This document is intended to be a resource document only. There are multiple factors a locality, hospital,

or EMS agency should consider when determining which Medevac agency best serve their needs. There may not

be any one single agency that can serve all the Medevac needs of an area, so understanding what resources are

available and pre-planning are essential components to the decision making process. Since helicopter transport

is primarily considered for time savings and advanced care, some questions planners can ask of Medevac

agencies may include, but are not limited to:



Location of base



Physical location of crew in relation to the base



Is the base staffed 24/7?



What is the crew staffing; Nurse/Medic,

Nurse / Nurse, Medic/Medic, are specialty teams

available?



What does the agency do if the primary Medevac

service is not available?



Are there restrictions to taking off ( i.e. busy

airport traffic)?



What is the agency’s average launch time?



What are the agency’s policies with “hot

loading”? This could affect overall timing.



Law Enforcement Medevac agencies

may be able to enter “active crime

scenes” or other scene’s that commercial

Medevac agencies cannot.



Does the patient truly need helicopter

transport?



What hospital will the patient be

transported to? As medically appropriate

patients may want to be transported to a

particular hospital; is this an issue?

Agencies not licensed in Virginia will be

required to transport patients out of state;

will this be a hardship?

Medevac Agencies Serving Virginia

The table below shows the physical locations of Medevac bases that serve Virginia. As stated above,

there are many factors to be considered when preplanning Medevac agency use. This table is designed to help

the EMS system understand which agencies serve Virginia, and where they are located. The “primary region”

column identifies where the Medevac base is physically located. The “secondary region” column identifies the

region next closest to the base, “as the crow flies”. Bases that are located out of state are noted as out of state,

but may actually be closer than other Medevac units within the state. Also only those out of state agencies that

are within 30 miles of Virginia’s borders were included. This was purely to create a manageable document.

Several agencies could easily have three, four, or more regions listed. Some Medevac agencies can travel

125 nautical miles from their base and travel at speeds up to 160 mph. Speed and distance vary depending on

the aircraft used, weight of payload i.e. one or two patients, specialty equipment, fuel on the aircraft at the time

of dispatch, and other variants.
