2016 Orientation Leader Application
Thank you for your interest in the 2016 Orientation Leader Program. The Offices of Admission and Student Activities are excited you are considering this excellent leadership opportunity. Orientation Leaders play an integral role in the lives of new students and families at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Your application is due by Friday, March 4th before 4 pm in the Welcome Center, MSUB Room 105. If you have any questions, contact Laura Knippers at (361) 593-4423 or via e-mail at [email protected].Applications will be reviewed the week of March 7-10, 2016. Candidates to the Orientation Leader Program will be notified via e-mail by no later than March 10th if they were selected for an interview. Orientation Leader interviews will be conducted in after Spring Break and the interview process will require the candidate to attend an interview session. Date and time slots will be provided at a later time.
Qualifications
Good academic standing, with minimum GPA of 2.5 (grades will be checked ending Fall 2015)
Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people
Demonstrate desire to learn about the university’s programs, policies, and procedures
Responsibility and willingness to assist others
Must not have pending disciplinary actions in the Dean of Students Office
Must be available to work long hours during the month of June and July when we host the majority of our orientation events.
Applicants must complete an application and participate in the interview process
Must have good communication and time management skills
Must successfully pass a State of Texas criminal background check
Must complete online Youth Protection Training
Must attend all Orientation Day events such as training and debriefing sessions. Retreat & training dates will be announced at a later date.
Responsibilities
Attend and participate in all training sessions during the spring and summer
Assist in the organization and preparation for orientation activities
Serve as a positive representative of the university to new students and their parents
Facilitate new students’ introduction to the university by maintaining an open, helpful attitude and using effective communication techniques
Promote interaction among new students during small group discussions, icebreakers, meals, and evening activities
Facilitate ice breakers and team building activities
Answer students’ and parents’ questions about social and academic aspects of university life
Explain academic advising and course enrollment procedures for all of the university’s undergraduate schools and answer basic questions about course loads and elective classes
Facilitate social activities for new students though direct involvement and participation
Work closely and cooperate with Orientation Leaders and Admission, Student Activities, and Student Success staff to develop, prepare, implement, facilitate and evaluate the orientation programs Characteristics Responsible Positive attitude Self-confident Helpful Flexible Takes initiative Leader Punctual

Orientation Leader Program for having more than three unexcused absences, failing to comply with any of the Orientation Leader requirements and responsibilities as stated in this
application or failing to represent and uphold the reputation of the Orientation Leader
Program. I also understand that I have been accepted to the Orientation Leader Program on a probationary status and may be released from the program if the Orientation Leader
Coordinators feel that I am not a good match for the program.
