed. In order for you to receive the funds, you must send in an account of your expenses through receipts. The receipts must be taped to an A4 paper.

Processing the application

The Faculty of Social Sciences processes applications continuously through the year. You will receive a decision or a signed application in the mail. The processing time is approximately two weeks.

Rules for economic support to master’s students for data collection and

conferences

As a master’s student at the Faculty of Social Sciences you can apply for economic support to in part cover expenses in connection with data collection or taking part in conferences. You can apply for support to cover travelling expenses and/or other expenses such as postage, conference fees or IT-services. Your supervisor in the master’s programme must approve the application. All expenses must be documented, and the Faculty of Social Sciences will disburse the economic support after the data collection is completed.

The application and the disbursal of support

The application form for support for data collection in a master’s programme is available on the Faculty’s website and in the information centre at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Confirmation by supervisor

Your supervisor at the master’s programme must provide a written approval of the plan for data collection or attendance at a conference. There is a separate space for the supervisor’s signature in the application.

Sending in documentation and disbursal

You will receive an approval of economic support before the data collection, but the economic support will only be disbursed by the Faculty when the data collection / travels are completed. All expenses must be documented. After the data collection or conference is completed, you must send in the following to the Faculty of Social Sciences.

a) A copy of the letter documenting approved economic support

b) A clear account of your expenses (date, short description of the expense, amount in NOK)

c) Original receipts taped to an A4 paper (corresponding to the expenses in the account) It can take 3-4 weeks from when you hand in the documentation until the sum is transferred to your bank account.

Support for travels

You can apply for economic support for travel- and living expenses in connection with your work on the master’s thesis. You can apply for support for up to:

• two (2) travels for data collection/field work/conference in Norway • one (1) travel for data collection/field work/conference in Norway

If you receive support for travel- or living expenses from other sources, you cannot receive economic support from the Faculty of Social Sciences. This applies to amongst others students with stipends from the quota scheme, NORAD or the Erasmus-programme.

Travel support

• Travels for data collection/field work in Norway: Up to NOK 4000,- for one trip, maximum of NOK 5000,- for two trips

• Travels/data collection/field work in Europe (less than 3 months.): Up to NOK 4000,- for one trip

• Travels/data collection/field work in Europe (over 3 months.): Up to NOK. 6000,- for one trip

• Travels/data collection/field work outside of Europe (under 3 months): Up to NOK 7000,- for one trip

• Travels/data collection/field work outside of Europe Up to NOK 8000,- for one trip

Personal Declaration for Travels Abroad

If you are completing data collection / field work abroad you must fill out the personal

declaration for travels abroad form. The purpose of this form is to ensure that the University of Bergen can offer you the best aid possible in an emergency situation. If the information you fill inn changes during your stay abroad, you must inform the department about this (especially changes to phone number and address abroad).

Support for other expenses

In addition to travel support, as a master’s student you can also apply for support to cover conference fees, postage, IT-services, copies and other expenses connected with the master’s thesis. The Faculty can also give production support to complete the production of a film or video. All expenses must be documented.

The maximum support sum is NOK3000,-.

Expenses for insurance, vaccinations and telephone bills are not covered.

Demands for participation at conferences/seminars/congresses

As a master’s student you can apply for support to cover expenses connected to the

participation at conferences, seminars or congresses. In order to receive support, you must present a paper or contribute academically to the conference in another way. You must document the contribution before the Faculty disburses the economic support.
