Why prepare for childbirth with a class?

You may be thinking, “Why should I bother with a hospital class for birth? I can get tons of information on the internet or from friends .” A Childbirth Preparation class is the perfect way to get ready for your baby for these important reasons:

• Our nationally-certified instructors can help you sort through what you have heard about birth and separate reality from hype . They teach

evidence-based information and realistic techniques for coping with labor . They will share with you the growing body of research about the ways that birth can be helped or hindered .

• If you are planning to use medication for labor, childbirth preparation classes are perfect to help you understand epidurals (and other medications) and their risks and benefits .

• Classes are fun! Getting to know others facing the same challenges helps to support you during this time . Many lasting friendships begin in class . You and your partner also need time together to learn the skills and gain the confidence needed for labor . • A class will teach you about the routine policies

and practices specific to Good Samaritan Medical Center . It will also give you an opportunity to get to know some of the hospital personnel who work in The Center for Childbirth .

Some women question their ability to labor and birth . They may wonder, “Will the coping techniques I learn really work?” In class you will learn that it is not about breathing, feeling pain or avoiding taking drugs . It is learning that birth works! Coupled with the support given to you by your healthcare provider, partner, family and friends, you will find that birth works for you, too!

While you are pregnant, you comfort, protect and nourish your baby . Breastfeeding is a wonderful way to continue this care after your baby is born .

Making the choice to breast or formula feed is not just a matter of personal preference . There are important differences between breast milk and formula that you should be aware of .

Breast milk provides the best possible food for your baby because it is more easily digested and protects against allergies and illnesses, like painful ear infections, and pneumonia .

Breastfed babies have lower risks for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome/Crib Death), obesity, diabetes and cancer . Breastfed babies get milk that’s perfect for them — fewer tummy aches and less diarrhea or constipation . They get so much holding and cuddling, it is no wonder moms and babies love it! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for at least one year and exclusive breastfeeding until infants are six months old .

You may also be surprised to know that women who breastfeed usually lose their pregnancy weight more quickly and that they have a lower incidence of breast and ovarian cancers .

Breastfeeding has another advantage — it is inexpensive . The cost to breastfeed your baby is less than half the cost of formula feeding .

If you have further questions about breastfeeding classes or resources, call the lactation specialists at Good Samaritan Medical Center at 303-689-4766 . They will be happy to help you!

Baby’s First Ride

Your most precious possession deserves a safe ride home! Infant car seats must be installed correctly to keep your baby safe . Unfortunately, 80%-90% of parents install them incorrectly . Baby’s First Ride is a free service offered to all families delivering at Good Samaritan Medical Center . Simply call the Baby’s First Ride reservation line at 303-908-8326 and make an appointment to have a nationally certified child passenger safety technician check the installation of your seat . The best time to have your car seat checked is before you deliver . The average inspection takes between 15 and 25 minutes . Please allow extra time if you have additional child seats in your car . Baby’s First Ride is a free service to you for as long as your baby is in a car seat .

Whether you are a new parent or a mother-to-be you deserve something special…a relaxing therapeutic massage . Not only is massage relaxing, but it has proven physical and emotional benefits as well . Some research indicates that women who receive regular massage during pregnancy may have shorter labors . Our certified therapists are trained to focus on the special needs of pregnancy and postpartum .

Massage is an awesome gift an expectant mom can give herself . Loved ones can also purchase gift certificates for you to be used at your convenience . For appointments and gift certificates, contact the Health & Healing Center at Good Samaritan Medical Center at 303-689-6580 .

Frequently Asked Questions

About The Hospital Billing Process

Many expectant parents have questions

about the hospital billing process. Some

questions you may have are:

Do I need to pre-register before delivery?

Yes, you should pre-register by completing Baby Business, a pre-admission program which will help you learn how to get billing details taken care of before you arrive . Our registration team may call you to pre-collect your deductible or co-payment, or you may contact the Registration

Department at 303-272-0999 or 1-855-644-5316 . Completing this process helps you spend your time at the hospital resting and getting to know your baby, rather than dealing with billing and business details .

How does billing occur?

When you come to the hospital for delivery, the Registration Department will create a unique account number for your visit . (Bring a copy of your current insurance card with you to ensure the correct billing information is verified .) When hospital services have been provided, charges will be entered in the billing system by the servicing department . Based on the medical record information, a diagnosis code will be entered into the system . The visit is then ready to be billed to your insurance company . Your insurance company will process the claim and they may send you an explanation of benefits (EOB), an explanation of charges your insurance company will cover and what remaining portion of the bill is your responsibility .

Do I need to call my insurance company to

tell them I am having a baby?

Yes, it is a good idea to call your insurance carrier to determine authorization needs, maternity benefits eligibility, and the amounts of your co-pays and deductibles . Also ask how you should add your newborn to the policy . Generally, families have thirty (30) days from the date of birth to add a newborn to their insurance policy .

What do I do if I am uninsured?

Contact our Financial Counselor at 303-689-6323 or the Pricing Coordinator in the Billing Office at 303-272-0714 to see if you qualify for federal aid or charity care . We can also give you information about our discounted Uninsured Maternity Program .

Do I need to pay before I am discharged

from the hospital?

Yes . Co-pays, coinsurance and deductibles are due before or at the time of service . Our registration team would like to collect this portion of your bill, if needed, when you pre-register . Financial Counselors can assist you in developing a payment plan that meets your financial needs .

When will I receive a bill from SCL Health?

You will not receive a statement from SCL Health until after we bill insurance and get a response . This time can vary . We may request your assistance at any time while we are pursuing payment from your insurance .

Who else could I expect a bill from?

You may also receive separate statements from your Pediatrician, Anesthesiologist, Pathologist, or other hospital-related services such as Ambulance or Air Life services, Radiologists, Emergency Physicians .

For additional questions, please contact

our Registration Team at 303-689-6300 or

our Billing Center at 303-813-5300 and a

representative will be happy to assist you.

We have some of the lowest prices on breast pumps in Denver.

The Nursing Nook is a specialty shop located in The Center for Childbirth at Good Samaritan Medical Center . We provide one-stop shopping to meet the needs of expectant and new mothers . Different from a department store clerk, our certified staff can provide you with the information necessary to help you select the right bra, pump or other nursing product .

Our boutique offers knowledgeable staff and some of the lowest prices in the metro area on:

• Products to ease early pregnancy discomforts, such as nausea, breast tenderness and backache

• Nursing bras with styles that fit sizes 32A to 52K

• Breast pump rental, sales, and replacement parts

• Nursing tanks and nightwear

• Nursing pillows and other nursing supplies

• Essential newborn clothing and accessories, including preemies

Choosing a Nursing Bra

If you ask most women, they will tell you that their least favorite item to shop for is a bra . The Nursing Nook is here to help you . Different from a department store clerk, our staff has the knowledge to assist you in finding the right nursing bra . The right bra will make breastfeeding easier and more discreet .

You should select a nursing bra during the final weeks of pregnancy or right after your baby is born . Because of the many breast changes, fitting too early in pregnancy may result in a poor postpartum fit and can lead to breastfeeding problems . We recommend having at least three nursing bras .

Features to look for are breathable fabrics and straps that don’t dig into your shoulder . It’s also important that you are able to manipulate the cup openings with one hand (your other one will be holding your baby!) . For more information about The Nursing Nook, see page 19 .
