Initial Teacher

Training Programmes

Whatever your ambitions within the teaching profession,

completing your Initial Teacher Training (ITT) at Liverpool John

Moores University (LJMU) will provide you with the skills

and confidence to inspire and motivate learners.

In the 2014 REF, LJMU’s education-related research was ranked 4th in the UK’s Post-92 Universities, with over 60% of work considered world leading or internationally excellent. This research helps ensure our postgraduate courses are at the forefront of development in the field and that students have an opportunity to study alongside leading experts.

Our School of Teacher Education

and Professional Learning has a well

established reputation for delivering initial

teacher training in partnership with primary,

secondary and other education providers

across the North West of England and

beyond. This expertise is reflected in the

outstanding feedback we receive from

students every year, with 92% rating our

teacher training as good or very good.

All of our ITT programmes are specifically

designed to develop teachers who are

reflective practitioners, able to apply a deep

understanding of the curriculum, learners

and learning, to impact on the development

and achievement of young people in our

schools.

About LJMU’s School of Teacher

Education and Professional Learning

The School of Teacher Education and Professional Learning has a well established reputation for delivering innovative approaches to initial teacher education. Our academic team is made up of successful teachers who maintain strong links with schools, local authorities, national CPD networks and professional bodies. This helps to ensure you receive the most up-to-date training and key insights into the field, during your course. Staff offer a wide range of expertise and contribute to the development of national education policy and government initiatives. They are also helping to shape policies relating to curriculum development, school leadership and governance plus initial teacher training. Our international reputation is also growing through a range of successful projects delivered in collaboration with universities and education providers in Sweden, Poland, Greece, and Singapore.

Professional accreditation and

Qualified Teacher Status

All of our ITT programmes are accredited by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and students who successfully complete our PGDE programmes graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

QTS is the essential accreditation for anyone who wants to teach in state-maintained and special schools in England and Wales. It demonstrates that you have acquired the competencies and qualities required to be an effective teacher as determined by the Government’s ‘Teachers’ Standards’ (2011).

Links with Schools

LJMU has longstanding links with local authorities, schools and professional subject associations. Such links enable our students to gain varied professional experience and forge useful contacts within the sector. Our educational partnerships provide vital insights into current practice which, when combined with ongoing research and consultancy undertaken by the School of Teacher Education and Professional Learning, helps to ensure our PGDE programmes and subject-specific curricula are up-to-date and professionally relevant.

Training in partnership

LJMU’s ITT programmes are developed and delivered via strong collaborative partnerships with schools across Merseyside. These links ensure the practical components of your teacher training are closely linked to the University-taught elements of the programme. This provides a firm foundation for reflection on your professional development and strategies for improving your teaching skills.

You will spend around 120 days on placement in schools, being introduced to professional teaching practice by an experienced mentor. All mentors are trained by the University and are committed to providing the highest quality training for new entrants to the profession. Placements will help you develop skills in: planning for learning, organising learners, behaviour management, assessing learning and working with others through a phased training programme.

You will also carry out a number of course-related professional development activities and small scale research projects in schools. These will help give you a deeper understanding of teaching as a profession and applying research skills to improve learning.

PGDE in Primary Education with

QTS

n Full time (1 year)

n £9,000 tuition fee – please see the financial support page for details of self-funding support for PGDE students

n 120 days school-based training and practice undertaken in partner primary schools, Key Stage 1, reception and

nursery classes

These courses are designed to produce reflective, informed and committed professionals who are confident teaching in Primary Schools or other Early Years settings. Training is geared to meeting Teaching Standards and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the development of a high degree of critical understanding of relevant education theory and practice. You will also explore reflective practice linked to your ongoing professional development and gain the practitioner research skills required for effective teaching and learning.

Primary (Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1 (3-7 years))

This course stresses learning and teaching through play and interaction. It provides a challenging and rigorous approach to learning which requires high level planning, organisation, intervention and assessment. To help you gain a greater knowledge and understanding of Early Years teaching and learning, you will complete placements working with different age groups (nursery, reception, and Key Stage 1), in different settings and socio-economic contexts. LJMU’s links with Forest School practitioners will enable you to experience this innovative approach to Early Years practice.

Primary with Mathematics specialism (5-11 years) Primary with Physical Education specialism (5-11 years) Whilst preparing you to teach effectively in primary schools, these courses focus on enhancing your understanding and skills in the learning and teaching of EITHER Mathematics OR Physical Education. They are designed for applicants with a special enthusiasm and interest in either of these subjects, who have a desire to pass this on to young learners.

Postgraduate Diploma

in Education

(PGDE)

LJMU is one of a small number of universities offering a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) instead of the more traditional PGCE. Like a PGCE, the PGDE leads to Qualified Teacher Status, however, the model also incorporates 120 credits at Masters-level as part of the training year, based on assessments closely linked to classroom practice. The PGDE can be completed over the same time frame as a PGCE, for the same cost. As the course has more Masters credits than a PGCE graduates can undertake a full Masters (MA/MSc) degree more easily, while working as a newly qualified teacher (NQT), should they wish to further their professional development.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

PGDE minimum entry requirements are as follows. See our online Factfiles for subject-specific requirements:

www.ljmu.ac.uk/postgraduate

All PGDE applicants should hold, or be expected to achieve:

n An Honours degree (or recognised

equivalent) preferably with at least 50% content in your chosen subject area for secondary subjects

n GCSEs in English Language and Mathematics at Grade C or above (or equivalent). LJMU provides GCSE Equivalence Tests if you do not hold these qualifications. Go to www.ljmu.ac.uk/teaching/ gcse for more details

All offers are conditional on applicants securing satisfactory Enhanced DBS Disclosure and health checks. Practical experience of working in a relevant educational environment will also be required prior to the start of your training. Duration varies depending on the course.

SKE programmes involve the equivalent of eight weeks study of the subject linked to secondary curriculum demands. They are an excellent way to prepare for your initial teacher training. Most SKE programmes start in June, followed by PGDE enrolment in September.

QTS Professional Skills Tests

All ITT trainees are required to pass computer-based QTS Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy before starting their PGDE course.

You will need to register for these online tests and are advised to take them as soon as possible. You are restricted to three attempts for each of these tests, which must be completed before you begin your teacher training. Attempts two and three incur a resit charge and, if you fail either the literacy or numeracy test on three occasions your application can not be considered.

LJMU’s experienced tutors run a range of support sessions for trainees about to sit these tests. For more details, go to:

www.ljmu.ac.uk/EHC/QTS-skills-tests Further information is also available at: www.education.gov.uk/schools/careers

School Direct

School Direct is a route into teaching which is led by schools, working in close collaboration with Initial Teacher Training providers, such as LJMU. This is an alternative route into teaching from traditional mainstream PGCE and PGDE programmes and offers trainees a more school-centred approach. LJMU works closely with many schools across the North West in developing our ITT programmes. We also work with a number of leading schools in Merseyside as part of the School Direct initiative, enabling schools to play an even greater role in designing initial teacher training. For further details go to: www.ljmu.ac.uk/EHC/schooldirect

Further financial support

The cost of ITT in some subject areas may be supported by the National Bursary Scheme

from the National College for Teaching and Learning (NCTL) or, in some cases, by scholarships

awarded by professional subject bodies. To encourage strong graduates to train as Science,

Technology and Mathematics teachers, for example, financial incentives of up to £25,000

are available.

Bursaries vary depending on your teacher training subject and degree class/highest relevant

academic qualification. Larger financial incentives are offered to trainees with 2:1 and first

class degrees.
