Objects
• Objects are given familiar names
What are Universes made of?
• There are three types of object in a Universe:
Dimensions
Details
Measures
…can be combined with …
Supplier name Supplier code
Author Total items
…to gain more information on an entity.
…to analyse summary information.
Using the MIS server
• Currency of data versus performance
Your client Workstation
You run the Query in a Browser A report is displayed Decisions Server The query is converted to SQL The report is generated Alto Database The SQL is executed to extract the data
Important concepts
• Objects
– InfoView – all sorts of files
– Universes – dimensions, details and measures
• Documents
– Web Intelligence or Desktop Intelligence documents
• Reports
– Formatted output from a query/queries
No – Aggregation!
Item types and loan types included in table, totals broken down to reflect this.
Loan types have been removed – totals aggregated as a result
Item types removed and Loan types re-instated
Note: Total of all issues and renews has remained the same
Practical work through of functionality
• InfoView
– layout, folders and categories, viewing, refreshing and saving documents
• Edit Query

• Edit Report

Filters
When can they be applied?
• Query filter
• Report filter
• At both stages
Query filters
• Benefits
– Retrieves just the data needed for the specific query
– Minimises data returned so optimises performance of the document
• However – query filters add performance overhead on the
server
---• Objects don’t have to appear in the results object pane in
order to be used in a filter
Restricting Data
• Object – Operator – Operand
Types of query filter:
• Single-value and multi-value filters
• Lists of values
• Prompted filters
• Complex filters
Some Synchronising Rules
1. You can only link on dimension objects.
2. The dimension objects do not have to have the same name.
3. The dimension objects must have a common data format.
4. Although actual values do not have to be the same, all data
held in the microcube is case sensitive and therefore any common values must be in the same case.
5. The format of the values must be the same.
6. Any number of queries can be linked by common dimension
objects.
7. Any number of dimension objects can be merged between
Drilling
