Report on IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing South Italy Chapter (IEEE Italy Section) activities for 2009
The Chapter has been formally appointed 25 April 2003. The Subgroup ID Number for the Chapter is CH08380.
The executive committee is presently composed by: Maurizio Migliaccio (University of Napoli Parthenope) as Chairman; Antonio Iodice (University of Napoli Federico II) as vice-Chairman, Giovanni Nico (CNR-IAC Bari) as Secretary, Alma Nicoletta Blonda (CNR-ISSIA Bari) as Treasurer.
Next term elections are going to be organized in 2010 in a period of time to avoid conflict with the IEEE Italy Section ones.
The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing South Italy Chapter established at Laboratorio di telerilevamento ambientale – University of Napoli Parthenope has the main goal to promote IEEE GRS activities within the italian southern regions: Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia.
The reference address is at Università di Napoli Parthenope, Centro Direzionale, isola C4, 80143 Napoli, Italy.
The Chairman took part in all IEEE Italy Section executive meetings (Chairman Silvano Donati) wherein he is vice-Chairman and Delegate for GOLD Activities in Italy.
Since its formation the Chapter has organized events not only in Napoli (where the Chapter is established) but also in other Italian regions.
Continuous activity to enlarge interest and participation to IEEE GRS is conducted. In May 2009 the Chapter jointly with the local student branch has organized a celebration of the IEEE’s 125-th Anniversary gathering the local IEEE Fellows (Proff. Giorgio Franceschetti, IEEE Life Fellow, Paolo Corona, IEEE Fellow, Bruno Siciliano, IEEE Fellow and President of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society) to address the relevance of IEEE for young professional. The celebration was also endorsed by the two neapolitan engineering faculties which partecipated with their Faculty Deans.
Then, in December 2009 the Chapter jointly with the local student branch has organized a celebration of the IEEE’s 125-th Anniversary focused on Microwave Remote Sensing at Unione Industriali di Napoli (Enterprises association) in which the best italian thesis projects have been awarded by Prof. Ovidio Mario Bucci, IEEE Fellow and Director of IREA-CNR. The 5 prizes consisted each in a copy of “Physical Principles of Remote Sensing” by W.G. Rees and an IEEE GRS South Italy Chapter certificate. The winners were: Antonio Natale for a thesis developed at Università di Napoli Federico II on “Simulazioni di sistemi SAR bistatici”, Domenico Velotto for a thesis developed at Università di Napoli Parthenope on “Modello BPM per l’osservazione di sostanze biogeniche”, Adamo Ferro for a thesis developed at Università di Trento on “Polarimetric building characterization using very high resolution SAR complex signals”, Tiziano Nannipieri for a thesis developed at
Università di Pisa on “Combinazione coerente di dati SAR per analisi tomografiche”, Sara Marchiotto for a thesis developed at Università di Roma “La Sapienza” on “Ground-based radar remote sensing of explosive volcanic ash eruptions: a numerical study and Alaska case study analysis”.
The speakers included Prof. M.Migliaccio, Roberto Somma, Senior Advisor to the ThalesAleniaSpace CEO, Prof. O.M.Bucci, Dr. A.Cugini in representation of the Enterprises association and the regional Research and University ministry Nicola Mazzocca. The event was hosted at the prestigious Palazzo Partanna – D’Amato room. Local press reported the event.
Within the IEEE GRS pilot project on Webinars, this year it was organized an interactive videoconference of Jay Pearlman, Boeing Company, USA – IEEE GRS Distinguished lecturer - on “The Global Earth Observation System of Systems
(GEOSS)” at Università di Napoli Parthenope in Napoli, 13 January 2009.
