Why study this programme?

Planning and controlling the allocation of resources and the detailed and prescient matching of design and production to the needs of the market for built space are at the very core of the construction and property industries.

This MSc has been developed in response to the growing demand from construction and property industry firms for professionals capable of strategic thinking and creative responses to volatile economic conditions. It supports existing professionals in their continuing professional development and opens up opportunities in a wide variety of project management roles.

You will extend your understanding, analysis, and decision-making abilities within key areas of this developing area of study. You will also:

Examine real estate development and investment projects in wider global, economic and financial contexts

Develop your skills for effective decision making in investment and development projects

Tailor your studies to your particular needs and interests, reflecting the broad and diverse nature of the project management role within the UK and internationally. This MSc is offered by the Department of Property & Construction Management in the School of Architecture, Design & Construction. Its staff have extensive experience providing postgraduate programmes relating to the delivery and operation of sustainable built environments, project management, construction management and economics, real estate development, and investment and facilities management.

Based in south-east London, within easy reach of some of the world’s most iconic buildings, the School of Architecture, Design & Construction, part of the Faculty of Architecture, Computing & Humanities, offers an innovative and exciting learning environment. We draw on multidisciplinary teaching and research strengths in architecture, landscape architecture, design, property, surveying, and project and construction management.

Our programmes are supported by a committed team with a wide range of UK and international experience in teaching, industry and research. We also maintain strong links with industry, helping to ensure our programmes stay relevant through changes in the sector.

The school is currently located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. In 2014, the school will move to the brand-new Stockwell Street building (pictured, right) in the heart of historic Greenwich, complete with studio and living roof spaces, a model workshop, and digital design and animation suites. A contemporary library facility will provide staff and students with an attractive, modern and flexible environment, complete with cutting-edge technology and multimedia facilities supported by high-level network connectivity and wireless access.

Career opportunities

Graduates from this programme can pursue project management roles with property developers, construction contractors, professional practices, regeneration agencies or local and central government. Subject to appropriate practice, you will be able to become a chartered surveyor.

Teaching and assessment

Distance learning programmes are supported by electronic study guides and textbooks. You will have full access to the university’s resources, including the electronic journal collection, online textbooks and the postal loan service. Key facts

Attendance: Distance learning

(a full-time/part-time programme is also available)

Entry requirements: You should have:

EITHER an honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) relating to the built environment

OR an appropriate professional qualification with at least five years’ relevant professional experience.

• You will also be expected to demonstrate an understanding of, and experience in, the built environment. Applicants from a non-cognate background or falling outside the above criteria will be considered on their merits, on a case-by-case basis.

• If you were educated in a language other than English and/or in a country where English speakers are in a minority, you should have a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill) or an equivalent rating in another Secure English Language Test.
