TODAY’S GAME: Game one of a four-game series against the Palm Beach Cardinals (STL) from Spectrum Field...Clearwater is coming off a four-game split against the Tampa Tarpons (NYY) at George M. Steinbrenner field...First of two series (eight games) between the two clubs in 2019...The Threshers finished 2-4 against the Cardinals in 2018, including 1-3 at home.

TODAY’S STARTING PITCHERS: 22-year-old Spencer Howard makes his sixth start of the season - fifth with Clearwater - in game one of the four-game series against the Palm Beach Cardinals (STL) at Spectrum Field on Monday night...The 6-foot-3 hurler did not factor into the decision against the GCL Blue Jays on June 27...The right-hander gave up just one hit, walked a man and struck out five across three innings of work on 24 pitches - 20 strikes...Monday will be Howard’s first career start against the St. Louis Cardinals affiliate.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Clearwater Threshers were swept in a twin bill against the Tampa Tarpons to close out the four-game series at George M. Steinbrenner Field, 4-1 and 2-0...Danny Mayer drove home the only run of the day for the visitors with a solo home run over the wall in left in the fifth inning of game one...Alejandro Requena tossed six innings in game two, and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts.

REQUENA’S REVENGE: After allowing eight runs over 9.2 innings in his first two starts against the Tarpons, Alejandro Requena allowed just two tallies across six frames in the losing effort...The native of Venezuela tied a season-high with eight strikeouts and did not issue any free passes...The right-hander earned his second consecutive quality start, but has lost both games.

MASHING MAYER: Danny Mayer whacked another home run in game one of the doubleheader against the Tarpons on Sunday, marking back-to-back game the slugger has left the yard...Away from Spectrum Field this season, the 24-year-old has six of his eight round-trippers, and has 11 of his 15 RBIs...The right-handed batter has a higher slugging percentage on the road with a .515 mark compared to .488, and has four more hits on the road.

ROAD STREAK SNAPPED: Sunday’s losses to the Tarpons snapped the Threshers’ road winning streak at six games...Over the last eight road games, Clearwater has still outscored its opponents, 28-20...Clearwater has managed just 10 runs during its four-game home losing streak, in which it has yielded 22 runs.

HOME SWEET HOME?: With the 0-3 start to the month of July, Clearwater has fallen below .500 with a 20-21 record at Spectrum Field in 2019...The discrepancy in stats between home and road games is not that different for the Threshers...The club has a .255 average at home compared to .242 on the road, but has scored 18 less runs (171-189)...Clearwater has a .692 OPS at Spectrum Field, but has posted a .688 on the road...On the mound, the pitching staff does have a higher ERA on the home bump (3.63-3.04), and has a higher average against (.241-.233).

SEARCHING FOR RUNS: After plating 47 runs through the first seven games of the second half, the Clear- water offense has managed just 41 runs the last 13 contests...Over the stretch, Clearwater has managed just a .208 average with a chance to drive a runner home (21-for-101)...The Philadelphia Phillies affiliate has 83 hits over the 13-game stretch, with 30 going for extra bases (36 percent).

NO JUNE SWOON: Everything went the way of the Clearwater Threshers in the month of June, as the club posted a league-best, 18-7 record during the third month of the season...The offense had a dip in production in average (.246 in June to .277 in May), on-base percentage (.310 in June to .326 May) and OPS (.690 in June compared to .737 in May), but excelled in the pitching department...The arms dropped their ERA by more than a point from 3.69 in May down to 2.56 in June, and had 28 less walks with 68 in June compared to 96 in May...The bullpen took a step forward in June as well, going 9-2 and 10-for-11 in save opportunities...Relievers also posted a 1.58 ERA (17er/97.1ip), while collecting 119 strikeouts (one shy of tying April’s season-high).

STRIKEOUT KINGS: The trio of Colton Eastman (4), Tyler Carr (1) and Alejandro Requena (8) combined for 13 strikeouts in Sunday’s doubleheader, lifting Clearwater’s pitching total to 827 - 51 more than the Fort Myers Miracle (MIN) for the top-spot in the Florida State League.
