LADY LIBERTY has invited us to visit!

The bus will be leaving St. Mary parking lot on Sat., June 16 at 8:45AM. After an early lunch at Ryan/McGuire’s Irish Pub/

Restaurant in NYC we head to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty. We will then have a few leisure hours at South St.

Seaport before returning home by approx. 8PM. Cost is $100 which includes lunch. Deadline (May 10) for reservations and payment is firm. Call Diane, 878- 3363 or www.preciousbloodparishmilford.org.

The St. Mary Ladies Guild will be hosting a WINE TASTING EVENING on Tuesday, May 8th at 7PM in Fr. Cronin Hall. Greg Davies of The Crushed Grape on Melba Street (and a St. Mary School alumnus) will be featured. Snacks and desserts will be available and there will also be a raffle. All ladies of the parish are welcome.

Dear Friends:

By the time you read these words, the celebrations of First Communion will have concluded for the year in our parish. This year, Precious Blood Parish welcomed one hundred thirty-one children to the Lord’s table for the first time. I wonder how many of us, even after so many years, can still remember the day of our First Communion? We should at least be able to remember some things about it, for the celebration of First Communion is a significant milestone in the life of every Catholic. I myself received First Communion fifty years ago this week, on May 11, 1968 at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Waterbury. I remember it as a sunny warm day and I also remember that almost eighty of us, the second grade class at SS. Peter & Paul School, made our First Communion together. As is often done even today, so then the girls wore white dresses, veils, and gloves and the boys blue trousers, white shirts and white ties. The point of my small trip down memory lane is to stress that we should even now appreciate the wonder that is the Eucharist and that our reception of what is the

“Sacrament of sacraments” should fill us with awe as much now, after so many years, as it did that day however many years ago.

This Thursday, May 10, is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, a holy day of obligation. There will be a Vigil Mass on Wednesday at 7:00 PM at St.

Agnes, and on Thursday, Masses at St. Mary’s will be celebrated at 7:00 and 9:00 AM and at 12:05 PM.

There will also be a Mass on Thursday morning at 9:00 at St. Agnes.

This week I leave for ten days of vacation in Florida. While I know that the parish is in good hands with Father Sam and Father Deny, I am happy that we will be sponsoring a Parish Mission that runs from Monday to Wednesday, May 14-16, with presentations each evening at 7:00, preceded by the recitation of the Rosary and followed by the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I am happy to welcome Father William Garrott, OP to our parish for the mission. He will speak at a number of Masses this weekend and help Father Sam and Father Deny with the celebration of Masses as well. Please make every effort to come to the mission presentations next week. A parish mission is a special moment of grace where we can encounter the Living God in new and even surprising ways. May God bless our mission with success!

Have a good week!

DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

“Conscience protection should not be subject to political whims. No one should be forced to violate their deeply held convictions about the sanctity of human life.” - Joint Statement by Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan and Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, USCCB

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Today’s gospel challenges us to “love one another as I have loved you.” Jesus is our model and he asks us to “lay down our life” (our time, attention, opinions and needs) for each other. This is the sacrament of the family, when God is made visible in our sacrificial love for one another.

Please welcome into our parish family the following children who were baptized at St.

Mary Church in the month of April:

Isabelle Conor Bowen, Christopher John Padrin, Christiano Manuel Queiros, Adriana Maria Rzezuski, James Francisco Velez, Aoife Grace Walker.

“Sometimes our actions speak for themselves; other times, words are needed. Whatever the situation, Jesus knows how to speak to each person’s heart; we simply need to follow where he leads.” - USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, “How to Build a Culture of Life.” www.usccb.org/culture-of-life

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.

Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Michael Casey USN, Pfc. Ron Murray, Maj. Jonathan Rembetsy, Pfc. Daniel Hewston, Maj . Jason Dymond USAF, Maj. Patrick T. Horvat USA, M.Sgt Joseph Eggersheim, Michael Eno, USN, Lt.

Stephen Shumaker, William F. Gilson, USAF, A1C Michael Foss, Lt. Col. Andrew Whiskeyman, Alec Rosette USN.

ST. MARY LADIES GUILD SCHOLARSHIP Applications for the Guild Scholarships &

Grants are available in the rectory during office hours.

Any 8th grade girl who will be attending a Catholic High School this fall, or is currently enrolled in one, is eligible. Applicants must be an immediate member of a family registered in Precious Blood Parish.

Completed applications must be returned to the rectory no later than 1:30PM Friday, May 18th. Call Martha DeFeo (475 422-3190) with any questions.

St. Mary School is hosting their 9th Annual Grandparents Day and Sprint

fundraiser on Friday, May 18th.

The school is always grateful for the generosity of our parishioners,

and asks if you would like to make a donation in honor of the day, you can do so online at www.sainrmaryschoolmilford.org or by sending it to the school office, 72 Gulf St. with a note that it is for SPRINT. If you are free that day, you are invited to come and be a part of one of the school’s most popular events. If you have questions regarding the event or donation, contact Christine Valiquette, [email protected], or 848-8843.

“CHANGE” FOR BABIES Next Sunday is Mother’s Day. Please take a baby bottle from the basket at the doors of the church and fill it with your loose change as part of your celebration of life. Your donation will

help change a life through “Helping Hands for Hurting Hearts,” the Pro-Life outreach program of Precious Blood Parish. We offer support through prayer

as well as by delivering clothes, diapers, toiletries, baby equipment, etc. to needy mothers who call us at 203 878-8857. May God bless you.

The Knights of Columbus are hosting their Annual LADIES KNIGHT OUT dinner on Friday, May 18th in Fr. Cronin Hall.

Tickets for this appreciation dinner for the women of Precious Blood Parish will be on

sale after each Mass on the weekend of May 12/13 in the rectory office.

“Oh, yes, the past can hurt. But you can either run from it or learn from it.”
