When Jesus Meets Our
Brokenness
Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF
Ascension & St. Augustine
www.ccasta.org
September 5, 2021In today’s Gospel, Mark 7: 31-37, Jesus encoun- ters a man who is deaf and has a speech impedi- ment. The physical brokenness of the man led to another kind of pain: an emotional pain. His life- situation was compounded by an emotional bro- kenness that led him to be isolated from family and community. What we see in this Gospel are several things going on.
First, the man seeks out Jesus for help. He wants Jesus to lay his hands upon him. This was not a mere gesture of compassion, but a belief in a transfer of power to make his situation better.
Secondly, we see Jesus responding to the man in a personal way: he takes him away from the crowd into a private moment. Jesus knows exactly what the man needs. Jesus makes his ministry conform to the need of the man.
Thirdly, Jesus addresses specifically the area of the man’s need: the ears that are deaf and the tongue that cannot speak. With a simple com- mand that flowed from a heart of love for this man, the healing took place. Jesus always address- es our area of need. We have a God who speaks specifically into our life because He pays atten- tion to details of our life. He pays attention to the details of your life because He created you to love you.
So, what do we see in this Gospel for today?
God is near to us in His Son, Jesus. He pays
Maybe you remember a past September when our parish joined with Catholic Relief services to host an in-person charity event called Helping Hands. We packed over 10,000 meals in under two hours with Catholic Relief Services, which we then sent to Burkina Faso in West Africa. World-wide food insecurity touch- es 1 in 9 people but in Burkina Faso that num- ber is 1 in 5, and over half a million children under 5 there are severely malnourished.
These events are fast-paced and fun with music and youth runners and a gong that is cont’d
attention to the details of your life because he loves you. He simply waits for you to invite Him in to those areas of brokenness — physical and emotional — so He can do what he does best:
restore you to wholeness.
