ZDF Marketing - Olympia 2013 “Feuer und Flamme” Commissioned by Animationsfabrik GmbH

RESPONSIBILITY

Art Direction, Design, Animatic

TASK

To create on-air designs visualizing a number of scenarios concerning the Winter Olympic Games for the German television broadcaster ZDF, for later use in the simulation of an animation.

WORK

Firstly, I chose the relevant settings from the given ZDF storyboard which then formed the basis for the style frames generated. During the design stage the top priority was the consistent visualization of the fire, as this was to be the key visual in the on-air design.

The flames had to appear realistic but at the same time non-threatening. To give the picture an extraordinary touch, I added graphical elements such as particles and strokes, which made the fire even more vibrant and vigor-ous within the given ZDF design. The surrounding also had to fit in with the corporate design therefore a light blue and white were primarily used which contrasted well with the fire and flames.

MasterCard International Incorporated -

RESPONSIBILITY

Design Development, Art Direction, Design

TASK

To develop a visual design for an animated promotional film.

WORK

The first step was to set a general style. Using key na-ture, sport and recreational activity scenes, I then implemented the concept. To do this, I primarily used polygon reduction as a creative method and in addition applied a subtle painterly effect. This resulted in the significantly reduced design approach acquiring a na-ive character. This effect was emphasized even further through the use of paint splatters. The particles simul-taneously act as link between the different shots. The colour palette has been limited to shades of yellow, red and gray, in line with the company’s corporate de-sign. In addition to the actual scenes, I also designed outlines for sponsoring and logo shots.

Volkswagen AG Germany - Commissioned by Animationsfabrik Hamburg, Produced by Markenfilm

RESPONSIBILITY

Art Direction, Design, Conception - Motion Graphics

TASK

The development of a new look for the trade fair film for the current Volkswagen model “Up!”. The film was shown in vari-ous formats (16:4 and HD) at the IAA in Frankfurt as well as online and on TV.

WORK

I created style frames to give my client and a team of 3D-artists a better understanding of the projects’ visu-als. Those style frames served as templates for the animators’ work. Additionally, I created various short animatics in order to illustrate the exact type of motion displayed by the individual visual elements (e.g. lines, transitions etc.).

Finally, the integration of accompanying lines added another level to the film. On the one hand they visualize the car’s dynamic quality, and on the other hand they il-lustrate the use of its navigation system and the special protection against stone-chipping.

Concept design development, design and creative direction

TASK

To develop a design for various print products and projections for an event.

WORK

The design structures and patterns which form the basis for this concept were inspired by the stud patterns left on football fields by players’ shoeprints. I then combined the stud patterns with typography, photos of players and their surroundings with other textures. The material of the shoe-upper was also used as a design element, as it also features a homogeneous structure.

The distinctive yellow of the shoe and its various grey tones inspired my design’s reduced colour palette. This selective use of colour gives the concept a very striking and graphic character.

Last but not least I carried out some projection tests to see how the digital designs worked in their intended en-vironment and how they interacted with their subsurface.

Audi AG Germany -

Produced by Neue Digitale/Razorfish

RESPONSIBILITY

Concept development, Direction, Design, Animation, Edit

TASK

To develop an intro to a micro site for the launch of the new Audi A1. The predefined maximum length of the intro was 20 seconds. The concept had to be based solely on previ-ously introduced key visuals and elements from existing micro sites.

WORK

I developed both a 3D and 2D concept. Using the style-frames developed, I then modeled the 3D-scenes in Cin-ema 4D and subsequently began the animation. By con-trasting light and shadow and through the selective use of the A1’s color palette, a visually gripping and high quality environment was created.

The core concept for the animation was based on the reverse domino effect. At the end of the film different versions of the A1’s key visuals illustrate the new Audi’s catch-phrase: “The next big Audi”. After its release the micro site won several design awards and was “Site of the Day” on the FWA website.

Produced by Turner Network Television (TNT) Commissioned by Wiedemann & Berg Television

RESPONSIBILITY

Concept development, Direction, Design

TASK

To develop a suitable title design for the first German TV se-ries on the pay-TV channel TNT (Turner Network Channel).

WORK

The special feature of this concept was its distinctive texture, which made the story very palpable. I used watercolors and handmade paper to create several unique style frames. That way the trailer was analog in appearance, contrasting the digital nature of the series. This makes the trailer very different from the majority of similar TV series, and also gives it a young and casual appearance.

Transitions within the various scenes were deliberately fast, fluid and without abrupt cuts. This approach lends a sense of vitality to the concept and integrates its elements into a coher-ent coher-entity. The green palette is reminisccoher-ent of the main atmos-phere of the series and creates a link between the viewer and the topic of the series right from the beginning.

The ABB Group - Commissioned by Markenfilm Schweiz AG Produced by Interbrand Germany

RESPONSIBILITY

Design & Animation Direction

TASK

Creating and animating an informational film for the ABB Group (on behalf of Interbrand and Markenfilm Schweiz AG). Its aim was to familiarize the company’s employees with the topic of energy efficiency in a both simple but in-teresting manner. The use of the company’s corporate de-sign for the basic graphics was obligatory.

WORK

My task was to visualize the storyline using my own illustra-tions. This included the development of graphical presen-tations of the various scenes and transitions as well as the specific motion patterns of the different elements. I was therefore additionally involved as the design and animation director throughout the complete production process. Furthermore, a voice-over was added in order to facilitate and intensify the conveyance of the film’s message to the employees.

Arla Foods - Commissioned by Markenfilm GmbH and Infected Postproduction GmbH for BBDO Proximity

RESPONSIBILITY

Animation Director, Design development, Design Direction

TASK

To develop a design concept for the launch of a new organic milk, using chalk and chalkboards. The focus being on ex-pressing simplicity and naturalness.

WORK

As I was required to emphasize simplicity, I chose to take a purely analog approach. The first step was to make a chalk-board using MDF and chalkchalk-board paint, which then formed the basis for the rest of the project. I then illustrated some selected elements using chalk and photographed these. Subsequently, I pulled all of these elements together into a digital composition, thereby creating an “Arla-World”. The animation itself was also to symbolize simplicity and was therefore created using a low frame-rate. The move-ment of the cows was firstly rotoscoped and then re-traced, picture by picture. The end result was that we won the pitch and were awarded the contract for 3 TV commercials and an online film.

TASK

The development of an impressive introductory film and a welcome screen for the opening ceremony of the first Volk-swagen production hall in Chattanooga, Tennessee (USA). The usage of “kukas” (robotic arms) as a symbol of mod-ern production plants as well as the usage of the company colors, blue and white were obligatory.

WORK

Instead of simply including the basic shapes of “kukas” in the visuals, I enhanced these elements by using camera lenses, rotors and small roving gripping arms to give them a more futuristic look. The strong focus on depth of field, as well as lighting effects resulted in the templates being ideal for later use by the 3D-artists.

Panasonic Europe Ltd.

Commissioned by Tamschick Media & Space GmbH

RESPONSIBILITY

Visual concept development, art direction and animation

TASK

To develop an animated layout, for Panasonic, for inte-grating typographic and film content for use at the ifa 2014 in Berlin.

WORK

Firstly, I drafted three different design concepts for Pa-nasonic for this year’s trade fair stand. In doing so the sig-nificantly rectangular format of the two projection screens, with an aspect ratio of 21:1, posed a particular challenge. The aim was to integrate Panasonic’s different corporate divisions and range of products into the animated layout using pre-existing film material and key words on the two screens. These screens surrounded the exhibition area at a height of 4m. The key to the final concept was to form one complete area out of interlaced individual zones. Through movement and the rotation of the individual zones, inter-play between reflection, light and shadow was created, out of which new zones continuously emerge.

Thirty-four 4k projectors were used for the 84,2 meter (20800px x 1000px) large, 5:50 minute long projection.

Sony/ATV & EMI Music Publishing Germany Produced by Fragstein Berlin

RESPONSIBILITY

Concept development, Design, Animation

TASK

The development, design and production of an animated Christ mas card, to be sent to employees and clients of Sony/ATV.

WORK

The main idea behind my approach was “stencil cut anima-tion”. Using this method each and every frame of the pre-developed storyboard was cut out of paper and arranged in a staggered but linear manner. For each individual picture, we positioned a total of 15 frames, one after the other, on a tailor-made hanging system. For each shot these were then moved one space backwards. This created the visual effect of a film proceeding into the distance, consisting of hundreds of analog single images.

The content of the film shows snippets of details relating to the main SONY/ATV topic, namely music. Concert audi-ences, guitar players as well as a flying microphone were combined with typical Christmas elements and ornaments.

Produced by Infected Postproduktion GmbH

RESPONSIBILITY

Concept development, Direction, Design

TASK

The development of a graphical concept concerning the top-ic „myths“ for a series of info graphtop-ic films for the German company Hansaplast. The clients required that the concept be developed based on designs used on advertising posters in the 60s.

WORK

Initially, I created some drafts using elements of designs found on historical advertising posters, building a link between old “myths” and “antique design”. But as the results seemed to me to be too bland for the Hansaplast brand, I created the “Hansap-last-World” using CD-colors and retro elements along with dot-ted cut lines, patient information leaflets, typography and other elements relating to Hansaplast products. I compiled all these elements into a collage-like “myth book”, which then served as the surrounding for the later animations.

The transitions from one topic to the other are highly diverse and surprising. Not only 2D but also 3D animations were inte-grated.

Commissioned by Parasol Island GmbH

RESPONSIBILITY

Direction, Art Direction and design

TASK

Director´s interpretation and design development

WORK

Based on the agency’s briefing on the topic “Melitta Cof-fee and Tanzania – Best of Year “, I developed a design and animation concept. The basis for this was a chalkboard, combined with chalk drawings. I then developed this idea further for the moving images. In addition to the chalk il-lustrations, I added further levels to the images, through the addition of real objects, such as postcards, photos and leaves, along with coffee beans which, as part of the anima-tion, moved around to form different objects such as trees or a sun. The different fields don’t just move around in an isolated way, but interact with each other and in doing so create a lively and harmonious “Melitta-World”. Further to the objects already on the chalkboard, additional new and surprising elements are incorporated into the scenes. Animals, people and plants are drawn in sporadically in dif-ferent spots and are then rubbed away again. In this way a lively stage set is created. The animation was principally done digitally in 2D/3D and is in parts complimented with real-life stop-motion recordings.

TASK

The conceptualization and design of style frames for several animated commercials for a German telephone provider (BASE).

WORK

On the basis of a real image-concept I developed an alterna-tive CG-option. Using several relevant scenes I created general properties. I focused on the opening of the BASE-Box and the content that was about to jump and fly out of that box. The con-tent that had to be visualized included topics such as Venice, the moon and the love felt for pets. The topic-related surroundings had to recognizable but in an illustrative manner rather than a realistic manner.

It was important to me to communicate the movement and intensity right from the beginning. I used the BASE CD-colors and added some elements in different shades of grey.

NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto

Commissioned by Ogilvy & Mather Germany

RESPONSIBILITY

Direction and design

TASK

The design and director´s interpretation for an animation concept for NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto and Mini.

WORK

In order to raise awareness of the joint coffee machine pro-ject between NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto and Mini, it was decided that an animated commercial should be produced which visually linked the two brands. The initial idea was based on the Dolce Gusto coffee capsules and these then forming an abstract version of a mini. The capsules come to life and create a vibrant world, step by step, out of an initially plain environment, leaving colourful tyre tracks in their paths. The tracks run in parallel lines, criss-cross each other and rede-sign their space. Whilst doing so the minis interact with each other, as if they are racing each other, crossing each other’s paths and competing for victory.

In order to highlight the young, innovative and dynamic character of the two brands, I decided to use an analogue stop-motion solution rather than a digital animation con-cept. This gives the industrially manufactured capsules a particularly haptic feel and gives them more life in the eyes of the viewer.

Dussmann Service Deutschland GmbH -Produced by Infected Postproduction GmbH

RESPONSIBILITY

Concept development, Art Direction, Design

TASK

The development, design and animation of a host of in-formation films concerning Dussmann GmbH and their di-verse fields of work.

WORK

At the start of the design process the first step was to select a harmonious color palette, which would then form the ba-sis for all objects in later scenes and which would also, from a color perspective, provide some coherence. The concept was to be light and friendly and the CD-colors were not to be used too prominently. I accented just a few specially selected elements using the main Dussmann GmbH colors, red and white. Additionally, I wanted to give the entire film a touch of naivety and simplicity to reduce the perfection and rigid graphical composition. For this reason I used sub-tle textures for all of the elements.

The main topic for this design concept was the company’s environmental protection policies, whereby all of the shop-ping bags at the Dussmann GmbH department store “Kul-turkaufhaus” in Berlin are made from recycled PET bottles.

RESPONSIBILITY

Design, Animation, Tracking

TASK

To design suitable info-graphical elements for both a seven minute documentary about an Audi-A1 race and about a safe driving course hosted by Audi AG at the racing circuit “Circuit Paul Ricard HTTT” in southern France. They were subsequently tracked, animated and integrated into the live action shot.

WORK

For this piece of work the correct perspective of the graphi-cal elements within the takes was paramount. To achieve this I used the software “Boujou” for tracking the dolly shots. That way I could mark all points within the frames with various tags to be used in compositing the typography. Before that all 2D/3D-content (e.g. diagrams and descrip-tions) had been designed in Photoshop according to the cli-ent’s specifications. It was important to not simply convey information but also to create added value through graphic design which was animated using After Effects once the cli-ent had given their approval.

TASK

The presentation of a topic of my own choice for an exhibi-tion in Berlin. The designers and artists invited presented their work to the public as part of a group exhibition.

WORK

This piece of work focused on the constellation of various el-ements on something similar to a theater stage, reminiscent of the kind of formations used by circus artists. I firstly cre-ated all of the elements as two dimensional, black and white objects and subsequently created a third dimension. In each of the three illustrations I integrated one or two elements that visualized speed, thereby confusing the viewer. The end result was 3 scenarios which were very diverse in coloring, arrangement and atmosphere. These scenarios were produced as fine art prints with a width of over 200 cm that were laminated on Aludibond and presented behind Perspex.

Concept development, Design

TASK

The development of an information film documenting the “Audi Mileage Marathon - from A to B” in a visually exciting way so that it could also be submitted for design contests.

WORK

I was primarily asked to develop the film‘s concept and look. The core idea was based on the test drive itself which passed through many European countries. I selected all the participat-ing countries and displayed them in such a manner that they appeared to reach the earth’s core. That way I could ani mate, transform and color each country individually.

Dynamic lines symbolized the route taken by the vehicles which were supported by info-graphical elements. The color compo-sition was based on the contrast between black surroundings, the light texture of the countries and the red of the corporate design.

To emphasize the surroundings I added particles and used se-lective lighting.

TASK

Conceptualizing and implementing a concept for the Volk-swagen Management Conference 2011 in Dresden, Germa-ny, including its visual presentation to the client.

WORK

This project consisted of the core concept, the countdown, background animations for each key note speaker and the pres-entation of the overview. Contrary to the usual 3D productions, the idea was to create a very graphical concept.

The company’s modernity was reflected and represented by arranging all the elements in a visual matrix and through their dynamic motion. Squares and triangles were used to enable the revelation and presen tation of information within seconds. It resembles a sliding puzzle combined with the dynamics of a slot machine. TASK

Projecting, conceptualizing and implementing a complex topic. To a large extent the topic could be chosen autono-mously. This was narrowed down to the visualization of how a district in Berlin came to be named “Köpenick”.

WORK

My research and templates were based on books of old tales and stories about Berlin. To visualize the historic environ-ment I used illustrated pictures from an encyclopedia. The first step was to scan these in and then to cut them out. Next I colored all of elements and combined them to create a fantasy world.

I arranged and animated the material using After Effects. Through the use of interesting transitions and minimal cuts I achieved visual coherence. In this manner I was able to create an entertaining as well as educational info-graphical film.

TASK

Creating a new mood film for T-Systems MMS.

WORK

The basic idea was to present this purely digital and mod-ern company in a comprehensible yet surprising manner. The film was to break away from perfection. It was created to be personal and to touch the viewer on an emotional ba-sis. Therefore I developed a concept consisting exclusively of analog components to be brought to life using stop mo-tion animamo-tion. That way the film would become viral in character and also reach non-customers.

We created a library representing a variety of objects relat-ing to nature, cities and the countryside. These elements were then combined to form a landscape on a stage which was brought to life using puppet-strings. Thus we were able to create a journey through the countryside to village life to city life and finally to the T-Systems-World made of felt.

TASK

The development of a gripping opener for the 27th Interna-tional Short Film Festival Berlin, with the aim of introduc-ing film makers to its various competitions and encourag-ing them to submit their films. An additional goal was to advertise the film festival to the public.

WORK

The concept was based on the historical use of analogue equipment and sets to animate titles. These were rec-reated digitally and with the help of two dimensional graphics they illustrate the different categories of the festival and its competition. By using old illustrated books and visiting a museum of technology I firstly fa-miliarized myself with the topic. I then modeled the cho-sen methods into 3D and subsequently animated them.
