For over ten years, Women & Leadership Australia (WLA) has been guiding Australian women towards greater career success and life satisfaction through the nationally acclaimed Australian Women & Leadership Forums.
The Australian Schools’ Women’s Leadership Forum has been developed in partnership with the acclaimed National Excellenece in School Leadership Initiative (NESLI) to meet the needs of today’s dynamic female school leaders.
The Women’s program has been shaped by input from a wide range of stakeholders spanning most leading Australian universities and school bodies. This collective expertise imbues The Leadership Forum with a potent mix of understanding, advice and strategy for addressing the unique challenges and complexities that women face in the contemporary school leadership context.
The Leadership Journey
Identifying and operating within your own values-based framework
In this session, participants consider and clarify their own values and identify what they look like with regard to thinking and behaviours. Individuals can assess the degree of alignment between their personal values and their organisations’ and identify options for reconciling differences. This session also allows individuals to determine ways to be an effective ‘role model’ for others. This session also underpins the other 3 modules with regard to communicating effectively, infl uencing and working collaboratively with others as well as building and strengthening personal resilience. The outcome is the development of a personal guiding framework that assists the individual adopt a sustainable, authentic, values-based leadership style.
The Women’s Leadership Forum
The Women’s Leadership Forum is built around four distinct but complimentary themes. The structure of the program optimises the learning outcomes of each module, as well as contributing to the overall fl ow, ensuring a logical progression from one session to the next. Through mastery of each of the elements discussed, participants can take an important step towards understanding and achieving their personal goals.

The program is underpinned by a
blended learning approach to ensure participants have the opportunity to maximise their learning throughout the day and connect powerfully with both their peers and the course facilitator.
The power of the webinar model
Webinar technology has been idenitifi ed as the ideal platform for the Women’s Leadership Journey for a number of reasons. These include:
• Brings together diverse cohorts from a wider geographical area to connect and share experiences. • The sessions are conveniently scheduled immediately
after school hours (4pm-5.30pm). In addition to reducing school disruption, this eliminates the need for casual relief staff.
• Allows women in regional and remote areas to access this invaluable program.
• If a participant misses a session, thay are able to watch a “replay”.
The webinar sessions are delivered from the Australian School of Applied Management’s state-of-the-art eLearning campus. A team of experts are always on hand to answer all of your technology questions.

Understandingg and intteerprretingg diffeereringg styyyyless
Interpreting different communication styles effectively is fundamental to building lasting interpersonal relationships. In the workplace effective communication is the vehicle that achieves results, so getting it wrong is not an option. We all have a basic understanding of how people communicate but this session focuses on the key concepts of personal communication style, how to identify and master your dominant style, how to correctly interpret the style of others and most importantly how to be fl exible enough to communicate optimally with differing styles. Mastering these techniques will rapidly enhance your ability to communicate purposefully in any situation.
Fostering goodwill, commitment and collaboration to aid productivity
Infl uencing others may be as simple as asking a person to do something, or as complex as building strategic coalitions to achieve long term goals. Whatever the desired outcome, your ability to infl uence effectively and ethically depends on the strategies you use, and when and how you implement them. This session looks at infl uencing strategies; in particular, how effective leaders draw on different tactics to best suit the person and situation they are in. A range of different strategies are explored.
Building resilience and overcoming challenges
The fi nal session of the day explores the concept of resilience – particularly during challenging times or in highly pressurised environments. Personal resilience is not only about strength through adversity but the ability to grow and adapt as a result of disruption, to move forward stronger than before. Participants are asked to consider resilience at both a personal and strategic leadership level. Participants go on to learn about ways to build resilience in their teams, and manage challenging situations more effectively.

New and Aspiring Leaders
The Leadership Forum meets key leadership development priorities for new and aspiring leaders. New leaders benefi t enormously from connecting with more senior leaders and gaining valuable exposure to issues they may encounter on their leadership journey.
Experienced Leaders
Experienced leaders are most welcome to attend and benefi t from the chance to revisit their experiences and articulate their strategies. Senior leaders gain valuable insights into contemporary challenges for those women reporting to them. The program provides experienced leaders a forum to refl ect on their career aspirations and derive important feedback for their workplace.
Suzi Finkelstein
Head of School, Women & Leadership Australia
As an internationally recognised expert around women and leadership, Suzi Finkelstein has a deep passion and determination to support the advancement of female leaders across the Australian school sector. Suzi’s career started as a school teacher before moving into leadership development roles across a number of major sectors. Having built a reputation for innovative thinking in the gender diversity arena, Suzi’s opinions and insights are regularly sought by the media outlets throughout Australia.
At the Women’s Leadership Journey, Suzi will guide participants through a potent mix of understanding, advice and strategy for addressing the unique challenges and complexities that women face in the contemporary school leadership context.
Suzi holds qualifi cations in Education and Business and is an
accredited LSI, MLQ and DDI facilitator and coach. She has extensive training in NLP, information processing and delivering facilitation and presentation excellence.

“The Power of Women & Leadership Forums”
Research suggests that to reach one’s potential as a leader, it is vitally important that we feel connected, supported and empowered in all areas of our lives. Whilst workplace training is essential to developing skills, the immense power of women and leadership forums resides in bringing women together to explore their potential as well as their challenges in a supportive and empathetic environment.
Women & Leadership Australia is a national initiative committed to supporting the presence of women in business and community leadership roles. WLA is based on the belief that women represent an enormously under-utilised national resource. Through supporting a greater percentage of talented women to step up into leadership positions, tremendous cultural and economic benefi ts will follow.
The initiative comprises a range of professional development programs, advisory services, networking opportunities, and ongoing research. Since its inaugural forum in 2003, over 35,000 women have participated, making Women & Leadership Australia the largest female focused leadership initiative in Australian History.
Each year thousands of women continue to benefi t from the program ensuring the initiative is widely accepted by business leaders as critical to the ongoing development of Australian leadership.
The WLA program is under the auspices of the Workplace Training Advisory Australia.
