Dear Parents, Teachers and Friends,

This Sunday is Father’s Day, when we recognise the profound influence our Dads have in our lives.

Fatherhood is one of the great privileges in a man’s life for it enables him to be the first male in a child’s life; of course this leads to the life-long responsibility of parenthood. Ian Grant in his book, “Fathers who dare WIN”, offers this insight.

“The greatest legacy a man can leave in the world is not so much a great business, but a “living”

investment in the future, through loving, stable, employable and healthy children. Parents are the ultimate

‘people builders’. The fine expectations you have of your children, the skills you teach them, and the values you model for them will be the bricks and mortar of great future citizens.”

Happy Father’s Day.

FATHER’S DAY LITURGY AND STALL

This Thursday and Friday our friends in the P & F are setting up a stall to sell gifts to the students for the Father’s Day. There are some terrific items for sale at very reasonable prices so please support our P & F by a purchase on one of these days.

There will also be a Father’s Day liturgy and breakfast this Friday to celebrate for all those who are father figures in our lives.

ATHLETICS CARNIVALS

In the past couple of weeks we have held our school Faction Athletics Carnival Days, our Junior

Primary Carnival and Kindergarten Sports Day. There was much work and coordination involved by Mr Chinnery, Mrs Jordan, Mrs O’Halloran and Miss Symonds to ensure these events were successful. Thanks to everyone who supported and coordinated our carnival days.

CHANGE OF SCHOOL NAME

As of the beginning of 2022, St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School will be renamed St Mary Star of the Sea College. This better reflects and informs those wishing to enrol their children at St Mary’s that full Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 education is now provided at our school.

BOOKWEEK

Last week was Bookweek and there were various activities and events planned, including our Bookweek parade and Bookfair, kindly organized by Ms McMeekin in the library. Thanks to all involve who helped ensure we had another successful Bookweek this year. Thanks to those parents who supported the students with their costumes on Thursday.

ACC CARNIVAL

This week, a number of our secondary students travelled to Perth to participate in the ACC Interschool Carnival where they will compete with students from other Catholic and Independent schools from across the state. We wish them, their teachers and parent helpers all the very best as they represent the school to the best of their ability.

God Bless.

From the REC desk…

Week 7 has descended upon us and we have so much to look forward to and enjoy.

This Friday, our Year 5 class will be leading us in the Father’s Day Liturgy at the outdoor stage area after a yummy breakfast for all Dads and valued father figures in our families from 7:30am. Liturgy will follow closely at 8:20am.

In Week 9, we have the much-anticipated Performing and Visual Arts Showcase on Tuesday 14th September from 5-7pm at the school hall. Student art works will be displayed and Saint-sations will be performing at 6pm.

In Week 9 also, we will hold our Reconciliation Parent meeting in the school library on Monday 20th September at 6pm. Miss Concannon will be in touch with all parents whose children will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation this year. The Commitment Mass for Reconciliation students will occur on Sunday 19th September at 9:00am later that week.

Before I close for this week, I would like to congratulate and thank all Quobba students, families and staff on attending the Faction Thanksgiving Mass last weekend. I was very impressed with the Quobba banner that was sewn and designed by Mrs Chinnery and Mrs Meynell. A lovely morning tea was held afterwards with lots of ‘red’ foods. I look forward to seeing how we can continue to build upon our faction spirit and service within our community.

Please could you keep all those who are suffering and those who are seeking help and protection in your prayers? Pope Francis has urged all Christians to intensify their prayer, penance and fasting for the situation in Afghanistan, as he entrusted the souls of those who have died to God’s mercy.

Thank you and until next time, please take care.

God bless, Sam Da Luz

Religious Education Coordinator

Last week was the inaugural Book Week at Saint Mary’s. A wonderful book display was held in the library, thanks to Ms McMeekin and her clever displays, as well as the book sale. Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to participate in a poetry competition with the subject being ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds”. Students put in submissions from Years 3 to Secondary.

The winners are shown below:

From the old to the new, The world has problems, it’s true, From global warming, extinction and pollution.

Long ago is when we should’ve snapped out of our delusion.

From slavery, racism and war, the Earth is rotting at its core,

but when there are problems, there’s a glimpse of hope.

From advanced technology to the humble telescope, To women’s rights and no more fights.

The Earth is healing.

Dan Nguyen, Year 6, First Place

Old worlds,

Some happy and some sad, But all tell tales of what we had, Wars, lands and peaceful homes, Our history is full and divine,

But in time, We will see,

How much we don’t know about you and me.

But in New Worlds, What will we see,

Will there always be happy families, Or will there be pain, suffering and rain,

On what was once a sunny day, There is so much more we can do, The world is not just about me and you;

So for greater good, I will say, It wasn’t always a funny day.

There are many other worlds out here, But many can be found there,

There is so much potential for the other worlds, Will there still be trees, bees, and birds?

Will we still here what we once heard?

Heidi Bumbak, Year 7, First Place

Old Worlds, New Worlds, Old Worlds As you see them flying high, In that blue and blinding sky, You see them hover without wings, And the whirring of the motors when it sings.

All the crowds down below Wave and scream, hoping for a ‘hello’, These strange and mysterious ships of the air,

Have nothing here that can compare.

What we see is just the surface of the sea, And the mysteries of old, new and other worlds is

hiding from me.

Strange shadows can catch someone’s eye, They can move and change like the things in the

sky,

Dark and gloomy shadows make people fear, Of all the things they can’t hear,

We admire all the lovely things, And destroy it all without even knowing, Making way for all our hopes and dreams, While really we are just plotting schemes,

Nature is dying, While we are thriving,

Just keep in mind, That all worlds can be kind.

Eva Bonacina, Year 7, Second Place

Yr 3-12 Athletics Carnival

The Carnival was held over two days with lots of great competition. It was wonderful to see so many students getting in and trying their best. The competition was so fierce that there was only 25 points between 1st and 2nd late in the day.

Special congratulations to all students who won an individual award.
