The aim of the competition “Poland Even More Beautiful − 7 Miracles of EU Funds” is to select and award the best projects related to tourism, sports and recreation infrastructure, as well as public space planning and revitalisation, that have been co- -financed from European Funds. The main prizes are awarded in seven categories. The project entitled “Czech-Polish single-track for cycling at Smrk in the Izerskie Mountains” is the winner in the “Cross-border and international tourism” category. As part of the project, a single-track was created, i.e. a specially prepared trail along narrow paths meandering among the trees of the Izerskie forests. It enables cross-country biking to be practised in the forests with no harm being done to nature.

The local governments of Świeradów-Zdrój and Nové Město pod Smrkem have for a long time been looking for an idea for economic revival of this region. Considering various options, one condition was imposed: the development cannot take place at the cost of natural resources, as the Izerskie Mountains abound in valuable ecosystems, e.g. peatlands. In Świeradów Forest District, one of the major refuges of the black grouse, a species under strict protection, is situated. Relying on the positive experience gained in Wales, single-tracks were selected, i.e. narrow one-way paths which enable bikers to commune with nature without damaging it. A trail was marked with a length of 40.73 km, out of which 23.13 km runs through the Czech Republic and 17.6 km through Poland. The technical documentation was compiled in co-operation with the best-known expert in this area, Dafydd Davis from Wales, who had designed similar trails in Great Britain, Canada and Japan.

the showcase of the izerskie mountains

Świeradów-Zdrój is situated 450-710 m above sea level, at the foot of the Izerskie Mountains in the Kwisa River Valley. The first mention of its therapeutic water comes from a book by a Berlin doctor, Leonard Thurneysser, published in 1572. A real breakthrough in the town’s development was the year 1768 which marked the beginning of organised spa activity. By the so-called upper spring, a residential house for patients with 14 rooms was built (the old spring house). Over time, the town became a well-known spa and its further prime was facilitated by train connections with Wrocław and Zgorzelec. This health resort, with an over 250-year-long medicinal tradition, specialises in treatment of musculoskeletal, rheumatological, neurological and gynaecological disorders, peripheral arterial disease, arterial hypertension and osteoporosis.

The 19th_{-century building replaced the}

previous Spring House dating back to 1781, which was ruined as a result of a fire in 1895. Its interesting body is crowned with a 46 m-high clock tower, which can be ascended. The major attraction of this facility is the 80 m-long larch walking hall, decorated with beautiful floral polychromy and stained-glass windows - it is the longest walking hall in Lower Silesia. At the main entrance, there is a spring of drinking water which contains radon and iron acidic water.

“izery of the three elements”

The peatlands, which are characteristic of the Izerskie Mountains, are rarely seen in their natural state. They are so valuable that it is forbidden to walk on them. However, next to the Świeradów Forest District building, the largest artificial peatland in Europe has been created. It covers almost 4 thousand square metres and one can become acquainted there with typical local plants, e.g. round-leaved sundew, swamp cranberry and dwarf birch. The real attraction is a multimedia system, allowing visitors to identify animal sounds. Astronomy lovers are offered a small observatory. The telescopes located in it make it possible to watch the sky, both during the day and at night.

In 2012, on the initiative of the Świeradów Forest District, an interactive educational nature path was created. It starts at the forest entrance on Polna or Cicha Streets (the green trail should be followed towards the Zajęcznik Mountain). Nine interactive educational boards have been designed to attract tourists’ attention and easily extend their knowledge on the flora and fauna of the Izerskie Mountains. The topics presented include:

• You can see me by day and at night • Find my mum

• Food chain • Forest chimes.

The water mill in Czerniawa-Zdrój (situated at a distance of 5 km from the centre of Świeradów) was built at the end of the 19th _{century. Its original equipment}

has survived and it still functions today. Currently, the mill houses an open-air museum. Visitors can take a look at the old cycle of bread production, starting from wheat processing in mill machines, through dough kneading, and ending with loaf baking in a 100-year-old oven. According to the legend, in order to avoid the spitefulness of a devil hiding somewhere in the mill, prior to crossing the threshold, one has to touch the lion’s head at the entrance to the mill.

A mountain shelter on

the stóg izerski mountain

The mountain hut was built in 1924 in the Silesian-Lusatian style. It is one of the favourite destinations of tourists. From the clearing by the building, one may admire a wonderful view of Świeradów- -Zdrój, the Kwisa River Valley, the Grzbiet Kamienicki range and the western part of the Karkonosze Mountains. The place looks particularly beautiful in early spring. The hut can accommodate around 50 guests, offering them rooms with bathrooms and a restaurant.

It is the most modern cable railway of this type in Poland. The tourists have at their disposal 71 cable cars which reach the top of the Stóg Izerski Mountain in 10 minutes. The gondola cable railway operates all year round. By the top station there is a restaurant with a sunny observation deck.

Świeradów-Zdrój in numbers

This extraordinary place is situated at a distance of around 300 m from the lower gondola cable railway station (towards Czerniawa). A stopped car starts to go up here. Some explain this phenomenon with the fact that the road’s inclination is only an optical illusion. Others consider it a gravity anomaly. Irrespectively of the explanation − everyone has a lot of fun here.

A route for everyone

Single-tracks are narrow (up to 0.8 m wide) bike trails with the maximum inclination of 5%. In places where the crossing is more difficult, small bridges, footbridges and special passageways have been provided. The route is well-marked and always one-way. On marked sections, those riding slower can be overtaken. The single-track is achievable virtually for every amateur of two wheels. Each section, whose difficulty level is marked with a relevant colour, constitutes a loop which can be joined in points marked on the map. The routes run in the Zajęcznik Mountain massif and around the Czerniawska Kopa Mountain. In the event of technical problems with a bike, on the Czech side (near Nové Město pod Smrkem), there is also a bike repair and maintenance station with a shop for cyclists. Tourists can also have a rest here and take advantage of catering facilities.

Świeradów offers excellent conditions for mountain hiking. From the spa, following marked hiking trails, one can reach many interesting destinations in the Izerskie Mountains. The majority of trails start at the corner of Parkowa and Zdrojowa Streets. The following ones are worth paying attention to: • Red trail leading to the Stóg Izerski Mountain − time needed to walk the trail in both directions is around 3.5 hours. On the Stóg Izerski Mountain there is a mountain shelter run by the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (1075 m above sea level).

• Green trail to the Smrk Mountain − time needed to walk the trail in both directions is around 5 hours. At the top of Smrk (1124 m above sea level), a watchtower has been built, from where one can admire a panoramic view of the Czech side of the Izerskie Mountains.

• Green trail to Czerniawa-Zdrój − time needed to walk the trail in both directions is around 3 hours. The walking route runs through the Zajęcznik Mountain (595 m above sea level). In Czerniawa, it is worth paying attention to the Lusatian architecture of huts dating back to the 19th _{century and}

visiting the Spring House dating back to 1910.

• Blue trail to the Sępia Góra Mountain − time needed to walk the trail in both directions is around 2 hours. The trail runs in the Kwisa River Valley; this river has its source at the height of 940 m, on the north-western slope of the Izerskie Garby Mountain and falls into the Bóbr River near Żagań. From the top of the Sępia Góra Mountain, one can admire a magnificent view of the Izerskie Plateau.

• Blue trail to the Izerska Pasture − time needed to walk the trail in both directions is around 4.5 hours. One can find there a floristic reserve “Izerskie Peatland” with relic specimen of dwarf birch, alpine juniper and blackberry. In winter, it is a perfect place for cross-country skiing. On the northern edge of the pasture, there is a mountain shelter “Mountaineers’ Hut”

• “In the footsteps of the Izerskie Mountains’ secrets” trail − the latest tourist route which comprises 14 marked stone boulders, situated by the major tour-ist attractions. Each of the stones has a hologram which needs to be copied. Having completed the trail, visitors are awarded with entries in the “Book of the Izerskie Mountains Explorers” and the “Explorer’s Certificate”.
