Approaching Final College Decisions

The “OODA Loop” (Observe, Orient, Decide and Act) is a model of decision making which helps improve efficiency under stress. It was developed by Col. John Boyd, USAF, as a decision-making method for fighter pilots to outmaneuver the enemy. It was a strategy “for times of changing intentions that helps to harmonize and focus some aim or purpose in a world of bewildering events and many contending interests.” It is tailor-made for high school seniors for making after-high school decisions, especially those often complex what-college-to-attend decisions. The number one factor for conquering chaos is our ability to observe and stay oriented to what’s going on around us. This is also known as situational awareness (SA).

Situational awareness is the harnessing of all of our senses, including our intuition, to read (observe) and understand (orient) ourselves, to people around us and the situation unfolding in front of us. We cannot predict everything that will happen, but we can learn to read situations better, so that we understand when something unproductive is about to happen. We do this by continuously interacting with our environment and the changes that are taking place and then adapting to them. What this means to high school seniors is to make a conscious effort during the next months to pay attention to the situation unfolding in front of you and those around you may be changing as a result of it. Immediately read all college emails and post-mail, react to it, stay on top of it, take responsibility for it. This effort to observe and orient yourself will harmonize and focus you, both consciously and subconsciously, to make the kind of intuitive and informed decisions upon which you can then act with confidence.

It’s gratifying to be recognized and appreciated.

The decision of “what college is the right one for me” is reached not only by the student and family, but also through the diligent work and wise counsel of guidance counselors. At Coe College, we realize that this decision is a multi-faceted one and we hope this information will be helpful to you as you guide your students through these exciting and stressful times.

An aside: The CI Newsletter expresses its thanks to the Coe College Admissions Department for acknowledging the Guidance Counselor’s part in this very important educational process.

**FYI: I have been accumulating a great deal of information regarding STEM. If you would like this information included in 2015 – 2016 issues of the CI News please e-mail me of your interest.

**NOTICE to CI subscribers -- An assumption is being made that all current subscribers to the College Impressions Newsletter will maintain their subscription through the school year 2015 – 2016. This is being made because the address files are, at this moment, being set up for the 2015 – 2016 school year for Email & U.S. Mailing subscribers. This may seem presumptuous on my part but the organization of the mailing files is an arduous task which will take up most of my summer and it is a task that just doesn’t lend itself to a last minute push. The billing for the year 2015-16 will be mailed during the summer and early fall. The subscription fee will be $85. Should your system prefer to be billed prior to July, 2015 please send me an e-mail message stating that and I’ll bill you before July 1, 2015. This notice will be repeated in the June-Summer issue which should be arriving during the 3rd week of May, 2015.
