What you will study

Since its invention, photography has transformed the way we communicate. Admission information - international applicants to programs requiring portfolios

Admission procedures

Applicants for Bachelor of Film and Screen Media Production, Bachelor of Animation, Bachelor of Games Design and Bachelor of Fine Art are required to complete the following admission and selection procedures:

• Submit an application and supporting documentation

• Submit a portfolio of the required artwork with your application (see details below specific to each program).

Format for all portfolios:

Your portfolio should be submitted in digital form, either on DVD, USB (flash) drive, or as a URL link to an online portfolio. Attachments to emails are also acceptable, preferably with a file size under 10 megabytes.

Bachelor of Film and Screen Media Production

Your portfolio should contain work completed within the last two years, such as:

• Compilation of any films or videos on which you have worked (approximately 10 minutes only);

• Storyboards; • Scripts; • Set designs; • Short stories; • Still photographs.

We will be assessing your creative ability, mastery of technique, use of film language, and ability to present a story or an argument.

Please also provide the following information:

• Describe your role in any creative works (films, videos, music theatre, writing) in which you have recently been involved;

• Describe a film project you would like to undertake whilst studying at QCA (approximately 100 words);

• List any film societies, groups or other organisations you belong to. We will be assessing any practical experience or knowledge you have of the film and television world, and your commitment and interest in its culture. We will look for the clarity and impact of the idea, its suitability to the medium and its originality.

Bachelor of Animation

Your creative work portfolio should contain your best work completed within the last two years. It may contain work such as:

• Excerpts from animated or live-action films, examples of character designs, environment designs, props, sets and other concept work, character models, line test animation, sketches and life drawings, and any other elements that may display your artistic and technical capabilities.

• The moving image component (film/animation/showreel) should be submitted in digital form, either on DVD, USB (flash) drive, or as a URL link to an online portfolio. Attachments to emails are also acceptable, preferably with a file size under 10 megabytes.

• Still artwork (including drawings, pages from your sketchbook, character designs, visual compositions and other graphical designs) should be submitted in a compiled PDF file, or by URL link.

Additionally, you must submit a short proposal of an idea for a short animated film project:

• Write approximately three short paragraphs (500 words) on an idea for an animated film you would like to make;

• The theme of your film should be a portrait or an anecdote about someone you know;

• Describe what your film is about;

• Be clear about how the film begins, how it develops and how it ends; • Your description should be for a short film sequence comprising 10 –12

scenes only.

We will be assessing your visual clarity, originality, sense of movement, acting and expression, mastery of techniques, use of film language, clarity of ideas, and ability to present a story suitable for animation.

Bachelor of Games Design

Applicants are expected to submit a portfolio of their most recent work (within the last 2 years). Because of the multidisciplinary nature of game design, we expect that applicants should present portfolios that represent either: • Artistic accomplishments:

- Compilation of any films on which you have worked (edited, 2 minutes maximum)

- 2D art - character designs, storyboards, paintings, drawings or still photographs

- 3D art - renders of any completed computer graphic projects (with an image of the object’s wireframe), textures, or images

- sculpture or other objects - scripts and short stories. OR

• Programming or scripting samples, preferably small, self-contained games in the form of:

- Working executables or - Flash, Processing or Director files.

In addition, applicants must submit an essay (400 words maximum) explaining either:

• A flow diagram for a segment or level of a popular game. This must explain the game mechanics used; obstacles and placement for enemy and items; and why these were done (and where possible, where the applicant would have improved on this design).

OR

• The underlying mechanics of their favourite board or card game and how they would improve on and/or change this for the better.

Bachelor of Fine Art

Four studio majors are available at South Bank campus: Interdisciplinary Sculpture, Interdisciplinary Painting, Interdisciplinary Print Media, and Jewellery and Small Objects.

Applicants should submit a portfolio of up to 15 images. Please ensure that each image is accompanied by full details of the work - title, date, medium and a brief explanation.

We will be assessing:

• Analytical and/or interpretative drawing skills – your ability to draw from life, and/or your ability to express and interpret subject matter through the drawing medium;

• Experimentation with concepts, subject matter or materials – your willingness to go beyond the standard convention of the medium, to strive for originality and innovation;

• Ability to interpret, express and communicate ideas – the clarity and intent of the ideas, and the aesthetic achievement.

Gain first-hand sustainable design experience and understand its theory and history. In the Graduate Diploma you will learn how to improve your visual, written and oral communication skills so you can communicate clearly to a wide variety of audiences. Masters

Explore how design can make a difference to the climatic, social, environmental and geopolitical challenges facing humanity. Undertake research projects based on current environmental problems and become prepared to deliver practical, sustainable design solutions to these problems.

Exit point

Upon completion of 80 credit points you may be eligible to exit with a Griffith Graduate Diploma in Design Futures. This is an exit point only degree.

• applicants with a related bachelor degree, a Griffith Graduate Certificate in Design Futures or a bachelor with honours in a non-related field, will be eligible for 40 credit points of advanced standing towards the Masters.

This degree is designed for those who want to build a creative career in the film, television and digital screen media industries or further their skills in animation or game design.

Provides a comprehensive foundation for the Masters.

Masters

Undertake short and long (optional) form practical work. Attend film screenings and discussions so you can place your craft in context. In this degree we encourage you to collaborate. Group work allows you to see how your specialist role fits into the production process. Practical work placements give you an opportunity to combine theory and practice.

The following articulation arrangements apply for this program suite: the 40 credit point Graduate Certificate in Screen Production articulates with the 80 credit point Graduate Diploma of Screen Production which articulates with the 120 credit point Master of Screen Production program. The Master of Screen Production enables qualifying students to pursue Higher Degree Research such as the Master of Visual Arts or the Doctor of Visual Arts.

What you will study

Graduate Diploma

This degree provides graduates in the visual arts discipline with the opportunity to undertake advanced study in research methodology through supervised research work. It will prepare you for entry into a higher degree by research program, such as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil). It is also available to students who wish to undertake advanced studies in visual arts, but who may not wish to progress to MPhil or PhD study. You will be supervised by the Program Convenor, who will monitor your progress throughout the program.

Masters

This degree will help you understand the concepts behind your work, clearly identify the challenges you face in the studio and explore innovative solutions to these challenges. With a supervisor you will research an aspect of your studio work and write a thesis. You will develop strong studio practice skills and a firm understanding of the theory behind your practice.

Doctor

The Doctor of Visual Arts is a professional development degree with an integrated program of independent research and coursework. It is designed for visual and creative graduates and arts professionals seeking to extend their established studio research and practice. Develop the expertise to provide leadership in your field, gain research skills, and the ability to articulate a theoretical position within a visual arts discourse.

Entry requirements

Graduate Diploma

• related undergraduate degree from a recognised university (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) with a minimum GPA of 5 (on a 7 point scale) over the last two years of the bachelor degree OR • related masters degree from a recognised

university (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing).

Please note: As a condition of acceptance into the program, students will be required to find a suitable supervisor or supervisors and have their research project approved by the supervisor(s) and the Program Director.

Masters

• portfolio of work and a written research proposal • three year plus honours or four year

undergraduate degree in a relevant visual art or design discipline with a proven research component equal to a minimum of 40 credit points

• practitioners with substantial experience and a corresponding exhibition record will also be considered (your written submission should include discussion of the research nature of the visual work they have produced).

Doctor

• written research proposal (including research question), current folio of work, and a curriculum vitae (CV) AND

• have checked supervision and resources are available

• related bachelors degree with first-class or second-class honours (Division A) or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution; OR • related masters degree from a recognised

institution or equivalent qualification deemed by the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School to be of a standard comparable at least to a bachelors degree with second class honours (Division A); OR

• a record of research or a qualification granted by a professional or other body, deemed by the

Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School to be of a standard comparable at least to a bachelors degree with second-class honours (Division A) • have been enrolled at the University in a masters

degree by research for no less than one year full-time or two years part-time and have work certified by the Dean to be of a standard required for candidature in a professional doctorate.

Graduates find employment

Graduate Diploma

as: a graduate, you will be eligible to apply for admission to MPhil or PhD candidature, subject to fulfilment of the requirements for candidature. The research capabilities developed through the program will prepare you for employment in research fields.

Masters

in: leadership roles in arts communities. Doctor

in: leadership roles in their field or academia.

Pathways to further study

Graduate Diploma

Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts Research Studies (and have achieved a grade point average of 5 or higher with a grade of 5 or higher in the dissertation component) will be eligible for admission into the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program subject to fulfilment of requirements for candidature as specified in the Higher Degree Research Policy and successful completion of the confirmation procedure.

Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts Research Studies (and have achieved a grade point average of 5.5 or higher with a grade of 6 or higher in the dissertation component) will be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program subject to fulfilment of requirements for candidature as specified in the Higher Degree Research Policy and successful completion of the confirmation procedure.
