The trend to provide services that are comprehensive and balanced to meet the changing needs of Australia’s population is paramount, as governments and private owners look to holistic, practical and affordable outcomes.

We understand the changing environment. In the past, hospitals were primarily concerned with providing treatment and care; today there is a global shift, moving beyond the provision of healthcare to ‘health precincts’. We offer a new best practice healthcare model that integrates modern facilities for patients, clinicians and researchers into a world class healthcare centre.

A precinct that creates a supportive collegiate environment, enhancing the hospital campus and promoting collaboration, education and inspiring

innovation is no longer just an idea around the corner. It is here now and we are delivering it today with care and with pride. Our Royal North Shore Hospital Redevelopment Project in Sydney is at the forefront of delivering customised dynamic health precincts, including:

»

State-of-the art hospital facilities for patients and staff

»

Enhanced social amenities including ‘medi-accommodation’ for people and families requiring a city or regional base during treatment

»

A master plan for value-add commercial and retail opportunities

»

A whole-of-life approach, including facilities management.

WE CrEATE ImProVEd HEALTH ouTComES THAT ArE ACCESSIBLE To A grEATEr numBEr of PEoPLE.

Thiess sees every healthcare project, no matter how large or small, as an exciting opportunity to make a difference. We deliver modern, efficient and integrated healthcare facilities that provide a therapeutic and healing environment. We understand the success of every healthcare facility depends on two complementary factors – a primary focus on patient outcomes and the expertise and dedication of staff. Our projects are built around this premise, ensuring that

every aspect is centred on achieving the right environment to enable world leading healthcare.

THESE ouTComES rESuLT In:

»

Shorter hospital stays for patients

»

Efficiency gains for governments and other private healthcare operators

»

Functionally compact facilities that minimise travel distance within the hospital

»

Attractive working environments for staff.

Our design, construction and facilities management principles are based on service-centric models which have at their core the ability to satisfy the needs of patients, families, medical staff, governments and other healthcare providers.

Drawing on the insight of our in-house health facility planner, we approach these projects with a deep understanding of how hospitals and health facilities fundamentally work during operation. We have embraced this specialist sector and built an experienced, professional team with capabilities in designing, constructing and maintaining the highest-quality

complex medical facilities in technologically challenging environments, and within tight time frames and budget restrictions. Our cost-competitive and cutting edge solutions are enhanced through every project as we deliver clinical cost savings and leverage commercial development opportunities. Our master planning also allows for adaptability, flexibility and expansion to reflect the changing models of care over time.

We develop healthcare infrastructure that supports improved patient outcomes and provides clinicians and staff with efficient and inviting workplaces.

The application of evidenced-based design utilises the findings of leading health experts to implement design initiatives directly linked to enhancing patient care and outcomes, and improving the productivity of nursing staff. Thiess approaches all healthcare projects from a patient-focused perspective.

brigHt ideas

We understand having a well-balanced, attractive and coherent visual strategy enhances the wellbeing of patients, staff and users alike. Importantly it avoids confusing patients who are vulnerable to becoming disoriented. The wayfinding system on the Royal North Shore Hospital Redevelopment Project is enlivened by the use of colour while the internal finishes also help people find their way.

The King George Central office tower project in Brisbane includes the Heart Foundation’s Healthy by Design features such as a cycle centre, a healthy choice café and user friendly stairwells running to all floors from the ground level. Thiess has put the health needs of the community at the forefront of the design and construction process.

HealtH infrastructure

Thiess is partnering with Queensland Health to deliver the Townsville Hospital expansion. The redevelopment is part of a major network of hospital infrastructure projects meeting the future health care needs of North Queensland and improving patient outcomes.

Stages 1 and 2 of the redevelopment involved designing and constructing the $94 million, four-storey North Block, relocating the Intensive Care Unit to the new building, and then expanding and refurbishing the neonatal intensive care unit in the existing Acute Care Block.

Undertaking redevelopment works in an operating hospital environment brought its own set of challenges which were overcome with innovative thinking. To reduce vibrations to the adjoining hospital, concrete saws were used instead of jack hammers to maintain 24/7 operations for the emergency department and operating theatres. The project team also used a single tower crane with a 70-metre jib, enabling access to all parts of the building, and eliminating road closures and interruptions associated with mobile cranes on the roads. Now complete, the North Block houses the largest emergency department in Queensland, an expanded medical imaging area and intensive care unit, and a 34-bed maternity ward.

For Westmead, we developed a new form of contract, which remains a unique model for the delivery of health facilities within a fully functioning hospital. The Western Integrated Network Partner concept allowed us to manage the project, develop the design and documentation, and construct the works in various stages.

It was built on the principles of partnership, early warning of issues and the resolution of financial matters ‘by agreement’. The contract also required Thiess to warrant the project cost for each milestone when the developed design was at a stage where it could be effectively priced.

Our collaboration model captures, in detail, the needs of stakeholders and medical practitioners, while building flexibility for the future. This is achieved via our integrated design, construction and facilities management capabilities and partnering approach. We also have significant capabilities in managing the incorporation of environmentally sustainable design (ESD) and life cycle costing initiatives. We ensure that

everyone works together safely to achieve the best-for-project solution. We understand the greatest value can be achieved during the early stages of design, harnessing and maximising:

As one of Australia’s largest construction and services providers, we deliver quality assured healthcare facilities on time and on budget.

On brownfield projects we employ a single step construction process where disruption for patients, medical staff and services is minimised. Over and above noise and vibration controls, air quality and the transmission of dust are key

Many contractors will offer whole-of-life as part of their design considerations but ultimately walk away at the end of construction. We are so confident in the quality of the facilities we deliver that we actively seek opportunities to undertake their long-term operations.

Our integrated approach ensures the Thiess Services’ facilities management team contributes upfront to the design development stage and throughout procurement and delivery, rather than being limited to a post-construction role.

We take a planned approach to supporting clinical services. We have tailored our Maximo asset and works management system to effectively manage the common risks associated with facilities management in health infrastructure. Maximo can be fully integrated with our 24/7 Helpdesk function and the automated building management system. Functional criticality and KPI parameters are allocated to assets and locations in Maximo.

This functionality enables targeted service response, which aligns with the hospital’s operations as well as contractual KPIs. Ultimately, it eliminates unplanned disruptions and reduces operating costs.
