English Language Programmes

IELTS

This programme will prepare students for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Students will become familiar with the various tasks and question types within the test as well as practising all test parts. The classes will involve group and individual time with the teacher, group work and individual work as well as student centred learning opportunities outside of the classroom. There is a large element of coursework attached to this course. Although there will be a language improvement element to this course, emphasis is on familiarization with the elements of the test.

This course is delivered flexibly according to the needs of the students. Delivery ranges from 4 hours per day to 4 hours per week – the length of the whole course can range from 48 to 240 hours.

On the course students will:

 Develop and practise strategies for all question types in all four papers  Consider typical difficulties students encounter and how to avoid them

 Focus on vocabulary and grammar improvement related to specific exam tasks

 Practise major writing task types with constructive feedback on strengths and weaknesses  Experience first-hand, as observer or candidate, a complete IELTS type speaking test

Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic)

The programme provides specialised materials and tutorial support in preparation for the Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic) which is recognised by universities worldwide as the IELTS equivalent. PTE (Academic) is a computer-based test of English language proficiency approved by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) for Tier 4 (student visa) applications. Results are returned typically within 5 business days.

In preparation for the PTE (Academic) we are offering the Pearson Test Preparation Course:

2 weeks’ duration, 25 hours per week, with 5 hours per week on each of the following topics. The course can also be delivered flexibly, with the 120 hours’ tuition spread over various time periods.

Syllabus covers the topics of Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Computer literacy.

All students will receive the Pearson Official Guide to the PTE. The skills practised will be based upon those outlined at the beginning of Chapters 3-6 of the Pearson Guide and the advice on improving those skills in the body of each Chapter. The classes will involve group and individual time with the teacher, group work and individual work as well as student-centred learning opportunities outside of the classroom.

Homework Activities will be set each day from a wide selection of materials using the language types involved in the PTE with the focus on the use of Academic English.

Computer literacy sessions are included to give students complete familiarity with the ‘qwerty’ keyboard in order to be able to complete the on-line test within the timescales expected and to raise the speed of their responses, thus increasing their potential scores.

SOME OF OUR RECENT ACTIVITIES

BRAZIL

CIEC is using its expertise and long experience in English language teaching and teacher training to respond to the market need for trained teachers in both the private and state sectors of Brazil.

One in four people in the world speak English, while in Brazil only 5% of its population of 200 million have English language skills. CIEC has embarked on a programme of English-language teacher training in Brazil which is designed to rapidly equip teachers with the skills they need to teach effectively in the classroom. The two-stage EFL Teacher Training Programme (TTP), leading to preparation for CELTA, is designed to be adapted to suit local conditions and can be held as a long or short course, either part- or full-time. The course includes teaching theory and methodology, language improvement and teaching practice.

In January 2014 teacher trainers from CIEC travelled to

Curitiba in Brazil to deliver a preliminary one-month intensive course for a group of trainee teachers from a range of teaching and non-teaching backgrounds. The course prepared the trainees either for employment in language schools and mainstream education, or allowed those with experience to work on improving their teaching techniques and language use.

CHINA

In February 2014, a group of 12 students from Harbin, in Heilongjiang Province, attended their Winter Camp in Cambridge, hosted by CIEC. During their week with us they learned about many aspects of British life, including Religion in Britain, church architecture, British education, natural history, European art and the work of Darwin. This was followed up by visits to King’s College, Trinity College and the Fitzwilliam Museum. They learned through a number of different activities, eg quizzes and they improved their spoken English through rhymes, songs, drama and role-play.

INDIA

In October 2013, CIEC delivered a module on Global Immersion to MBA and PGDM students at the Acharya Institute of Management and Science (AIMS) in Bangalore, with over 150 students enrolled. The CIEC-developed module was delivered in Bangalore and covered a range of topics including global business scenarios and practices, multi-national team dynamics, global decision-making processes, negotiation skills, and cultural and behavioural aspects of international business.

Staff and students from AIMS will make a return visit to CIEC in Cambridge, UK,
