Manistee County Council on Aging

Issue: April 2021

By Sarah Howard Executive Director

Hello Manistee County! I hope you have been enjoying all of the sunshine we have been getting. I know it is never easy, but winter should be over and spring, hope- fully, is really here. Life can only get better.

Outside my window at work I have had quite the wildlife visiting. I seem to have a pair of blue jays who spend part of their day at my window and I saw my first beautiful robin a couple of weeks ago. When I am at the office late, there are a lot of deer who seem to graze at the Wagoner Community Center.

I don’t know about you, but I am feeling pretty lucky to have both of my

shots. The Health Department may be doing clinics at the Wagoner Community Center in the future. I think Manistee County has been doing a great job getting people vac- cinated. Between the Munson Manistee Hos- pital, District Health Department #10, Rite Aid and a

few other places, there are a ton of shots getting done. I just want to say thank you to everyone who has been working so hard to keep Manistee County safe.

We are starting to get a few things mov- ing for opening up and getting some activi- ties together to start. We have a few steps before we can open the congregate meal sites, but we are working on that right now.

If you or someone you know are interested in a congregate meal site near you, please give Bonnie a call.

We have so many wonderful projects going on at the Wagoner Community Center.

We had Barry Elder, Bruce Fredericksen, Mick Szymanski, Steve Rogers and Paul Gla- ser, volunteers from Habitat for Humanity in and they have done some great work. They put a beautiful wall up in the Lighthouse Room, which will be for quiet gatherings for small groups or for a time of reflection.

These guys are amazing, if you are out and about stop by and see their beautiful work.

We all are looking forward to some time with our special groups that come in for different activities. I am always surprised

about how much we can do even during a pandemic. We

always wear masks, stay at least 6 feet apart, sanitize

equipment and tables, but we also have a lot of

fun.

April 1st is my sweet son’s 26th birth- day, I know I always mention this, but he is so far away. He lives in Denver and I miss him so much. If you were a mom like me, my kids will always be my babies and there is never anything I wouldn’t do for them. I always felt so bad that his birthday is April Fool’s Day, nobody ever believed it was his birthday.

I forgot to share that I went skydiving the other day. April Fools!!!

I hope you have a blessed Easter and a wonder-

ful April.

April Weather Folklore

• If it thunders on All Fool’s Day, it brings good crops of corn and hay.

• A cold May and a windy April, a full barn.

• The louder the frog, the more the rain.

• If the oak is out before the ash then we are in for a splash,

But if the ash is out before the oak we are in for a soak.

• Rain before seven, fine before eleven.

April cold with dripping rain Willows and lilacs brings again,

The whistle of returning birds,

And trumpet-lowing of the herds.

Manistee County Selected to Participate in Elder Fraud Abuse Prevention Research

Manistee is one of three coun- ties selected to participate in a three- year research project that will develop and test the effectiveness of a financial abuse prevention model for elders with cognitive decline living in rural commu- nities in Michigan. Individuals with cog- nitive impairment, especially the elderly, are prone to be victims of fraud and abuse. Programs and services for abuse prevention in rural communities are scarce and difficult to access.

Dr. Fei Sun, a Professor in the School of Social Work at Michigan State University is working on a funded grant to develop and test a financial abuse of the elderly prevention model, specifically aimed at a population age 55 and over with cognitive decline. This research is being funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).

Locally, Judy Crockett has been selected to be the Community Coor- dinator for this project. Crockett will advocate for the project, coordinate ac- tivities for training and home visits, and will administer screening tests for par- ticipants.

Rose Fosdick, who also serves as the coordinator of the Manistee County Human Services Collaborative Body, has been selected as the FAST Financial Specialist. Fosdick will receive specific training on financial abuse vul- nerability to understand the participants and the challenges they may have with mild cognitive impairment. She will con- duct home visits to determine vulnera- bility and will work to develop individual plans for improving or mitigating any fi- nancial abuse vulnerability.

The Manistee County Council on Aging (MCCOA) is the local spon- soring organization. The MCCOA will assist in the recruitment of participants for this project.

If you are a family member or friend caring for an individual 55 and over with mild cognitive impairment, and

if you are concerned about their financial abuse vulnerability, or want to learn more about financial abuse prevention, you may be interested in participating in this re- search project. For those that qualify, the research will provide you with information at the outset and then a trusted local fi- nancial specialist, (Fosdick), who has been trained, will follow up on a few occasions over the next 12 months. In addition to valuable information, participants will re- ceive a modest cash gift for their participa- tion.

Two on-line training sessions for local family caregiver participants are ten-

tatively scheduled for Saturday, April 10th and 17th. These trainings will take place via ZOOM and each session will last ap- proximately two hours.

Recruitment and training of se- niors 55 and over with mild cognitive de- cline who would like to participate in this research will take place at a later date.

This initial training is for family member or friend care-givers.

To learn more about participating, please contact the project community co- ordinator, Judy Crockett at 231-723-7914 or email: crockettjudy@gmail.com

March Happenings at the Senior Center

It’s been a busy month for the senior center. Habitat volunteers came in and sectioned off an area for a reflection room, our new Lighthouse room. What a great job they did. We also had a

small St. Patrick’s Day celebration. It was nice to see our friends once again.
