Kia ora te whānau,

It’s hard to believe that we are more than half way through the school year already. The second term often provides students with challenges, as the weather gets colder, the mornings are darker, and the mahi starts to pick up pace rapidly. As such, it’s often the make or break term for many students. It has been encouraging to see so many of our students really push into their learning this term; not even a rain day halfway through the term, dissuaded them from their studies.

The highlight of this term, however, has to be our Musical Production students and their amazing performance of West Side Story. Performing in front of sold out shows each evening, these students really represented our school and values consistently throughout. Both Manawa Ellerbroek and Josh Dalloway produced the high level charismatic

performances that we have come to expect from them, but younger Mounties like Pilot Colvill and Nathan Geerling really excelled with the opportunity they were given. With an experienced supporting cast that included seasoned performers like Ameerah Ragab and Halayna Ladbrook, all of the songs were top notch. A special mention needs to go to Matthew Creba who was outstanding as Tony, and to Emily Duncan whose incredible voice would have made even Natalie Wood proud. The work that Mr Duncan and Miss Smith do in

the Performing Arts continues to be of an unparalleled level in South Canterbury. This year they have taken 70 students on the journey with them and this number continues to grow each year. We are proud of them and what they - and all the students involved - have achieved and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Several students have worked so well over this term that they are within touching distance of their NCEA qualification. This is a fantastic achievement, and should they continue to work at this pace, they will certainly reach their goals next term.

One of our whānau members is leaving early next term - Mrs Rennick has been with us for several years now, but she has decided to make a change in her life for family reasons. Joelene will be leaving at the end of Week 2 next term. She will be missed by our students and staff alike and we wish her all the best for the future.

Finally, on the first Tuesday of week 1 next term we’ll be welcoming “I am Hope” into the school to speak to the Year 9 and 10 students about coping with depression and mental illness. This will happen after the full school assembly on the first day back. “I am Hope” has visited previously and the students spoke about the positive message they spread. We are looking forward to their visit this time.

I hope you all have a well deserved rest and look forward to seeing you all in the third term.

Whanaungatanga means relationships, kinship, a sense of family connection, building trust and long lasting bonds. It is a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging. It develops as a result of kinship rights and obligations, which also serve to strengthen each member of the kin group. It also extends to others to whom one develops a close familial, friendship or reciprocal relationship. Through developing Whanaungatanga, young people are nurtured in the community, so they can contribute strongly in society. It is fundamental to tuakana teina, which is reciprocal or shared learning.

Rangatiratanga means chieftainship, the right to exercise authority, chiefly autonomy & authority, leadership of a social group, sovereignty, self determination and self management. Rangatiratanga is about being determined, open minded, reflective and committed. It can be demonstrated by the tuakana (seniors) leading by example to the teina (juniors), through role modelling the expected behaviours of the kura (school).

In April, we had 3 Mountie students; Emma Baird, Josh Lovely, and Teejay Wilson-Matthews compete at the South Island Athletics Championships. This year it was held at Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub up in Christchurch. Teejay competed in the Junior Boys Long Jump and High jump, Josh running in the Senior Boys 1500m and the 3000m, and Emma threw in the Senior Girls Shot-put and Javelin. All competed against strong regional competition and gave it their all, with Emma coming away with a 3rd place throw in her Shot Put against some very strong competition and Josh running a personal best time in one of his races! Emma will be representing MVHS up in Inglewood, near New Plymouth, to compete at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships with a number of other local athletes in December.

Congratulations to James Corry winning the Aoraki Secondary Schools Cycling Championships Individual Time Trial in 2:58 min, held Tuesday 15th June. James had a mechanical error in the Scratch Race but performed exceptionally well to make up for lost time. James is determined to set things right at the upcoming South Island Champs.

Congratulations Jackson Cournane and his team mates represented South Canterbury in the Under 15’s grade at the 2021 South Island Table Tennis championship in Christchurch. The boys came away with both game and match wins!

It was another weekend of more

Jiu-Jitsu competitions for Emjay Gale, with the NZ Grappler Dunedin Winter Series Regionals held in Mosgiel over the weekend of 19th-20th June.

Emjay took out the top spot in Gi winning Gold and Silver in No-Gi Emjay’s dedication and commitment to the sport shows with amazing results like these.

Emjay is off to Hamilton early next month for a national conference for only female only Jiu-Jitsu athletes from around New Zealand for an extensive training opportunity before her next competition in Blenheim towards the end of July.

Emjay has her team and coaches to thank from Knight MMA & Carlson Gracie South Canterbury for all the training and hard work that has gone into her preparation for competing.

Well done to our 7 students that represented MVHS at the Aoraki Secondary Schools Cross Country - you all did a great job against some top athletes.

Our top placing was from Rowan Waller who finished 5th in the Intermediate Boys. Well done also to Grace, Teejay, Rhythm, Oliver, Jozef, and Annabel!

What a week of football we had! The exchange against Bayfield High School was exciting. Both boys and girls 1st XI teams played really well.

The boys fought hard showing good skill against a bigger team. Several players made their debuts for the 1st XI and it was fantastic to see the contribution they made. The MVHS team scored some top quality goals and congratulations to Samuel and George for finishing off some classy team goals. A well deserved win. Also a welcome to the management group to Mr Capstick - a real addition to the group and the boys are appreciating his input.

The girls team went down early but came back into the game through a goal scored by Emma. Bayfield scored a second goal just before half time. Despite dominating the second half MVHS were not quite able to get an equaliser going down in a close game. Great work by both teams and it is great to see the team progress they are making.

Ella Benson took top honours in the 21km time trial race in her age group with a time of 44min.54 sec. Jemma Jooste represented

South Canterbury in the Under 18 Netball team. They had some strong wins in their recent tournament.

Congratulations

to our Girls team who travelled to Oamaru to take on St Kevins College. In icy cold rain the girls played really well and drew 4-4. It was also fantastic to finish with some shared Birthday cake with Emjay!

Drama

Agribusiness

A bit about them

Well done to our Senior Drama

ensemble on your mahi! Earlier in June our senior drama performed a selection of New Zealand plays that were student directed, produced and performed.

Y13 Agribusiness students bottling their Apple Cider Vinegar made from apples grown in the school orchard.

Our company, La Pomme, has a philosophy that the future of New Zealand’s agricultural success in the future, will become dependent on how sustainable we become in the production of our highly sourced produce and maximising the benefits of our products. In the media, we see our apple cider vinegar sector consistently being torn apart due to the large amount of wastage and pollution that is emitted from one of our largest income earners - the apple cider vinegar sector. The statistics show a disappointing 1.3 million apples are thrown away each year in the world alone. With this in mind, we wanted to make a product that helps combat this urgent issue, thus leading to the formation of

LA POMME’S Apple Cider Vinegar

Queenstown

The Level 3 Geography class visited Queenstown in May for the purpose of studying the impact of Covid-19 on the town. Students worked in groups to carry out their research. While we were in Queenstown we were also able to engage in several activities such as going on the Gondola and Luge, jet boating, and visiting Arrowtown.

A few brave students paid to jump off a rickety bridge over the Kawarau River. Despite the cold, we had an excellent trip. Thanks to all involved.

Pareora River

On Thursday April 8th the students from the River Module, along with Ms Carson-Iles, Mrs Barge, Mr Capstick and Mr Barge went on a field trip to explore the Pareora River.

We started at Lindisfarne and looked at the environment of the river, took water samples, and searched for invertebrates. We then travelled down to Brasells Bridge where we repeated the process to see if there were any differences further downstream. Collecting data was a great way for everyone to learn about water quality issues in our rivers in a real life context.

Once we returned back to class we then used the data we had collected to produce a poster, and to inform our upcoming Inquiry Project into South Canterbury River Issues. A wonderful day was enjoyed by all involved.

Earlier this term we welcomed Robert McCoid, Transport Depot Manager at Fonterra Clandeboye to our kura. Robert spent some time with some of our junior students explaining what employment opportunities Fonterra can offer, what a day in the life of a Tanker Driver looks like, as well as a look at the technology inside the tanker and the importance of milk testing at the farms. There were a lot of great questions from the students.

A huge thank you Robert and his team for their visit!

Over the weekend of the 19th to 20th of June, we (Bring on the Chops) decided to have our 40 hour famine challenge, raising money for World Vision. Instead of giving up food for 40 hours, we decided to play a song on the hour, every hour. This was a massive challenge, mainly due to the extremely little amount of sleep we got. But it was also a great experience, filled with fun moments and heaps of good food. Thanks to the generosity of many people, at the moment we have raised around $2250 and we are still taking donations for this great cause. For more details contact us on our social media platform. https://www.facebook.com/bringonthechops

Ranui Kindergarten/MVHS

Community Project

The Year 13 Building and Engineering students completed a community project with the nearby Ranui Kindergarten. The group of students were tasked with designing and building two large lockable boxes that would house the children’s sand pit toys. They also had to design, create and laser cut four signs that labeled key areas around the Kindergarten in both English and Te reo Māori, such as

‘Bus Stop - tūnga pahi’.

Before getting started on these projects the students met with the tamariki and their teachers back in term one to discuss design requirements and take measurements.

These projects were worked on by Jess Brown, Leah Johnson, Jasprit Singh, Ethan Soden, Masha Chernytska, James Corry, Lachie Gilchrist and Jack McLennan. Installation was completed by Ethan and Masha in week eight of term two. Students who took part in the project have the opportunity to gain Level 3 Building Unit Standard in Communication and Safety.

The tamariki at Ranui Kindergarten are thrilled with their new storage boxes and signs.
