“Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom does not belong to this world.”
(JOHN 18:36).
Life is short. How much time, energy and money do you put into building “your” kingdom here on earth? We all know we
can’t take it with us. The real kingdom is in the next life. Yet, how much time, energy and money do you invest in working for that eternal kingdom? Ask God for His guidance. Detach from earthly possessions. In Stewardship, generously share your material goods with others for the greater glory of God.
“You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel…” – Ezekiel 33:7

You probably own a refrigerator. If you do, you certainly put things in it. Do you post anything on it?
Are there photos of family and friends? Reminders of doctor appointments? If you have small children, there’s probably artwork on your refrigerator. How better to appreciate the gift from your child’s art class than to post it on the refrigerator? The refrigerator, thanks to its contents, is extremely important to the household and is one of the most visited places in the home. Once placed on the fridge, it may be difficult to later dispose of the artwork. How can something go from the fridge to the trash?
Technically, our church has a refrigerator – a mini-fridge in the sacristy used to keep the hosts, water, and wine cool. But the church proper has something far better than a refrigerator. It has an altar. It has pride of place and is visited by everyone at Mass who approaches for the “bread of angels” at Communion time.
The gifts placed on the altar become holy, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ (notice the gifts go from lowercase to uppercase). From time to time, we also place other things on the altar.
Right now, the All Souls Day envelopes, marked with the names of our loved ones, occupy a corner of the altar.
Eighty years ago, Christ the King Church was completed and dedicated. Today, at the 11 AM Mass, Bishop Sullivan will bless our church’s new altar. The Mass will be concelebrated by priests who served at the church over the years. After the bishop’s homily and the profession of faith, we will follow the special rite of the dedication of an altar. By dedication, we meaning the altar is now dedicated, or reserved, for Mass. It is no longer an ordinary table and therefore cannot be used for anything else.
The altar will be anointed with chrism oil, one of three sacramental oils along with the oil of catechumens (used in the baptism of infants and the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) and the oil of the sick.
We have all been anointed with chrism at Confirmation. Clergy are also anointed with chrism at their ordination.
After the anointing, incense will be burned on the altar. Then the altar cloth will be placed, the candles lit, and the Eucharist celebrated. For at least another generation, the people of Christ the King parish will place their gifts on this new altar. Their gifts will be made holy by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, such that when they receive back the gifts from God’s unbeatable generosity, they themselves will be made holy.
Due to his immigration problem, Fr. Jakub will no longer preside at the altar. Many of you have shared your appreciation for his ministry and a few have offered some legal assistance. Appropriately, he leaves the rectory now that his work on the church jubilee is completed.
Next Sunday, the First Sunday of Advent, a new cleric will assist at the altar, Deacon Michael Scott.
Deacon Scott lives locally and just completed an assignment at St. Peter Church, Merchantville. I anticipate that he will assist at Mass every Sunday, preach one Sunday a month, and divide the baptisms with me. As clergy, he will also be an ex officio member of the pastoral council. His ministry will be particularly important while we are without a second priest. Please welcome him to the parish when you see him.
“And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne”
(Revelation 8:3).

I confess to you my brothers and sisters – for me, November is a tough month. The darkness feels different in November. The sunlight goes away far earlier than many of us desire, bringing a kind of darkness I do not always appreciate . It’s cold, usually windy – all “good” reasons to skip those morning walks before work.
For sure it is a reminder that while filled with gratitude for the extra hour of sleep we had, I wonder today about how much gratitude I (we?) really hold in our hearts for life as it has been given to us on any given day.
November holds the “in between” and we can limit that “in between” as a reminder that winter is coming. But I wonder if the real message of the change is both a gift and as well as stark reminder of more than that.
Jeanette Winterson writes the following: “November holds for us the “in between” – between warmth and cold, light and dark, between living and dying. It holds open possibilities which echo our own eventual winding down and gives us the opportunity to live in the richest deepest way… offering us paths to those deeper layers unavailable to us during the rest of the year.”
Perhaps this time of year offers for many of us the opportunity to let go of one thing and “fall” into another”
demanding a trust we have never imagined. The Rule of Benedict as offered to us by Sister Joan Chittister would remind us that “Life changes drastically….the things we love begin to die right before our eyes. The roses begin to shrivel – the colors around us darken – the streets get quieter and the earth rests.”
Sister Joan challenges us further that this is indeed a time of great life learning:
“We learn that we cannot control the passage of time in life. We learn to accept each of the stages of life with serenity. We learn to look to new moments in life with hope rather than despair. We learn that the opposite of
life is not death; it is fear. We learn to see death as a necessary part of life. The Rule of Benedict teaches us to practice serenity, to accept what is, to let go of unnecessary things, to “keep death always before our eyes,” not so that we become morbid but so that we can come to see the value and the promise of every new moment. It is only when we forget death that we can delude ourselves into believing that what is must always be. Death, on the other hand, is proof that the God of Surprises has new things waiting for us always and that every new
moment is a gift of new life.”
Rev. Mark-David Janus tells us that Jesus encourages us to let go of one thing, one way of living and fall into heaps of leaves worn yellow from wisdom, our green spent into multiple colors through a life leading others
into justice and peace. He reminds us to embrace justice, forgiveness, mercy – feed the hungry, clothe the naked, ….all the while first letting go…
His wisdom is one I really need to hear over and over:
If I want the angels to sweep me into God’s joy, I have to let go of the branch to which I cling for dear life and fall into the love Jesus asks of me.
Is that a kind of trust I can imagine?

Excercise Power of Love
Today, on this last Sunday in Ordinary Time, we celebrate a solemnity with an awesome title.
Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe! In the four Scripture readings we hear various titles and descriptions that we Christians attribute to Jesus. In the Book of Daniel Jesus is the “Son of Man” who has kingship and rules in glory over all people.
In the Psalm Jesus is the king robed with majesty. The Book of Revelation calls Jesus the “Alpha”
which means beginning, and the “Omega” which means end. The Alpha and Omega has glory and power forever. Finally, in the Gospel, Pontius Pilate asks Jesus if he is a king. Jesus answers that his Kingdom is real but is not an earthly one. Jesus’ power and ours is the power of love. Jesus’ example shows us that strong, steady love is the power that can change things for the good. So, we face the power of the bully with the power of love and goodness. We face the power of sickness and death with the power of love and caring., those in need, those who live near us and far from us. We live God’s truth by loving and caring for everyone including our enemies and strangers, those in need, those who live near us and far from us. When we wield our power, love, we acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the king of our hearts and of the entire universe.
