President’s Report

Well, there has been a lot to reflect on this year and this would have been another. This newsletter would, normally, be the ScaleACT wrap up. But alas – we now look forward. As you are all aware, we are changing things up a bit next year – mainly to bring the membership together again, to share skills, tips and techniques and the like and basically just get back together and build.

The first instance will be our February Club one-day club meeting in Holt. It will be a multi-facetted day between a club-based competition that will flow into group builds and workshops. It will also be an opportunity for the Committee to test out some revised processes that we will test run prior to next year's ScaleACT and, depending on the success of the day, it could well lead to similar events throughout the year. This will mean that for certain months, the Wednesday evening meeting will be replaced by a one-day event, likely to be held on a weekend. There will be more details on the February event further on in this newsletter and updates will be on both email and Facebook. You will recall that we have already announced the (Club members only) competition categories last newsletter.

Talking of ScaleACT, the date is set as 30-31 October 2021 so as to de-conflict from the Wagga event the weekend before and to give our membership some space before the Avalon Air Show – which I believe is now being advertised as 26-28 November. We have also taken the opportunity to revise the Grail competition. The Grail theme was RAAF orientated, based around the RAAF's centenary. But since we already have a RAAF

themed special category we decided not to double up and instead opted to change the Grail accordingly. We are now going forward with a Halloween open theme and rather than being prescriptive – if your entry can be associated by name or concept to Halloween or Halloween symbology then it can be entered. The category is pretty open – just be creative as long as you can link it back.

So here are some thought themes to start you off:

The Colours of Orange and Black are synonymous with Halloween, so are pumpkins (jack-o-lanterns). Witch symbols are still some of the most traditional Halloween images around. Bats, black cats, skeletons, skulls, spiders, blood, broomsticks and ghosts are common Halloween symbols. A classic reference to blood in

Halloween culture is the vampire with blood dripping down the side of his mouth. Owls have also long been associated with Halloween and magic, just ask Hedwig on Harry Potter.

So, top of my head: Black Cats – Catalinas. Ghosts – the Ghost and Goblin engine powered many early UK jets. Ghosts – F-4 Phantoms. Vampires – the jet fighter but also HMAS VampireBats - 9 SQN RAF, BAT 21 - the callsign of RB-66 shot down in Vietnam and subject to the movie. Witches – Polikarpov Po-2 of the Soviet female "night witches". And there are many instances of nose art and callsigns that can be linked back to a Halloween theme or symbol.

Finally, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all and your families.

ACTSMS President Tony Allocca

VP’s Corner

Hi everyone, 2020 is over and what a year it has been. As this newsletter is going to press the New Year is about to commence with regrettably more uncertainty. Just as we welcomed back our interstate members over the last few months and things seemed to be going back to normal COVID has sprung upon us again and regrettably looks to make for an interesting few months ahead.

We will continue to follow all ACT and Federal Health advice in the relation to COVID to ensure we run safe meetings for all to attend. Please monitor the ACTSMS Facebook page and email to be kept up-to-date with changes due to COVID. We apologise if these changes may affect you and thank you for your understanding if they do.

Next year we will continue the longer three-month group builds, I will also be looking at introducing a few other things like monthly themes so we can get some completed models at our meetings or give you an opportunity to bring a model back out that people might not have seen for a while. I’m still short on a few group build and theme ideas so please reach out to me and I’ll work to include any ideas over the next twelve months. Space in the program will also be found to reintroduce a form of formal judging briefing/classes/tutorials as there have been a few requests lately.

The club is about building scale models and that is where the focus for entertainment at monthly meetings will be aimed towards.

Tony touched on the possibility of some meetings being moved to one-day events, this opens up a lot more opportunities for us to be able to run things, and if this can be arranged and deemed feasible it will only be a positive. It will allow more hands-on demonstrations, one-on-one mentoring and be a lot more

From the Editor

As Tony had mentioned above, this year-end edition of the newsletter would normally have been one focussed on wrapping up ScaleACT for the year. Instead, we have content covering some of the planned future events, changes that we will need to make in order to run those events successfully, and a look back at the Special Category winners for this year’s online Kittyhawk Cup, Sentinel Shield and The Grail.

Finally, 2020 is over. Here’s wishing all of us a much better year ahead!

Editor Min Hwang

Treasurer’s Waffle

As I write this in the week before Christmas, I would like to wish all our members a safe and enjoyable Christmas break, hopefully COVID has not impacted your celebrations and you can still spend time with family and friends here in Canberra.

At the Swap and Sell in November we had 4 new members join, 2 of them juniors. Please make them welcome at the January meeting.

The society now has over 100 financial members –compared to the 88 at the same time last year. It’s never too late to become financial though and you can still pay direct to the society’s account, online via the webpage or come and see me at the monthly meeting.

As always, if you are interested in seeing ‘the books’ come and see me.

Chief Judges’ Spotlight

Monthly People’s Choice

What a year 2020 has been! A real challenge dealing with all the life changes and natural catastrophes, but at the same time there has been clear evidence of increased productivity and output of finished models by many members. The monthly People’s Choice competition kicked off again when our in-person club meetings resumed, and both Dave and I were blown away by the sheer number of models presented each month! To date, we have had 3 People’s Choice competitions – in the months of September, October and November 2020.

Because there were so many entries in the September competition (32 models on the table!), we split the aircraft category out separate to other entries.

Winners for the month were David Low with his Buffalo, and Phil Hastie with his A-7D Corsair II.

Tony Allocca took out the October competition with his 77 Sqn Mustang

The November winner was Eric O’Brien with his Caribou

We are also keeping a tally of points and entries; these go towards the yearly Modeler of the Year and Exhibitor of the Year awards. 3 months in and here are the top three standings so far.

Competition Judging and Awards

The Committee, over the past year, has had numerous discussions over the growing number of entries seen at our annual ScaleACT events. Whilst it is encouraging to see this growth, it is also causing some concern over how we will be able to accomplish all that we need to do in order to fully judge all the entries we see on the tables in the time we have available to ourselves and the constraints we face in terms of hours of access to the venue. In short, we cannot go with ‘after hours closed-door’ judging – that option is simply not available to us.

As a result, the Committee and Chief Judges have agreed on a system whereby an initial ‘triage’ will be

performed by teams of assessors. This triage/assessment process will look at the entirety of the models entered in each category and determine from the group a shortlist of finalists (minimum of 3 but could be 5, depending on the size of the category). This triage/assessment process will be conducted in accordance with the club’s formal judging criteria in documented assessment sheets. Winners are not determined at this stage.

Upon completion of the triage/assessment process, the finalists will be formally judged by the Chief Judges. Individual winners in each category will be picked, with no allocations for Second and Third placings. This is to ensure speed and efficiency in the process, again to allow us to cope with what we anticipate to be a very high number of entries we are likely to see at ScaleACT 2021.

We understand that this is quite a departure from the way we used to do things, in particular the initial

assessment process selecting finalists rather than winners and the determination of only the first-place winners for each category by the Chief Judges. The facts of the matter are that it remains, and has always been, the prerogative of the Chief Judge(s) to select the winners, and determination of second and third placings take an inordinate amount of time that we can ill-afford over the competition period.

Other Administrative Changes

To try and optimise the things further, we will be moving to an online-only competition entry process. No on-the-day entries will be accepted as these are very time-consuming and leave the organisers prone to errors in recording entry details and category placements.

To make things simpler for entrants as well as organisers, the list of categories will be fixed – what we publish in our official channels (the ACTSMS website, Facebook page, email and newsletter) will be the definitive list of categories we will run the competition against on the day. There will be no splits or consolidations, and there will NOT be a requirement for a minimum number of entries for any particular category.

These administrative changes, along with the judging process described above, will be trialled at the February One Day event. It is our hope that the benefits will become clear, as well as any tweaks we may need to make.

Facebook Group Rules: A Reminder of the Standards of Conduct

Over the time that I have been involved in the Committee we have been fortunate that we have rarely had to moderate or delete any offensive or inappropriate posts from our Facebook site. So, a timely reminder of the rules.

The Facebook site is for members of the ACT Scale Modellers Society and guests. Please be polite and respectful of all and restrict posts to scale modelling related topics. Please do not invite anyone – have them instead ask to join. There are questions to be answered to prove that they are not "robots" as part of the request. If there are no answers then their request is declined.

Language

Any language that is deemed to be inappropriate, sniping, or offensive in any manner will result in the post being deleted and, depending on the severity of the language or the offense, that member will at the least be reprimanded, blocked or removed from the site.

Please note that the Committee is empowered by the ACT's Associations Incorporation Act 1991 (the Associations Act) to expel any financial member.

Timings

6:00pm – Dinner in the Bistro 7:30pm – Administration 7:40pm – People’s Choice

7:50pm – Build night commences 9:15pm – Raffle draw

January meeting in detail

We will be starting 2021 with a relaxed build night with a focus on the juniors, Toyworld will also be assisting with this. For people that are not required to help in the mentoring of a junior, there will be plenty of space for you to enjoy a quiet evening of gluing bits of plastic together.

The January meeting will be a good opportunity to commence your next group build project being ‘‘Anything RAAF.’’ See 2021 group builds for more details.

Meeting Themes – this is something new we are going to bring in for 2021 for an opportunity to bring some of those previously completed models back out for everyone to see or give you an idea to build something for the next upcoming meeting. The January meeting will fall near Australia Day, so theme for the January meeting will be ‘Royal Australian Air Force’. Simply bring in your favourite completed model of a Royal Australian Air Force subject and receive one free raffle ticket for the evening’s raffle.

As usual, we will have People’s Choice running and for those that wish to grab a meal before the meeting, a table will be booked at Hellenic Club Bistro, but please make sure you RSVP when requested to do so.

One Day Club Event – Saturday 13 February 2021

Given the difficult decision to cancel ScaleACT for 2020 we’ve been looking at other options around what we could do as a club and how we judge the models you’ve been busily preparing while stuck at home for longer than planned.

So, what better way to farewell 2020 and start 2021 than with a modelling themed day at our one-day event in Holt. Min had previously covered off on the judging categories in the last newsletter, these will be re-posted again below for your convenience.

The event will be held at the Holt Neighbourhood Hall (80 Beaurepaire Crescent, Holt) on Saturday 13 February. We’ve booked the venue for a full day so that gives us heaps of time with set up and clean-up to maximise activities throughout the day. The hall itself is a 2272m room with two other meeting rooms at the back and is fully air-conditioned and heated so it gives us great flexibility. Kippax Fair is also close by so food (or last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts or cards in case you forget) won’t be a problem.

One of the things we’re keen to explore, and you will have seen Pete’s Facebook post about options for further one day events, is what we can do with this space if we go for further meetings here. We’ve already explored the availability of the hall for further Saturday events and it looks like a good, reasonably priced option if we go down that path.

And now, to the day itself. We’ll be getting a programme out shortly however we’re planning it as a members-only event (as Tony noted in the last newsletter it’s a throwback to the early days of how the Club ran a members-only competition and might be an opportunity to dust off all those 70s and 80s clothes you’ve got stashed away). This will also give us a chance to test and refine some of the procedures we’re looking at for ScaleACT 21.

We’re very keen to have other activities on the day so the competition doesn’t dominate the event and your thoughts on what you would like to see, or what you can offer, would be greatly appreciated.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all again in 2021. It certainly has to be an improvement on 2020 and what better way to start the big 2021 modelling events than with our day at Holt.

Model and Build Showcase: Oshkosh M-ATV

The Oshkosh M-ATV is a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle developed by the Oshkosh Corporation. Powered by a 7.2 Litre inline Caterpillar C7 engine, with an Operational range of 320miles (510km).

I decided to model the USA version of the model, but you can also do a Polish version if you wish as decals are included in the kit.

The kit, I purchased from a local hobby shop in Canberra Australia (Toy World Canberra) as a project to do as a break from my normal modelling of cars and bikes. The Model was built out of the box with the only extra being the Rye Field Radio set, as the radios are not included in the main model and look strange if not added.

Scale 1:35 Brand Rye Field Model MRAP A-ATV

Paints Used • Primers where Mr Hobby grey and Black 1500 • SMS Metallics (Australian Brand)

• Testors Army Sand (this colour is not available so I would suggest SMS)

• Testors Insignia yellow as it is a close match to CAT yellow.

• Tamiya LP paints

• Games workshop Null Black Wash

Tamiya’s LP range of paints were used throughout due to their rapid drying time, and good choice of colours. Weathering was kept quite simple. Using a range of AK Interactive and Vallejo products

AK Light mud (weathering)

AK Rust (weathering)

AK Oil stains (weathering)

Vallejo Pigments Light Sand and Dark Sand

The model was built is small sub-assemblies as this is the method I am used to with building cars and bikes, I also find this a much easier way to paint items and then bring them together. The instructions were followed pretty much as seen in the instructions, with careful attention placed on when to paint items so as to be able to move onto and complete the next stage.

(14)

Painting, primers used were straight from the Mr Hobby cans. All other colours were sprayed with my Iwata airbrush, using a 0.35mm needle setup at around 25psi. Some detail painting was done with a small OO size paint brush. Once areas of paint were dry (Lacquer and Enamel) a light wash of Games workshop Null Black was applied to bring out the detail.

(15)

The kit wound up taking me about three weeks to build. A vignette will now be made to display the model, hence the reason for not weathering the tyres yet as I do not know the colour of the ground for the base yet. In conclusion Rye Field make a great kit, with really no need for any extras, such photo etch as this is included in the model. The only extra I would suggest is the Rye Field Radio set as the main kit does not come with the radios.

Modeler in Profile: Phil Keene

How long have you been a member of the ACTSMS? I've been a member of ACTSMS for about 22 years, can't remember exactly when I joined the Club. What is/are your favourite modelling subject(s)?

Ha ha! This is a difficult question, it changes so often, I can only tell you that at the moment (this week) I'm very partial to 1/48 contemporary Russian/Soviet aircraft, I can only concentrate on 1 subject at a time.

Big stash or small stash?

Big stash or small stash is a very subjective question I tend to think of my stash as smallish-medium, although my wife might disagree.

What, if anything, do you listen to while you build? Sorry I don't listen to anything while I'm modelling. Do you have any hobbies other than scale modelling? If so, what are they?

Stupid question, there is only one hobby, everything else is only a pastime.

What's your favourite model kit company?

I would have to go with AMK their level of detail, accuracy and ease of construction are second to none, closely followed by Tamiya's current crop of subjects.

(17)

Modeler in Profile: Min Hwang

As Editor, I figured it’s time I put my money where my mouth is and write a little something about myself for the Profile section. How/when did I get into the hobby?

My earliest recollection was when I was 6 years old: I was at school and had in my hot little hands a small truck ‘kit’ consisting of no more than half a dozen parts. I went to the school canteen and picked up a razor blade for 5 cents to cut the parts off the sprue – yes, they sold razor blades to 6-year-olds back in the good ole days! And… prior to cutting the parts, I decided to test the blade for sharpness. On my thumb.

I don’t remember how I explained the blood on my uniform whites to my parents, but they didn’t get a look at my left hand for weeks as I kept it resolutely hidden behind my back the whole time.

I also vividly remember the very first time I realised I could actually ASK for what I wanted for a birthday present – I asked for a 1/72 Hasegawa F-15C! That was around my 8th birthday.

Have I been modeling the entire time?

No, I have not. Like most people, I neither had the skills, tools nor resources as a child growing up. I was not able to achieve the level of standard I saw in my mind’s eye for my models and as such my

enthusiasm waned as did my modeling efforts.

It wasn’t until about 10 years ago that I started getting back into the hobby again, this time with the ability as an adult to purchase tools and equipment (and kits!). There was also a gap in that period that saw me having to focus my time and attention on obtaining a Master’s degree, and the subsequent arrival of my two children. So, in reality I’ve only been modeling seriously in the past 5 or so years. What are my areas of interest?

When I first started out, I was 100% a 1/72 modern jets kinda guy. U.S. F-15s, 14s, 16s and 18s were my main focus and, along with Star Wars sci-fi stuff, really all I wanted to build. Then I discovered

Soviet/Russian subjects. In 1/48 scale. Eeep!

2020 saw me focus almost exclusively on 1/48 MiGs, Sukhois, and Yaks! What are my absolutely indispensable tools/paints?

I consider sanding sticks and good quality nippers to be absolute game-changers. I have a set of Flory sanding sticks and sponges that I purchased years ago that I am still in no danger whatsoever of needing to replace. As for nippers, I am currently using the Runway 13 ‘Kodachi’ single-blade from Peter Shum, alongside Tamiya’s No.123 side cutters (which are double-bladed, but with pointier tips).

For general paints I use Tamiya and Gunze acrylics. I’ve recently tried the AK Real Colors paint – these perform the same as Tamiya and Gunze, but (I find) with much greater pigment density. I used RC336 MiG25/MiG-31 grey for my Foxbat build and must confess that I’m a big fan. Am definitely looking to get more of the AK Real Colors paint in the near future.

(18)

And we can’t talk about paint without mentioning metallics! I’ve never tried Alclads but I have used AK Xtreme Metals to great satisfaction (thanks Ben Frohling!). However, my absolute favourite right this very moment is the Mr Color Super Metallic 2 paints! Properly thinned and sprayed, these give fantastic metal finishes over a gloss black base. The Super Metallics also offer a finish that I can safely mask over, as opposed to the Xtreme Metals which I find then to result in adhesive residue when masked over, even with de-tacked Tamiya tape!

I use Mr Hobby Leveling Thinners to thin my paint, sprayed through Iwata airbrushes (0.3mm and 0.5mm). I reserve my Runway 13 Nozomi airbrush for clear coats. Powering my airbrushes is a Sparmax TC-620. My airbrushes are flushed and cleaned with acetone after each and every paint session. What’s my stash like?

It scares me to think just how large my stash has gotten. I think I’ve really taken that whole ‘I-can-now-afford-to-get-what-I-like’ business just a step too far and well and truly crossed the S.A.B.L.E. line (Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy). I know I have too many, I know I will never be building all of them (particularly my Soviet/Russian collection in 1/72 now that I’m doing those very same subjects in 1/48), but can I bring myself to sell them off? I still can’t answer that one!

What, if anything, do you listen to while you build?

Mainly scale modeling podcasts such as On The Bench, the Plastic Posse Podcast, and Plastic Model Mojo. I am also subscribed to the Fighter Pilot Podcast, which I find hits all the right spots for me and my interest in combat aviation!

Do you have any hobbies other than scale modelling? If so, what are they?

As a wise man once said (Phil!), that’s a stupid question – there is only one hobby, everything else is only a pastime! Seriously though, between family and work, there is precious little time left over for anything else.

Closing thoughts.

I do take immense enjoyment out of being part of a community of like-minded scale modelers, though, and am happy to be able to contribute in any way I can. My personal ethos with regards to scale modeling is that this is a hobby for us as individuals to enjoy; I absolutely do not subscribe to the idea of building to other peoples’ ideals, and I reject the censure from rivet counters and elitists in the hobby who try to make others conform to their own set of beliefs.
