Information has licen received nt the national Democratic head- quarters that conmlcd effort is being made by Populists of Kan- sas to have the date of the nation-i-d
Populist convention changed from May 9 to July 4 and trans- ferred from Sioux Falls to Kansas City. According to reports brought by Democrats frcm the West about the meuting of the national committee ut Washington, the leaders were slightly embar- rassed over the fact that the Popu- lists had set their convention for May !). Although a majority of the Democratic committee is re- ported to have been averse to com- promising with the People's party, it wis admitted on all sides that were the Foj u'ista to select a candidate for vice president who would not 1)0 named at a Demo- cratic convention, the confusion attending the Hryan-Scwnl- l and
llryan-Watso- combinations of
181MÍ would be repeated.
Under these circumstances, members of the national commit- tee are anxious, therefore that the two parties should agree on both places on the national ticket. It is taken for granted that the Pop- ulists will nominate Bryan, and H is presumed that their managers wo dispose I favorably '.oward Caldwell of Arkansas as a running in.ttc.
Caldwell also has many friend on the Democratic side, and inas- much as the Arkansas judge has
Hti intimate friendin Senator Allen
at
Nebraska, it is figured Alien would be pleased to use h's in- fluence to have the People's parly convention transferred to K'insas City. The repi rted dan is that the Populists shall meet the day following the Democratic conven- tion aul indorse the Democraticnominees.
According to Secretary Walsh ofthe Dem wratic national commit- tee, Caldwell will have a strong following in the
I)jnicr.itie

The finance bill has passed both houses of Congress, and only waits the signature of the President to make it a law. The issue of the administration on the money ques-
tion is now definitely understood.
This law has resulted too, solely from therepublican party without the consent of any other nation on earth.
A campaigu suit is the latestfad of the ltoswell Military Institute.
What has a campaign suit to do with the education of ayoung New Mexican besides it will hit the pocket of his dady so hard that a tremendous kick will boregistered against an institution which makes campaign suitsa factor of expense inthe education of his youth.
Why all this kick about a paper trust? Is n trust of one character any worse than a trust of another kind? Ring olf. Newspapers have no more right to condemn a paper trust than they have to fight other combinations, which they pass by apparently overlooked for the reason that so long as individ- ual interests are not interfered with the other fellow no matter what maybo the result to his pros-
perity as effected by trust greed, isleft to fight hia battles alone, while newspapers who are owned
ly
trusts themselves are continual- ly howling about higher prices of newsprint. The passage of the Puerto Eican tariff bill is an imphatic denial to the new possessions of constitu- tional rights, on which the federal government was founded. The only potent reasons for such a measure is that certain interests feared free trade with the Islands would be taken as a precedent in the Philippines. Itisfortunate for the Democratic party that this per-nicio-
measure was enacted by a
republican administration, for when the evils consequent to such legislation begin to be felt in this country, it will be n stumbling block over which republicans will tumblo at every mile post on the path which leads to political pre-
ferment in the coming elections.
