, JUNE 6TH, 2021
PASTORAL MESSAGE
I have a collecƟon of old photographs, probably once loved, but somehow ended up for sale at anƟque stores. Among my favorites are what I call the “Catholic” photos, which depict priests, nuns in full habit, class photos from schools, and young people on the day of their BapƟsm, First Communion, or ConĮrmaƟon. Two of my favorites are First Communion photos. The boy looks almost angelic though if you look closely at the eyes, you can tell he may not be as holy as he appears. He’s wearing a wool suit with knickers and argyle socks. It’s a bit too big but he’ll grow into it and it’s probably a bit itchy. Strategically placed in his hand are a prayer book and a pair of rosary beads. The girl is dressed all in white: white dress, white veil, white gloves, white stockings, white shoes. She too looks like a saint in the making, with rosary beads in one hand while holding a prayer card. The boy looks about ten, the girl a year or two older. The older age would make sense. The photographs date back to the early 1900’s. Prior to 1910, the age for First Communion was anywhere between ten and ĮŌeen years of age, but Pope St. Pius X changed the age to seven, due largely to the
fact older children oŌen leŌ school early to work and never received their First Communion. It was his way of stressing the importance of the Eucharist. You can tell they realize it is a special day, and if you were to ask either, they could probably tell you why. Whether it was at a Catholic school or aŌer the children’s Mass on Sunday morning, children were taught by “Sister,” and if it was the Boston area, she was a most likely a Dominican or Franciscan, a Sister of St. Joseph, Notre Dame, Mercy, PresentaƟon, St. Anne, Blessed Sacrament, or Charity, both Mother Seton’s Sisters & Daughters of Charity and the French-Canadian
Grey Nuns. She taught religion classes using The BalƟmore
Catechism. The lessons were commiƩed to memory and no doubt both could recite the precise answer “The Holy Eucharist is the Sacrament which contains the body and blood, soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ under the appearances of bread and wine.”
Fast forward to today, the boy would probably wear either a white suit or perhaps a blue blazer and khakis with a white shirt and Ɵe, not the knickers and argyle socks. The girl would probably sƟll wear all white, but the veil would be styled diīerently. The photos might be captured with a camera or more likely a cell phone and would be less formal. Children today might not be able to recite an exact deĮniƟon from
The BalƟmore Catechism, but First Communion would be
no less special today than it was at the early 1900’s. The boy and girl in the formal photographs knew something special was going to happen. Children today know something special is happening when they receive their First Communion. My guess is the appreciaƟon for the Eucharist changed for the young boy and girl in the photographs and that sƟll happens too. OŌen our appreciaƟon for the Eucharist grows and changes as we journey through life. I know it has for me. I am certain that when I was in the second grade and received my First Communion, I had no idea that there would be a Ɵme in my life where I would become a priest and
celebrate Mass almost every day. I had no idea of the joy I would see on children’s faces when they received for the Įrst Ɵme or how comforƟng receiving Communion is to someone who is homebound or in a hospital. I have heard stories of people who came to appreciate the Eucharist aŌer being away for many years. I have seen and heard of ways the Eucharist unites people. A hospital chaplain once shared with me a story of an experience she had bringing Communion to a paƟent. The family was gathered but the tension was thick. A man was in a hospital bed with only a few days to live. He had a son who was visiƟng but the two had been estranged for twenty years. The family prayed together, and the man received Communion. It was the beginning of reconciliaƟon. Many people can share stories of going into a church whether just for a visit or EucharisƟc adoraƟon to simply spend Ɵme with the Lord, and there they Įnd the comfort only Jesus can give, or discern major life decisions.
As we celebrate the Feast of Corpus ChrisƟ this weekend, the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, maybe it might be good for us to recall our First Communion, whether it was as a child, or maybe even as an adult, and recall the joy and excitement of the day. We may appreciate the fact we did not completely understand what was happening, but we knew it was important, we knew it was a reason to celebrate, and we knew it was a day that involved Jesus Christ but had no idea of the giŌ we received or how our appreciaƟon of it would grow throughout our lives. Taking some Ɵme to appreciate the Eucharist and its importance in our lives is a great way to mark this day, reminding us that Jesus Christ, through the Eucharist, is with us each and every day of or lives in every step we take.

A Note from Bishop Reed and Fr. Kearney
Cardinal O’Malley sent a letter to the priests of the Archdiocese
regarding the Hyde Amendment, a legislative action that bans federal
funding for most abortions. Cardinal O’Malley states:
Allow me to ask for your assistance with a matter of the highest priority
concerning the protection of unborn children.
As Pope Francis has shared
with us,
every child is “a gift that changes the history of a family…and
this child needs to be welcomed, loved and cared for”.
For 45 years, annual passage of the “Hyde Amendment” in federal appropriations bills, by a bipartisan
coalition of members of Congress has ensured that federal tax dollars are not spent on abortions. It is
estimated that the “Hyde Amendment” has saved more than 2.4 million unborn children since 1976.
However, this year, the passage of the “Hyde Amendment” is seriously at risk.
In order that we do all that is possible to protect unborn children, it is critically important for
Catholics to send a strong and united message on behalf of the children and to do so before Congress
moves forward to authorize taxpayer-funded abortion.
Cardinal O’Malley asks that we join in Archdiocesan response to the USCCB’s nationwide effort during the
month of June, when Congress will begin the legislative process. The goal is for millions of Catholics to
sign the petition on NoTaxpayerAbortion.com. Please consider participating in this effort.
