With high expectations, first-rate teachers, and

world-class facilities and technology, Davenport

Community Schools ensures that all students have

the tools and character needed to shape the world

in a positive way. Our graduates have been Pulitzer

Prize winning writers, champion athletes, political

figures, and CEOs of multi-national corporations.

A District of Distinction

Our high school students are experiencing unmatched opportunities due to the implementation of three District

of Distinction models: The Accelerated Associates Degree Program at North High School (p. 6), CITI High at West High School (p. 7), and our newest distinction, the

Creative Arts Academy of the Quad Cities.

The Creative Arts Academy is a regionally unique magnet school for the arts, offering a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for exciting career paths in the arts. Dance, theatre, visual art, music, and communication & media arts are taught in downtown arts destinations with noted industry professionals from the area and afar. A World of Opportunities for a

Wide Variety of Student Interests

• A small sampling of student activity and club offerings:

- Mock Trial - Speech and Debate - Quad City Scholars - Anime

- Sign Language - Environmental/Ecology - School Newspaper - Girls Learn International • We offer 24 team sports to our students. A high level of student participation in athletics accounts for over 1800 individual experiences in a team sport each year. • Full-time TAG teachers at every traditional high school foster the abilities of high-achieving students.

• Students can work at our state capitol via Legislative Page opportunities, the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council, and the Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates program. A Davenport Community Schools student represented the state of Iowa at the 2013 National Student Leadership Conference in Washington D.C.

• Our Army and Marines JROTC programs are two of only six in the state of Iowa. Our Army JROTC received the accolade of “Honor Unit with Distinction” - the highest rating possible - for the 5th consecutive year.

• We have the strongest arts program in the Quad Cities. In 2013, our National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards medalist and National High School Honor Choir member were honored at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2014, North High School was invited to present at the International Thespian Festival, and the school will be presenting in 2015 as well. The Central High Blue Devil Marching Band has been selected to represent Iowa in the 2015 National Independence Day Parade in Washington D.C.

A Cosmopolitan Environment with

World-Class Facilities and Technology

America’s graduates are entering a world that is increasingly interconnected, and the Davenport Community Schools experience offers a unique foundation for global understanding.

• There are over twenty languages and over sixty dialects spoken in the homes of our families, and the cosmopolitan environment found in our schools mirrors that of the larger world.

• We offer a stellar World Languages curriculum that features up to 6 years of German and up to 7 years of French and Spanish, as well as Classical Language instruction that introduces Latin and Greek.

• Students take part in a variety of experiential learning excursions. Theatre students recently received a personalized performance workshop with the cast of “Wicked” on Broadway. During a trip to Chicago’s Christkindlmarket, students spoke German with vendors and enjoyed authentic German cuisine.

• Our learning environment also features world-class facilities and technology. Over $25 million in voter approved sales tax and Physical Plant and Equipment Levy proceeds are invested annually in building enhancements, ensuring our schools are safe, accessible, and ideally suited to support student learning in the 21st century.

• Every high school math, science, and social studies classroom in the district has interactive whiteboards. 1600 high school classrooms were recently equipped with new Chromebooks, and 1600 more are scheduled for rollout during the 2014-15 school year.

College and Career Readiness

• We offer 14 advanced placement and 56 dual credit college courses at our high schools, allowing students the ability to earn college credit.

• In 2014, our high school students earned a total of $7,629,173 in scholarships, awards, and grants. Our very own Davenport Schools Foundation awards over $64,000 in scholarships annually. This scholarship network and other college readiness supports such as financial aid workshops ensure that our students are prepared for a journey into higher education.

• We were the first school district in Iowa to offer the nationally recognized ProStart culinary arts program. This curriculum prepares students for a career in culinary arts and restaurant management. A district culinary arts teacher is a recent ProStart Teacher of the Year for the state of Iowa. • Davenport Community Schools has the only Project Lead the Way certified high schools in the Iowa Quad Cities. This engineering program engages students in problem-based learning activities that provide hands-on classroom experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The Combustible Lemons, one of four robotics teams at West High School, were recently recognized as a top 24 team in the world. West’s EndoTherm team is one of only fifteen recipients of the 2014-2015 Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam Grant, with which students will invent a device to prevent heat stroke in children and pets. • Career-technical programs such as our welding program are so advanced that students gain experience by doing real work for local companies. West High’s welding students have won 6 state championships.

Central High School is an outstanding four-year high school with a rich background of traditions and a reputation for academic excellence that stems back to 1907. This heritage is rooted in the classical study of languages, sciences, and the arts, time honored traditions that are now intertwined with the latest technology.

In addition to offering over 200 courses, Central gives students many opportunities for involvement through a variety of clubs, teams, and activities. Whether participating in athletics, joining our award-winning marching band, or getting involved in a student club, there is something for everyone at Central.

Our fine arts programs are among the best in the region. We have a history of excelling at area art, music, and theatre competitions, and the opportunities available to students are unparalleled. Our high school has won more State Championships than any other school in the State of Iowa, including 13 boys outdoor track & field state titles, 11 baseball titles, and 9 basketball titles. Since the inception of our ProStart culinary arts curriculum in 2003, our culinary or management competition teams have won state and went on to compete at the national level 10 times. Central’s culinary arts teacher is a recent ProStart Teacher of the Year for the state of Iowa.

Another hallmark at Central is the Talented And Gifted (TAG) program, with participation in Scholastic/Quiz Bowls, environmental stewardship, and other service activities. TAG student Pablo Haake was one of only twelve students nation-wide selected as a Bezos Scholar. In this program, Pablo met with scholars from the African Leadership Academy as well as other visionaries from around the globe, including Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama.

If you ask students, faculty and parents of Central High, it is the pride of place, spirit of engagement, and culture of support in the school that sets it apart. Central High… we challenge and encourage all students to reach their highest potential!

Mid City High School is a school of choice within the Davenport Community School District. We offer a true alternative learning environment where everyone recognizes that we are all individuals, and as such, learn in different ways. Our “Mavericks” benefit from smaller class sizes, a 21st century learning environment and a more individualized educational approach than traditional high schools.

The culture and climate at our school is one of trust, respect and high academic and behavioral expectations. Students who wish to attend school at Mid City fill out an application and are interviewed by the school Principal and counselors.

Our rigorous academic programming is built on a foundation of relationships and collaboration. Our goal is to provide social, emotional and academic support to our students. We also provide teachers with the resources and professional development to create lessons that are interactive, relevant and engaging. We celebrate the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our students.

To give students control of their own learning, all students meet once a week for 30 minute advisory groups with their teacher-as-advocate. These sessions are often spent focusing on test preparation, keeping updated on credit progress, and engaging in fun team-building exercises. Other features unique to Mid City are our APEX On-Line Learning program, available throughout the day for student credit recovery and/or credit accrual, and a series of “outside the box” courses aligned with Common Core standards. These “Dream Classes” include CSI Forensic Science, Anime Art & Japanese Culture,

Holocaust Literature, and other high-interest offerings. Mid City High School... home of the Mavericks!

Welcome to North High School! North High offers an outstanding academic opportunity because it is the only high school in Scott County (and one of only three in Iowa in 2014-15) where students can earn both a traditional high school diploma and an associate’s degree in liberal arts. This Accelerated Associates Degree Program

is a partnership with Scott Community College, allowing students to take college-level classes beginning in their freshman year and giving students the opportunity to move forward at a quicker pace. There is no cost for students to participate in this program, so families can save money on a college education.

The mission of North High is to embrace and challenge a diverse community of students who will become life-long learners with high expectations in a safe and positive environment. Our innovative, dedicated staff hold high academic standards for our student body. All academic and vocational career courses provide students with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing environment. Our extra- and co-curricular activities allow students the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and socially. Students can participate in a host of experiences, including our award-winning Marine Corps JROTC, visual and performing arts programs, multiple academic clubs, and athletic programs.

Recent facilities improvements at North include a new large-group music room and new tennis courts. Vast improvements to existing spaces have also been made, including upgrades to family and consumer science classrooms, music classrooms, and our library. Our six career academies focus on 21st Century skills and initiatives as students are provided with hands-on and real-world learning experiences designed to prepare them for success in college and career. Students can participate in our nationally and globally recognized engineering and robotics program in the Engineering Academy, our award-winning welding program as part of the Advanced Manufacturing Academy, and our state honored Business Academy, including the opportunity to work in the only student-run credit union in Iowa.
