On a hot evening in Launceston, my son and I had a wander around the neighbourhood of Invermay and were amazed to stumble over the first Jewish cemetery. The South Street burial ground was deeded to the city of Launceston in 1938, the headstones were removed, and the land was turned into a park. The site is now marked simply by a sign and a modest plaque, which lists all those known to be buried there. This discovery launched me into months of research and study, and culminated in my talk to the Jewish Genealogy and History Society in September. If anyone would like to see the Powerpoint I created for that presentation, please be in touch, and I'll happily email it to you. When it was all over, I realised that my research had led me to read parts of five books, look up numerous internet citations, and interview a number of people. Somehow it didn't seem like that much work because I so enjoyed doing it. Who knows what lies in the future?

My own family's history is quite sparse, and virtually impossible to trace back further than two generations. What I learned in the course of this project is just how rewarding it can be to uncover history, even if not my own. It is gratifying to me simply to know that there are those in Australia—including

some in our congregation—who are deeply grounded in a history of hundreds of years. Am Yisrael Chai—the Jewish people live!

Shannyn Gelbart Returns!

We really loved having Centre for Living Judaism fellow Shannyn Gelbart with us in late June. What a treat that was! It's wonderful that she's been able to find time to come back and visit us again over the weekend of October 31 to November 2. Here is what we have planned:

 Shannyn will co-lead services on Friday evening in what is sure to be a magical night. Please bring a sweet or savoury dish for a BYO dinner afterwards. The cost is $5 per person or $10 for a family.

 Shannyn will also share her music at Shabbat services on November 1 and hang around for a sing-along afterwards. Please bring a packed lunch and prepare to sing!

 Saturday evening Shannyn will once again coordinate a teen gathering from 7:00 to 9:00pm. The cost will be $10 for pizza and soft drinks.

 Finally, on Sunday morning 2 November, the Rabbi and Shannyn will co-lead a family education day during normal Cheder hours. This is an opportunity for parents and children to participate in activities together and do some terrific learning.

In uncertain times, it is important to think about what we have.

As I write this I am in Melbourne visiting my family and my 92 year old father. I have just taken him for a meal at the retirement “hotel” in which he spent many years living in an apartment.

Currently, he is living in a very comfortable nursing home, but it’s not the same thing.

So, when I said we were going to visit the old place and have a meal there, his eyes glowed with pleasure, almost childlike pleasure.

I can tell you that childlike pleasure is not something he used to show. Like me, he took joy very seriously. Part of me thinks how pathetic it is that at the end of life, the opportunity to go out should occasion such unalloyed joy. You may well agree with that point of view.

On the other hand there is something wonderful in thinking that at the other end of childhood, there can be a rediscovery of joy that was there in childhood. As we got to his old place, there were so many people who beamed welcome to my dad – people who last saw him two or three years ago. Their welcome showed me that even those whose names he had forgotten – and, of course, that was all of them – remembered him with kindness and affection. Now that dementia has eaten holes in his memory, it’s not something he can return, except with a beaming smile. He was not and is not an angel, but there is something in him that brought out those feelings. For some reason, he has been able to generate warmth and affection in people. I can only hope that some of it is hereditary.

The news is full of fear and uncertainty. Now, in these times of preparation for the new year, it may be time just to hold those closest to us even tighter and know the joy of having them. Because we know that we hold our loved ones and our friends on loan. We borrow them from eternity.

Kol Nidrei Appeal

May I remind you that Kol Nidrei is the time of our annual appeal for funds to support the wonderful work of our Rabbi.

As you know, we depend on your

donation to fund her work, which I will detail in the annual presidential begging speech on Yom Kippur. This year we will be trialling our special Kol Nidrei donation card, to make giving easier. It will allow you to make your pledge of funds there and then.

Just fold down the tab of the card which represents your donation and hand it back to us.

Then you can handle the actual business of money or the electronic transfer of digits which approximates it later when you are back in your ordinary lives.

Let’s treat each other more carefully. Let’s appreciate the precious gift of love and friendship while we have it. Let’s seek forgiveness of those we have hurt, however inadvertently, and let us look forward to a year of greater kindness.

May 5775 be a year of peace and health for all of us. Shana Tovah Tikatevu,

Ron Hoenig President

Torah Portions הרותהמ םיקלח

Regina Zielinski was my hero. Regina was my hero not because of how she survived, but because of how she lived. Lived and thrived. Many of you will have heard her tell the story of her dramatic escape from Sobibor, running out the main gates through a hail of machine gun fire and exploding mines. She spoke of her thoughts when she reached the forest beyond. She felt then that it would be okay if she died right there and then, because she was now breathing free air. Instead, she was blessed with another 71 years of life, and she lived every day with joy.

This week's Torah portion will be read out again in two weeks on Yom Kippur morning. It includes this famous passage: “I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life – that you and your descendants might live”. Many of us reach a point when that choice lies before us. Loved ones may have died, our bodies might be wracked with pain, something precious may have been taken from us. Will we continue to choose life, or will we turn our backs on joy and wonder and merely exist? Very few of us have had to face that decision at the age of 17, but Regina did – on the morning that she

Thoughts on Regina Zielinski z”l by Rabbi Kaminsky

realised that her entire family had been murdered. She chose life that day, and continued to do so through the ten long months of imprisonment in one of the Nazis’ most notorious death camps. It was a choice she made time after time in the many years that followed, despite the obstacles that fate threw in her path.

Regina marked many

anniversaries – both solemn and joyful. Each year, she remembered not only the terrible night when she lost her family, but also the day of the Sobibor rebellion. She also loved to celebrate the anniversary of her arrival in Australia on a snowy winter's day. Indeed, she found endless opportunities to give thanks. Every phone call from a friend was an occasion for celebration! Each time she came to Shabbat morning services, she beamed and spread her happiness amongst us. I never failed to be inspired by her ability to be thankful; certainly, I would not have begrudged her permission to be bitter after all that she had been through. But bitterness was not part of her nature.

Generosity most definitely was. She gave generously of herself to the members of this community, but even more so beyond. Thousands of school students were privileged to hear her tell her stories. She once showed me the thick folders she kept of the thank you notes she had received over the years. Clearly, the students had been deeply moved by hearing her speak. Regina said on a number of occasions that she believed the reason God had let her live was so that she could tell her story. And tell she did, for many years. We can have no doubt that her memory is a blessing; if she was such a blessing in life, and for those of us who were blessed to know her, she must live on in our hearts.

On Friday 12 September, a phone call from Regina Zielinski’s daughter Marie informed us of the sad news that she had passed away peacefully. No sooner had an email gone out to our community than responses started pouring in with tributes to this outstanding lady who touched so many hearts during her lifetime. She will be sadly missed, but always remembered with a smile. At the end of the Shabbat morning service on 20 September, Regina’s Beit Shalom family gathered to celebrated her life by sharing stories and anecdotes. Here are Rabbi Kaminsky’s thoughts on Regina.

passed on to her son and daughter. It is, of course, a tragedy that she has gone, but her memory and legacy survive through her son and daughter.

Many have experienced her life through her work at the Jewish Museum and the fifty or so schools that she talked to about her life, and from the responses from the students, they all revelled in her life’s skill. Her memories will stay with these students as they will with Marie and myself.

Another memory will be related through the Spielberg Foundation’s Holocaust survivors which fortunately is a remaining record of her life. I am not only left with sadness but a raising of hope that l i f e has endl ess possi ble alternatives.

Thank you mum. Thank you Marie for keeping the memory alive.

comes to Beit Shalom

It is a great tribute to one of the contemporary heroines of a life that should be a celebration of the life of Regina Zielinski from a memorial from her son and her daughter. My mother had an extraordinary life, surviving a saga of accidents, fate and destiny that not only kept her alive with her exceptional memories with a range of an impossible array of features that would have easily submerged most people. These range from her miraculous escape from a death camp, her life in war-torn Germany in the late 40s through to looking after a son beset with medical problems as was her life moving to Australia, living with so many predicaments of ill health. She persevered onwards through an impossible range of doctors and specialists with her indomitable spirit, but she survived all of these difficulties with her characteristic concept of survival which she has

From 15 October Beit Shalom will be hosting an exhibition entitled “Remember the Holocaust—Art and the Holocaust” in the Rose Harrison Hall.

This exhibition is devised and self-funded by Andrew Steiner—artist, historian and Holocaust survivor to commemorate three anniversaries:

 71st anniversary of the Sobibor Uprising, and

 70th anniversary of his failed execution, and

 T h e t r a g e d y o f t h e Hungarian Jewry.

Federal Minister for Education, the Hon. Christopher Pyne MP will be opening the exhibition on Tuesday evening 14 October, after which Andrew will be inviting various metropolitan schools to visit Beit Shalom to view his art work and have discussions with the artist. Members of the Beit Shalom community will also be welcome to view the exhibition which will be on display in the hall until Wednesday 29 October.

The Board of Management wishes to express its thanks to Andrew Steiner for choosing this location for his Holocaust memorial display, and for his continued efforts to educate and share his experiences with the general public and in particular the youth of our nation. Lest we forget ...

We felt very privileged on Saturday 20 September to have Andrew Zielinski join us to share his feelings about his mother Regina Zielinski z”l. Here is what he wrote to his sister Marie to use for his mum’s funeral in Sydney. We wish Andrew and Marie and their loved ones a long life.

Sisterhood Report

Dear all,

In the past month the Sisterhood has enjoyed a couple of cultural events. We went to see The Art

Dealer during the Israeli Film

Festival—a film following a Jewish woman who embarks on a journey to recover family paintings that were stolen by Nazis.

We also enjoyed a spirited discussion at our book club when we discussed Sipping from the

Nile by Jean Naggar. There were

mixed opinions about her memoirs but a very interesting discussion of Egypt, exile and escape. Thanks a lot to Merrilyn Ades for hosting in her usual charming fashion. Our next book club meeting will be on Sunday 9th November at 10.30am. We'll be meeting at the new home of Lorre Zuckerman and we'll be discussing The

Invisible Bridge by Julie

Orringer. This book is set in Paris in 1937 when Andras Lévi, a Hungarian Jewish architecture student, arrives from Budapest with a scholarship, a single suitcase, and a mysterious letter he has promised to deliver to C. Morgenstern on the Rue de Sévigné. Hope to see some of you there.

Some of you may know that our Sisterhood Treasurer Pam Vroom has been unwell. On behalf of the Sisterhood I’d like to wish her a very speedy recovery, and we look forward to seeing her back amongst us very soon.

Wishing you all the best for the High Holy Days and a sweet New Year.

Regards,

Over the weekend of 6th September, JAZY had it’s first ever outreach from the youth movement Hashomer Hatza’ir or Hashy.

Four Bogrim and the Hashy Shaliach all drove down to Adelaide from Melbourne together with lots of enthusiasm (and Glicks Challah), ready and excited for the weekend.

The outreach kicked off on Saturday with a family Shabbat picnic in Botanic Park. Hashy taught us some new games and we ate the many different Hummouses that people had brought to share. We then said goodbye to the juniors and their families and had an afternoon and evening of senior programs in which we discussed the value of informal education and ate pizza.

We were then up bright and early on Sunday morning to come to Cheder at Beit Shalom and run a couple of programs for the juniors in which we looked at the value of community and played lots of games.

It was a great weekend and we look forward to having Hashy back to JAZY in the future. Charlotte Gillespie Jewish Adelaide Zionist Youth Mazkira (chairperson) 2014 Netzer Adelaide Representative
