THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF
THE
OLYMPIA CAMERA CLUB
July 2013
President’s Corner by Rosalind Philips
I am excited to be writing my first column as president of the Olympia Camera Club. Tom Blankenship got me involved in the club about 5 years ago and the club has been a wonderful creative outlet for me. Our club is as successful as the membership makes it. I would like to thank all the members who have volunteered their time in club lead-ership positions over the past year. Gene Pardee, president and equipment; Shauna Good, treasurer; Chris Weinreich, secretary; Cornelia Kirkpatrick, newsletter; Tom Blankenship, critique group; Frank Townsend, field trips; Wes Kirkpatrick, community liaison; Allynn Balch, Thurston County Fair; John West, scavenger Hunt; Linda Foss, fall banquet; Nandita Adhia, traveling prints; and Dave Simmerman, webmaster. Thank you also to Al Balch for facilitating the use the Edge Lake Mobile Park Community Hall for critique group and other OCC meetings. All of these people have outdone them-selves in maintaining a vibrant camera club for our community.
I would also like to thank all the members of the club who participated in meetings and field trips last year. We had lots of great events and plan even more for the up-coming year. I hope that you all will be able to find time to attend at least one meeting each month and to participate in some of the field trips.
I have been thinking quite a bit about what my goals are for next year. My major goals are to increase membership participation in our club activities and to increase club membership. We already have great participation, but it can always be better. This year we sent out a survey on our annual scavenger hunt and banquet. The consensus was to change the date to October and to modernize the scavenger hunt rules. We have done both. The new rules were published last month in the newsletter and will be repeated in both the July and August newsletters. We were able to move the banquet date to October 22 and also changed the venue. issue. What ideas do you have to improve traditional club activities? What new activities would you like to do? Please come to the planning picnic and/or participate in the planning survey to express your ideas. Mark your cal-endars for the planning picnic on August 27th at Priest Point Park. We will be meeting in Shelter #1 from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Look for the planning survey in early August. I am excited about the upcoming year in the Olympia Cam-era Club and hope that you will all join me in expanding your photographic universe.

OCC Shoots DAR!
by Frank Townsend
On June 15 1913, one hundred years ago, the Sacajawea Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) dedicated a plaque to one of Washington's End of The Ore-gon Trail. Local dignitaries, including the governor and Ezra Meeker, an Oregon Trail pioneer, were on hand for the speeches and local school children were there to sing patri-otic songs. One hundred years later, June 15, 2013 the chap-ter gathered to rededicate the plaque which still stands in Olympia's Sylvester Park to this day. Again, local school chil-dren were on hand to sing patriotic songs, the Governor could not attend but State Senator Karen Fraser spoke on his behalf, the mayors of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater were also on hand as the original program was reenacted almost identically. Members of the Sacajawea Chapter were dressed in the attire of 1913 as were the speakers and other guests. The Meeker museum loaned the covered wagon old Ezra used in his later travels on the trail to gain Congression-al support of the Washington end to the trail.
The DAR approached the Olympia Camera Club asking us to record the event for them, four members; Wes and Cornelia Kirkpatrick, Terri and Frank Townsend volunteered and pro-vided the group with nearly 300 images.
In thanks to our club's efforts we were listed on the official
program for the event. In
later con- versations
we were told our
im-ages were just what
they had hoped for.
August General Meeting
August 27th, 2013 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. Priest Point Park
Shelter #1
This is our meeting to plan meeting topics, field trip ide-as, and other meeting ideas for the upcoming club year.
Capitol Lake Fair Fireworks July21
by Frank Townsend frank_townsend@comcast.netIn case you didn't get enough fireworks on the 3rd in Lacey or the 4th in Tumwater the Capital Lakefair Lakefairians are giv-ing you another opportunity durgiv-ing the closgiv-ing ceremony of Lakefair on July 21in Olympia.
The Fireworks will begin at approximately 10:15 PM on Sun-day the 21st for about 15 to 20 minutes. I will go early, proba-bly by 8 PM, to try reserving a spot in Marathon Park for us. This is the park on Deschutes Parkway, I've never done the fireworks from there but those who have thought it was great. I have, in the past shot from Heritage Park along 5th Street and got some great images. The Lakefairians claim any spot is good, but wherever you choose to go you should go early or you may not find a spot.
Volunteers Needed
by Frank Townsend frank_townsend@comcast.net
Throughout the history of the Olympia Camera Club we have tried to support our community when called upon. For years now our club has been the sponsor of the open photography competition at the Thurston County Fair. The sup-port is year long, with our appointed superintendent, past president Allynn Balch attending meetings with other organ-izers of the fair, but the bulk of the work happens just prior to the opening of the fair and during the fair itself. Our efforts begin on Saturday July 27 when we take the images in and catalog them, Sunday July 28 when the images are judged and Monday July 29 when they are hung. We have a good number of volunteers on those days, however, if you've not signed up but want to stop by there will be something you can do.
During the Fair itself we supply members who take turns at a 3 hour shift sitting at a station at the exhibit to answer general questions and guarantee the safety of the images in the exhibit. Those shifts, as mentioned are for 3 hours; 10 AM - 1 PM, 1 - 4, 4 - 7 and 7 - 10. We presently have vacancies for Wednesday July 31 from 1 to 4 and 4 to 7. We have a vacancy on Friday August 2 from 4 to 7. We have vacancies on Saturday August 3 from 1 to 4, 4 to 7, and 7 to 10. Final-ly, we have vacancies on Sunday August 4 from 1 to 4 and 4 to 7.
Volunteers for these positions are given free admission to the fair on the day they serve. You can do your three hour shift and spend the rest of the day (before or after your shift) photographing the fair. There are a number of interesting photo opportunities, livestock judging and auctions, riding events, the midway, and the crowds.
