What is LearningPoint?

Introduction LearningPoint is Brown’s new, robust professional development and compliance learning management system (LMS).

Item Description

1 This new system is replacing the current training registration system, training.brown.edu.

2 It is delivered via a software as a service (SaaS) model similar to Gmail and Workday by Cornerstone OnDemand.

3 LearningPoint’s primary focus will be to support professional development and compliance training for Brown’s workforce comprised of staff, faculty and student workers.

4 This new system will provide a single point of access to instructor- led training registration and administration, e-Learning delivery and more.

LearningPoint- A learning management system, or LMS, is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training including classroom, online and other types of learning objects or forms of training.

Course - Descriptions of training programs visible to instructors and only visible to learners once the course is scheduled as an event for which Learners can register.

Event- A course description.

LearningPoint hosts a fully searchable catalog that includes:

Learners are able to view and register for an event.

Sessions- Specified scheduled occurrences of events, i.e. with scheduled dates, times, and locations.

My Registration – A generated record of a learner’s registration actions within the system.

My Professional Development Inbox - Records a learner’s activity and progress within the LMS.

Register - Clickable link that leads the learner to the registration form to submit to complete the

registration process within the system.

Request - Clickable link that registers the learner for a learning object or prompts learner to be put on a waitlist.

Introduction LearningPoint is a multi-functional system that has many exciting features.

In order to become familiar with this new LMS it is important to be aware of some key details.

Term Description

Professional Development

This refers to the development of knowledge, skills and competencies needed for Brown’s workforce to perform effectively in their current or future positions.

Compliance-related Learning Objects

These are defined as learning objects required and in adherence to federal, state, local or university regulations and/or policies.

Important Dates

Effective June 30, 2012, training.brown.edu will be decommissioned.

Other Training In preparation for the decommissioning of training.brown.edu, staff in departments and groups who currently use training.brown.edu for event registration, will be provided with Google Forms training beginning in January of 2012.

Overview In order to better understand the LearningPoint System, it is important to view key screens along with their detailed descriptions.

Screen Description

Single Sign-On Using single sign on technology, utilize Brown’s web authentication tool, Shibboleth, to log in. When prompted, simply enter in your Brown short id and password to access the LMS.

Transcript Provides the title and status of learning objects a learner has taken or is in the process of taking.

Electronic

Acknowledgement

This is an electronic signature attached to a learning object. By completing an electronic acknowledgement or signature, a learner is indicating completion of the required action (e.g. read and understand a new policy).

Learning Object Anything from which we learn including instructor-led training sessions, workbooks, online training, tip sheets and other documents.

Widget The section headers on the homepage of LearningPoint.

Curriculum Multiple learning objects linked together to be completed LMS A learning management system, or LMS, is a software

application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training including classroom, online and other types of learning objects or forms of training.

Dashboard Graphically displayed information from a standard or custom report created in LearningPoint.
