We wanted the building to remind people of the trees and the forest that were cut down. We chose a solution where 34 colours were separated from the photo, and the photo was pixelated to match the 400 x 1000 mm size used in the facade. Partner Architect Janne Pihlajaniemi, Arkkitehdit M3 Oy

create a connection to it through the pixelation, the color scale and the subtle pattern. With two red shades and different textures, the facade becomes more alive from the shifts of light throughout the year.

We decided to give the large community centre a village-like shape that resembles a flower, where each petal house has a different unit. The building consists of four main elements connected by a shared entrance hall.

The facade consists of fiber cement boards in two green shades that form a braid pattern that turns from light to dark on the long sides of the building to create a varied and vibrant facade which at the same time gives a cohesive impression. The braiding should connect to nature as a theme, something that the preschool itself had as a wish.

The colour creates a whole at a distance and variation up close while connecting the building to the surrounding nature. Buildings have a signal value and it is important for children that a kindergarten building has a clear identity and is allowed to attract attention and add identity to its sorroundings.

The school is built in brick and we wanted to adapt the new facade panels to the current material. That’s why Cembrit’s facade board in the colour Pluto (S 101) worked well and complemented in both colour and shape and corresponded to what we wanted Architect Anders Svensson, Tengbom Arkitekter AB

The dandelions symbolise that this is a place where children can grow and bloom. Dandelions can grow everywhere even in the toughest places and in kinder-gartens they are given all the conditions to be able to start growing. I wanted a colour that would give joy but also work with the rewarding existing materials.

I discovered colours when looking for the right materials for the facade. Even though it is a bit of a cliché, schools and day care centres should be colourful.
