Immaculate Conception Church - November 23 & 24, 2019

We Pray November Ordinary Time

As we approach the end of our church liturgical year, we look to our common future and live ever fully the Promise today. Our response to the Hebrew Scripture is the canticle from the Beatitudes: “Rejoice and be glad; blessed are you, holy are you for yours is the Kingdom of God.” This Good News is proclaimed on All Saints Day, the wonderful feast of all God’s people. Our Gospel Acclamation majestically sings: “Alleluia; Jesus is our King.”

Our church year concludes with the solemnity of Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior of the whole world. Coming to the Lord’s table we remember, “by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.” God’s love for us is so deep that Jesus could give His life for all people. We can live in the freedom of God’s People. Our lives are transformed to be that same Christ for each other!

. ."Through the storm, through the night; lead us on to the Light. Precious Lord take my hand; lead me home."

Each week there will be activity pages at the back of the church for students.

Our next Family Workshop is December 15 at the Hoosick Falls HS cafeteria following Sunday Mass from 10:15 am to 11:30 am. The whole family is invited. Our focus will be Advent and how we can serve others.

Can you help?

We need several new “collection counters” on Sun- day mornings after the 9 AM Mass. Teams meet at the rectory and are done within an hour. If you can assist with this important ministry, please contact Mike Shea or our parish office.

Reflecting on the Word

How do you picture royalty? Living in palaces? Wearing gold, with beloved crowns? As people with physical and mental strength? Our readings pain another picture. First, we see David, a shepherd. Earlier passages describe him as the runt of the litter, not thought worthy of Samuel’s consideration. Yet this runt, this shep- herd, is anointed king of all Israel.

Luke offers us an innocent criminal, whose throne is the cross, an instrument of death. He is sneered at and jeered. He is also affirmed by a true criminal: “We have been condemned justly, but this man has done noth- ing criminal” (Luke 23:41). Seemingly powerless, Jesus has the power to promise Paradise to that man.

Paul quotes a hymn that paints our king as firstborn of the dead, head of the church, and a reconciler who makes peace through the blood of that cross. The king’s role, as noted today in “Understanding the Word,” is to offer mercy and clemency, which Jesus does by means of sacrificial love. How different from kings and queens who use power for revenge and destruction.

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe paints a picture unlike our common understand- ing of royalty and offers us this job description: 1. Be shepherds who serve the sheep, find strength in weak- ness and power in vulnerability; 2. admit and name our sins, powerlessness, and defects to find reconciliation with God, self, and each other; and 3. be ambassadors of reconciliation to find peace in the difficulties that occur in life. Then, set free from slavery, we will serve Christ’s majesty and ceaselessly proclaim his praise.

Let Christ change our view of royalty and how to serve Christ the King.

We Gather at the Lord’s Table

We are working on refurbishing our Altar Table from Immaculate Con- ception Church. We are using an old base altar from the Church. The new table top is being fashioned from our church’s original foundational beams. Through it, an image of the rivers that run through our parish is being artistically created. We need small stones, pebbles, and rocks from you...from the Hoosic, Walloomsac, Little Hoosic, and White Creek to place within our “River of Life” in the Lord’s Table. The new Table will be from and of us...from and of our Creator. Please bring your stones to our office. Remember the old altar table top was dam- aged by the falling ceiling.

THERE IS AN URGENT NEED FOR:

Peanut butter, cold cereal, shampoo, toothpaste and brushes, and feminine hygiene items.

Please bring these items to our donation box in church. There is always a need for old bags to be reused.

Food Pantry Volunteers...We are looking for volunteers to help. For information and training, contact Dianne Hosterman at 686-5310.
