discoverHER

T

he idea for discoverHER was sparked in 2013 when founder, Monica Karst dreamed about a com-munity of women where she could make real-life authentic connec-tions and meet

new friends who shared her pas-sion to make a positive change in the community.

discoverHER is the resource hub for all women across Santa Cruz County to discover, inspire and celebrate… together.

discoverHER is designed to make it easy to support and celebrate the women of our community. They share their stories, promote their events and celebrate their wins! It’s having a

team to hold your hand while you cre-ate or grow your business. It’s a place to find resources and support for life and business. Their mission is to create a space for women to be inspired and inspire others.

In a day where social media has engulfed reality, discoverHER is busy creating a platform that goes back to

tribes, women circles, a mod-ern-day girl gang; to be better, stron-ger and have more fun, together.

You are invited to visit their directory of Women-Owned-Businesses, scope out their blog written by women in Santa Cruz County, and join them every Tuesday at 9am on discover-HER Radio, featuring local women who have something to share with the world! Learn more about them at http://www.discoverher.life

T

hings are going to be different

around here this year.

You’re going

to shake things up,

for starters. No more

status quo, no more

complacency. You’re

going to think better,

do better, be better than

ever before and you’re

going to bring your entire

staff along with you. Read

“This is How We Rise” by

Claudia Chan, and you

could find your blueprint for

change.

It’s all bad.

That’s how it may feel, these days.

You’ve been watching the news too

much, you’ve got Holiday Hangover,

shoulda, woulda, coulda. That “deep

unhappiness,” says Chan, may send you

on a search that’s all good. It may show

you a path to leadership.

Sometimes, while moving forward

in life or career, it’s easy to forget that

making a difference starts with an

individual. It might even begin with a

household change that grows to

encom-pass a community and beyond,

multi-plying its effects.

One way to do that is to “lift women.”

Research, says Chan, shows that

there’s a “competitive edge” for

busi-nesses that utilize a female workforce to

its utmost. Doing so will not only help

the indi- vidual, but it will resonate

socially and culturally; it

also helps the men on your

team to make them

part-ners in this endeavor.

If you are a woman

who wants to make a

change but are afraid to

do so, Chan says that

you have a

respon-sibility to stand up

for other women.

You can do that by

cultivating a

take-charge atmosphere

through her “Foundational

Pillars of Personal Leadership.”

First, find your purpose. Know where

your knowledge and assistance are

needed most by looking back at your

life to see how you were changed by

challenge. Find your vision and

main-tain faith in yourself. Learn to overcome

obstacles, have a strategy, be humble

but grateful, and remember to take care

of yourself. Finally, remember that what

you’re about to do will matter – even if

it’s years down the road. The legacy you

leave, says Chan will make an impact.

There was a big, big part of me that

started “This is How We Rise” with the

highest of hopes. Alas, those hopes were

dashed.

Part religion, part new-age, part

so-ciology, part feminism, there’s business

inside this book but it’s overwhelmed

by wordiness. Yes, author Claudia Chan

writes extensively about leadership, but

it’s exhausting to read about it because

of all the other things you must get past

first. You’d absolutely be forgiven if your

thoughts drifted…

Having said that, however, I think

there truly is an audience for this book

– but it’s not necessarily business. “This

is How We Rise” is great for new college

grads whose focus is to gain experience

through social issues and change-based

start-ups – but be warned: the above

caveats still hold. This book is just too

wordy.

So. Wrap it up for a Millennial; this

book belongs in her hands. If you’ve

already been in business for awhile, you

may find “This is How We Rise” to be a

little bit too different.

Why your business needs a physical address

SlingShoT To SucceSS

by Andy Van Valer

W

hen it comes to a physical address for their busi-nesses, home-based small businesses often face a dilemma because they run their business from home, there are both privacy and safety issues for using their home address as their physical business address. A physical location that is zoned for business speaks vol-umes for your company and its operation.

If you run a home-based business or are considering starting one, you’re likely pondering this question yourself. You may even be contemplating not using a physical ad-dress at all, especially if you run a service-oriented business where clients contact you online or over the phone and never have to come to your place of business.

Why Have a Physical Company Address

There are a number of reasons why you may want to have a physical address for your business. If this is the case, there are a number of options which allow you to have a physical address without the added costs of leasing office space.

Trust and credibility. Some clients may steer away from businesses that provide no contact address, or only a P.O. box number—for example, people may worry that businesses without physical addresses might disappear without a trace. Depending on your

type of business, being able to present potential clients with a physical address at which they can contact you may help your business build both trust and credibility.

Professional image. It can be difficult for a home-based business to shake the image some clients may have of the business owner sitting in bed working in his or her pajamas. A physical address provides your business with a more polished, professional image.

Meeting place for clients. While it’s certainly feasible to meet clients at their places of business, or conduct meetings at your local coffee shop, if your business requires a lot of client meetings you may eventually want to have your own place for holding client meetings. Having a place where you can meet clients helps your business build trust and credi-bility, as well as enhance your business’s image.

How to Get a Business Address

Luckily, there are a number of options available if you want a physical address; while there is a cost involved, each of these options is still much less than the cost of renting physical office space.

Some companies offer a turnkey corporate im-age with all the tools you need to run a business and meet the business credit building requirements such as NextSpace here in Santa Cruz.

For a flat monthly fee, you get a business phone number, a corporate business address for your mail and packages.

It is an excellent solution for start-ups and small businesses looking to keep costs low while gaining the resources of a professional corporate image.

If you are searching for a virtual office, consider one that includes the following: dedicated business phone number, corporate mailing address, fax forwarding to email and voice mail forwarding to email.

There are companies that offer this type of service at affordable prices so you can establish a corporate image with all the resources already in place.

If you decide to set up a virtual office, make sure that all of the information you supply is identical to the in-formation you have on your corporate documents. This includes the spelling of your company name, the descrip-tion of your business operadescrip-tion, etc. There should be no differences in your company information across all business documents, registrations and listings.

Give your business the professional image you re-quire to get ahead of the competition while you meet the compliance demands from creditors, suppliers and lenders. n
