Good Books & Movies
Stories are at the heart of our faith. The Bible is one long story shaped by the many varied books con- tained therein. Some have a historical and biographical, some are collections of poetry, wise sayings, and songs.
We must understand that the story didn’t end with the book of Revelation just because the Bible does. The story of God and mankind continues with us. Seeking out good stories, fiction or none fiction, help us to better understand this art form. When we understand the art of storytelling, we understand our own story and the Bible better.
One of my favorite authors is Flannery O’Connor for her gripping short stories. They can get gruesome, but they uncover so much of the mystery of the heart with its resentments and longings. Another author I’ve been en- joying recently is J.R.R. Tolkien as I’m finishing up his trilo- gy The Lord of the Rings. The film adaptation of the trilogy from the early 2000’s still hold up today as excellent story- telling through cinema. His heroes can inspire the reader to Christ-like greatness as they wage battle against Temp- tation itself. They’re greatest weapons are humility, cour- age, and perseverance. Some of you may also have seen The Mysterious Benedict Society from Disney, another show I’ve recently watched. With the help of excellent art direction, the series opens the viewer to the wonder of beauty and human ingenuity as the young heroes that co- operation in their diverse talents leads to success. They reveal something of our calling to be the many parts of one Body in Christ, cooperating with the Spirit towards the goal of proclaiming the Gospel. Plus it shares its name with St. Benedict.
Next time you pick up a book or movie, reflect on
it. How has your life been similar or different from the sto-
ry? What characters do you want to imitate or not? What
reminds you of the Gospel? Let your imagination explore
what could have happened differently in the story and in
your life.
