Patrick Henry and More
S
cotchtown is one of the jewels of Hanover County. It represents a striking reminder of a critical time in our nation’s history, when the county’s most-famous native son, Patrick Henry, helped spark the colonies in revolution.Henry (and his family) owned Scotchtown between 1771 and 1778 and lived there for most of that time period. The structure was his first grand plantation house, marking his rise to the ranks of the landed gentry. Henry would begin to grow tobacco soon after purchasing the property. “He’s really made it when he moves there,” said Jennifer Hurst-Wender, director of museum operations and education for Preservation Virginia, which owns and operates Scotchtown.
Perhaps the most noteworthy period of his life came during those years at Scotchtown. Hurst-Wender said it was a time marked by Henry’s rise to power, his fight for freedom and liberty for the colonies, and personal tragedy.
“It was an extraordinarily important time both in the nation and for this figure,” Hurst-Wender said.
While a resident at Scotchtown, Henry served in the House of Burgesses, delivered
his touchstone “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech at St. John’s Church in Exhibit space at Scotchtown explores themes and stories of human liberty around the world.

Richmond and became the first elected governor of Virginia. Henry’s wife, Sarah, took a sad turn into mental illness after the birth of a child during the Scotchtown era. She remained confined in the house, ultimately dying in 1775 only a few weeks before Henry mounted his horse at Scotchtown and rode into Richmond to deliver the famous St. John’s address. After he was elected governor of Virginia in 1776, Henry lived part of his term at Scotchtown while battling a bout with malaria. However, he would leave Scotchtown in 1777 after marrying his second wife, Dorothea Dandridge, and relocating to the Governor’s Palace in Williamsburg.
Hurst-Wender said it is important to note that while Henry was striving for freedom for the colonies he also
owned slaves who lived and worked on the Scotchtown prop-erty. That dichotomy is among the topics Preservation Virgin-ia now explores at Scotchtown, which features exhibits and guided tours for visi-tors. The house has been restored to match the appear-ance of the house in Henry’s day.
Hurst-Wender said part of the exhibition space at Scotchtown, which lies about 11 miles northwest of Ashland near Route 54, focuses on Henry’s life while he was in residence, in-cluding his parade of accomplishments. It also depicts the overall history of Scotchtown, which was built in 1720 by Charles Chiswell. In addition, an exhibit, “The Legacy of Patrick Henry, Human Rights, and Liberty,” takes a broader, more sweeping view of Henry’s influ-ence while also exploring questions, topics and important milestones in human rights and liberty around the world, touching not only on slavery and civil rights in the United States but on global events, such as Tiananmen Square and the Arab Spring.
Hurst-Wender said historical interpreters at Scotchtown enjoy the opportunity to explore a wide range of topics related to Henry’s legacy and to provide visitors with a dialogue-based tour to help connect Henry’s short stint in the house with the larger scope of history. aybe you had to forego a summer vacation this year. Why not consider a winterget-away. Despite COVID restrictions, there’s still a lot out there to enjoy.
Smith Mountain Lake, VA
Located just three hours west of Richmond Smith Mountain Lake reminds one of a scene from a postcard with its mirror-like waters reflecting the mighty Appalachian Mountains. Rentals from VRBO.com (which puts you in direct contact with owners) are available year round. During the winter, the lake and its rustic shoreline cabins become a beacon for warm fires and quiet peace amidst clear chilly nights filled with stars.
I could tell you about the local restaurants that are open year round like The Landing (The-LandingSML.com) or Moosie’s (BridgewaterPlaza.com – both of which sit close enough to the serene lake to skip a rock and are worth a stop for a quick bite. But there is something to be said about holing up in your house by the lake. Start your day with a warm cup of cof-fee between the mountains and the lake; settle into that new Paula Hawkins novel during the day. Enjoy the evening with a glass of your favorite wine in front of a warm fire. Just a long weekend around Smith Mountain Lake can give a much-needed charge, unique to the mountain wilderness.

offer-ing a limited menu, or takeout service only. Most fall and winter special events have been cancelled this year. Please check with local businesses individually before making specific plans. A two-hour flight is all that stands between us and the warm weather of the most magical place on earth. You will find that Disney World houses several bars and restaurants through the parks and its expansive shopping district, Disney Springs. In fact, if you chose to skip the park altogether, you’d still have plenty to do.
Fine dining establishments located in the resorts, such as California Grill and Victoria & Albert’s, offer food to challenge even the finest world-class establishments. After dinner, visit the Disney Boardwalk – a 1930s-inspired Atlantic Boardwalk – and show off your moves at the Atlantic Dance Hall. Afterwards, stop next door at Jellyrolls, a bar that features dueling pianos, and enjoy a nightcap.
If you just so happen to be a theme-park- lover, as well as an adult-beverage- enthusiast, I recommend the World Pavilion at Epcot. There you can find 11 pavilions representing coun-tries around the world, with various food and beverage offerings from each.

Wintergreen Resort
For over 30 years, a host of Richmonders have been enjoying their winter fun on the slopes of the 11,000-acre Wintergreen Resort (WintergreenResort.com). Wintergreen is home to one of the world’s most sophisticated snowmaking systems, which gives Wintergreen the abil-ity to consistently offer some of the Mid-Atlantic’s best skiing and snowboarding surfaces. Wintergreen is the only ski area on the East Coast to have 100 percent of its terrain covered by automated snowmaking.
The resort offers about 25 slopes from beginner’s level to one slope for experts only. For other outdoor winter activities, Wintergreen also offers ice skating. My favorite outdoor winter sport is tubing at the Plunge.
What’s the Plunge? Here’s how Wintergreen Resort’s website describes it: Imagine being on top of a ten story building and looking out over a hill that’s longer than three football fields. Now imagine going downhill on a tube at speeds reaching 30 mph. That’s The Plunge!
For families with children too small to take the Plunge, there’s Ridgely’s Fun park, which is designed for kids three and up. The park offers a mini-tubing carousel, bear paw snow shoes, tunnels, plus a gentle hill for tubing.
Check the resort’s website for info on their spa packages as well as lodging and dining op-tions.

GRANDMA’S DRESSING RECIPE

T
his month I wanted to share my Grandma’s Dressing recipe. This recipe is veryspe-cial to our family. I have pictures of myself as a child and my daughter cooking this with my Dad as he shares with us his memories of cooking with his mother. I grew up calling it stuffing, but because it’s not cooked inside turkey it’s technically dressing. The best thing about making this is, not only is it simple to make when you use store bought stuffing cubes, it tastes even better the next day
af-ter all the flavors come together. Everyone looks forward to the leftovers as will you!
INGREDIENTS
15 oz. bag of stuffing cubes 6 eggs
1 1/2 sticks of butter 1/2 t. of salt and pepper 2 T. of poultry seasoning 1/2 t. of sage
1 medium onion 1/2 c. of fresh parsley 2 stalks of celery
8 oz. of whole mushrooms 2 c. of chicken broth
PREPARATION
Preheat the oven 350 degrees
Finely chop onion, parsley, celery and the stems of the mushrooms and add to a large bowl. Next slice the mushroom caps and add along with bread crumbs into the
bowl and mix all together. In a separate bowl whisk the eggs and all seasonings. Pour over the top. Next pour 6 tablespoons of melted butter over the mixture. Finally use broth to moisten to desired consistency. Spoon mixture in 9” x 13” pan and dot the top with remaining butter. Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes. After 45 minutes remove foil and continue baking for 15 more minutes to brown the top. Let dressing rest at least 30 minutes and serve!
