Principal’s Message

November will see us complete the first term of the 2019-20 school year. With the end of our first reporting period, we complete report cards and provide them to parents, and we have the opportunity for oral reports or parent/student/teacher conferences. Each and every student has successes from this term and the oral conferences are a time for celebration. With that being said, we can ask our children each day what’s been going on with their learning. Here are some questions that you can ask your child…

What are you learning? (You can be more specific by saying...in math...in science...in science humaine).

Why do you think you are learning about this?

How are you doing? And, how do you know?

What can you do to get better?

What do you do when you are stuck on something or need help?

Making our questions more specific helps our children to remember their days and be able to talk about them.

Enjoy the conversation.

Remembrance Day Assembly An assembly for Remembrance

Day will be held on Thursday, November 7th at 10:30 a.m.

All parents are welcome to attend this ceremony!

For cadets, scouts, girl guides, etc. feel free to wear your uniforms for the procession at

the beginning of the ceremony. Sunday, November 3, 2019 Please remember to turn

your clocks back 1 hour!

candy at home that they collected. Please take

into consideration, healthy lunch choices when

sending treats. If you do send one treat in the lunch

If you need to contact the school, please call 204-878-4233 during the office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you are unable to call during these hours, you may send a fax 878-4237 or email eli@srsd.ca. You may also send a note with your child.

All visitors are to report to the main office.

All visitors, including parents, must report to the main office upon entering the school. We ask that parents do not go straight to their child’s classroom. If you are dropping something off for your child, please leave it at the office, and we will make sure he/she gets it. If you are coming to pick up your child before 3:10 p.m., please report to the office, and we will call your child down. If you are coming at the end of the day, please wait for your child in the front foyer.

Reminders re: Transportation

Change of Drop off:

If your child needs to be dropped off at another location, the transportation department requires written notice 24 hours in advance.

Picking up your child from school:

If your child is a bus student, and you will be picking him/her up, you must send a note to the school office, or call us by 2:45 p.m. The office gets very busy at the end of the school day, and it is difficult to inform all necessary parties on time if we get calls at the end of the day.

Dismissal

Parents are always welcome in our school. We love to see you and catch up with all the news.

However dismissal is a very busy time for our teachers. We really encourage parents to wait by the front entrance at dismissal time and not in the front of the classroom doors. If you wish to see a teacher after dismissal, please call, send them an e-mail to set up an appointment or wait until the students have been dismissed.

Notes from Home

It is not necessary to send more than one note per child (to the office, bus driver, teacher, etc.). All notes are handed in to the teacher, and sent to the office after announce- ments. The secretary will ensure that all necessary parties have received the information.

Allergy Alert!

The most common food allergies in children are: peanuts/

nuts, milk, eggs, seafood, and wheat. Please be aware that we have children with these allergies at ELI. Many of our students and teachers suffer from asthma and other res- piratory disorders. Students should restrain from using strong perfume and deodorant sprays in the school.

Medication Notice

To ensure the school is using current information about your child’s medication, the proper Regulation forms must be completed each year. If you require one for your child please contact the school. Reminder, that medication MUST be brought in by an adult and in its original contain- er. As per Divisional policy please be advised that school staff are not permitted to administer medication that is NOT prescribed by a physician.

Important Reminders (Please keep this page for future reference)

Reminders re: Absences

If your child will be absent, we ask that you, the parent/guardian, please call the school by 9:30 a.m. If you do not let us know why your child is absent, we must call you to verify the absence.

Please note: If your child is a bus student, you must also call the

Transportation Department to let them know your child will not be on the bus that morning.

Please remind your children that if they come in late, they must report to the office for a late slip.

Otherwise, the office does not know they have arrived, and they will remain marked as absent.

Based on its success last year, we once again partnered with Glenlea Greenhouses for our second fundraiser of the year, which is currently underway.

Orders are due back to the school no later than November 5th. This is the final fundraiser where proceeds will support school camp and/or the Quebec exchange for Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8. Funds raised by Kindergarten to Grade 4 will support PAC initiated playground improvements.

We are happy to announce that the PAC secretary position has been filled by Jennifer Mills. Welcome aboard Jennifer! PAC is always looking for new members as well as volunteers to help out with our various activities and fundraisers. If you want to join PAC you can do so at any time. Our monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month in the ELI staffroom, with the next meeting on November 5th at 6:30 p.m. We always look forward to hearing the voices of our parent community.

Milk Tickets are available for purchase online on our School Cash Online website.

Simply return a copy of your receipt with the student to school or send the

receipt to eli@srsd.ca and Michelle at the office will ensure that your child(ren) receives the milk tickets.

NUTRITION BITS AND BITES

Rethinking Rewards

Should Food be Used as a Reward?

 Using food rewards can be harmful for children.

 IF you use food as rewards, it can:

o Make it hard for children to listen to their natural hunger cues.

o Confuse the healthy eating messages that are being taught at home and school.

o Increase a child’s desire for sweets.

o Increases risk of dental cavities.

 Non-food rewards are the best way to support a child’s health, growth, and development!

 Want to start using non-food rewards?

Check out the “Recipe for Change” on the next page with several reward ideas for you to use!

Did you know?

The type of rewards we use impact a child’s

overall health and well-being.

Using non-food rewards also protects children with food allergies. Read more about non-food rewards here:
