Evaluation criteria N and V for graduate students at the Politecnico

The students who have obtained a Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science) from the Politecnico di Milano and apply will obtain a positive evaluation if:

a. at the end of the September exam sessions in the second year they have the parameters N (ECTS acquired) and V (average weight) corresponding to the values decided by the schools.

Students can check the N and V scores set by the schools according to specific criteria, by accessing Online Services (www.polimi.it/onlineservices - Career).

In some cases, for example careers with change of course, the N and V scores cannot be calculated. In these circumstances, a specific evaluation will be carried out by the school, that may provide a specific ranking list.

b. They have the English language requisites (www.polimi.it/en/guides - Guide to the English language) required by the teaching regulations for their own course.

c. They have obtained their degree in four academic years since1 enrolment

1

Please not that verification of obtaining the first-level Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science) within a maximum of four academic years since enrolment considers the total number of academic years over which the academic curriculum is distributed.

The closure of the academic curriculum coincides with achievement of all 180 ECTS for the first-level Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science), including the final test,

The English language test and, where required, the completion of curriculum work experience. Please note that presenting a study plan aimed at achieving missing attendance or excess attendance for Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) programmes brings about the advancement of the academic year.

For example, degree exam sessions for February 2016 is considered the last one for the Academic Year 2014/15 for students who have not submitted a new study plan for the Academic Year 2014/15 (as they are not obliged to acquire missing attendances and/or are not interested in entering attendances in excess in the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science)

programmes, while it is considered the first exam session for the Academic Year 2015/16 for students who have presented a new study plan (as interested in acquiring missing attendances or excess attendances for the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science).

(7)

7 d. They enrol on a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) programme that continues on

from the first level course.

The students above must, however, submit their evaluation application.

For students that do not have the requested scores for the N and V parameters, who have not graduated within 4 years of enrolment and for those who come from other universities, access to the Laurea

Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) is subject to evaluation of their previous career by the School Commissions or CCS (Study Programme Board), whose decision is final.

In the event of exclusion, the commissions must provide suitable reasons for their decision.

The individual Teaching regulations for the Programme (www.polimi.it  programmes  course catalogue) set out any further curriculum requisites necessary for being admitted to the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) courses.

For each Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) the teaching regulations will state the criteria that will be followed for allowing or refusing admission.

These criteria must include one or more of the following items:

a. The Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science) score, or the average weight of the entire career already completed, with a minimum of 150 ECTS; in this second case, an admission sub condicione can be decided, notwithstanding the fact that the student must submit self-certification of the Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science) by the deadlines foreseen for enrolment

b. the number of years taken to obtain the Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science) (e.g. By the 4th academic year since enrolment, i.e. By the February following the completion of the 4th year since enrolment)

c. The minimum number of ECS acquired in specific sets of Disciplinary Scientific Sectors (SSD) (perhaps indicating the equivalences with SSD that do not belong to the Classes of

Architecture/Design/Engineering)

d. Evaluation of skills acquired also via curriculum /letter of motivation/references/possible interview/certification of relevant work experience (objective documentation of this experience may for example allow the CCS Commission to derogate from the limit of the years taken to graduate.

Evaluation test results

Results will not be published at the same time for all students.

Some commissions, in fact, publish the result of all students at the same time, at the end of the evaluation period, others publish them as soon as each applicant has been evaluated.

As the Commissions in charge of evaluation vary for each Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) programme, it is possible that some students see the result before the others.

Changes and transfers

 Coming from Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) at other universities  Coming from Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) at the Politecnico di Milano  Coming from programmes that are part of the Min. Decree 509/99 system

Students already enrolled in a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) programme, who intend to change course or school or to transfer from another university, must have the same requisites and respect the same deadlines for submitting applications for evaluation and enrolment, described above. Warning: Transfers and changing in the second semester is not allowed.

Students coming from another university must acquire at least 60 ECTS at the Politecnico, equivalent to one year of attendance.

Individual Schools may have further admission criteria. We recommend you check the web sites.

In particular, the School of Design offers a pre-evaluation service of applications sent to the school itself (www.design.polimi.it)

Steps after enrolment

Study plan

Presentation of the Study Plan:

After registration, it is necessary to submit a yearly study plan via Online Services

(www.polimi.it/onlineservices) stating the courses that you intend to take, within the periods set out on the academic calendar (www.polimi.it/en/academic-calendar  courses  calendar-lessons-exams) The Study Plan remains valid for one year.

For the Schools of Engineering and Architecture and Society, it is however possible to make changes to the attendances required for the second semester of the same academic year, in the interval set on the Academic Calendar.

The study plan must take into account all the restrictions decided by the Commission and cannot exceed 80 ECTS per year. Specifically:

- Any teaching obligations associated with the relevant academic year will be calculated in the total of ECTS requested per year and for the purpose of acquiring the qualification.

- Any exam validations will be converted to lines on the plan, which will register the completed acquisition (by validation) of the ECTS linked to the courses offered as part of the chosen Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science).

- Any attendance validations that will allow the student to take the exam, in the first available session will be calculated in the total of ECTS of the year

It is necessary in all cases to abide by the rules on verifying knowledge of the English language (for more information, consult the Guide to the English language (www.polimi.it/en/guides ) and the prerequisites for entrance, foreseen for enrolment in the same programme in the Academic Year 2015/2016 (consult the Teaching Regulations of the specific School in the section

(20)

20 - Any bans

Attendances obtained do not expire, but are acquired and it is not necessary to re-enter them each year. The maximum number of ECTS that can be selected for each academic year is 80 and the minimum is 32. Failure to present a study plan according to the established deadlines will bring about a fine of

€ 100.00, to be paid at the same time as paying the second instalment.

Publication of Allocation (Schools of Architecture and Design)

Previously Approved Study Plans (PSPA) are a part of some Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science), where laboratories are divided up, that students must choose when presenting their study plan, in order of preference.

The allocation of the student in one of the selected options will take place according to the homogeneous distribution of the teaching load among the courses. The schools will indicate availability of places for each programme. Allocation of the student takes place according to the criteria established by each school’s regulations.

Policard

A few weeks after enrolment, the Policard will be sent to the student’s address. The card allows the student to use the facilities provided by the Politecnico di Milano: access to computer rooms and reading rooms.

While you are waiting for your Policard, you can access the libraries by showing surveillance staff the enrolment receipt and ID document (or a self-certificate of attendance).

Before use, it is necessary to enable the Policard by accessing the specific section of Online Services  Activation of magnetic card.

Lectures timetable

A few days before the start of lessons, the lesson timetable can be checked in Online Services, together with the time and classroom where the classes selected in the study plan will be held.

ALTA SCUOLA POLITECNICA (ASP)

Alta Scuola Politecnica (ASP) is a path parallel to the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science), started up in 2004 by the Politecnico di Milano and the Politecnico di Torino, and focuses on

interdisciplinary teaching and the creation of multidisciplinary projects.

For each ASP cycle, 150 students are selected from among architects, designers and engineers, 25% of whom are overseas students, 50-60% from the best graduate students from the 1st level degrees at the two Politecnicos and the remaining students chosen from the best 1st level degrees from other Italian

universities.

To apply, it is necessary to have an average of more than 27/30 (for the students from the two universities, also to be part of the top 7.5% of students on each Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science)

programme, excellent knowledge of the English language and suitable motivation, verified during a special interview that is part of the selection process. At the end of two years of activity, ASP students obtain the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) from both universities.

To continue the ASP experience beyond the two-year course, the successful ASP graduate students have formed the “ASP Alumni” association.

The teaching course is based on interdisciplinary courses and multidisciplinary projects. The official language is English.

ASP courses are typically divided into Winter, Spring and Summer Schools, each lasting one week, and take place in various locations in Italy.

The ASP projects aim to experiment with both specific knowledge acquired during the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) and cross-the-board knowledge taught during the ASP courses, on topics linked with interdisciplinary subjects in innovation and in particular the development of complex systems in multidisciplinary contexts.

The eleventh cycle began in February 2015.

More information about the ASP programme, the projects selected in the first nine cycles, admission criteria and enrolment modes can be found on the website www.asp-poli.it.
