UMLOA Training Guide for Level 2 Boys Lacrosse Officials
This course is intended for adults (at least 18 and out of high school) and high school seniors who have officiated boys lacrosse in Minnesota in prior years. This training guide shows everything you need to do to complete your training. Complete all requirements by April 10 to officiate in the spring or by June 10 to officiate in summer.□ Register for UMLOA training (must be done first)
Go to http://laxtraining.activemoodle.com/amember/signup/returningOfficial and register for Level 2 Training. You can pay the $109 fee by credit card or PayPal. This includes the cost of your classroom, on-field, and online training in addition to most of your uniform and equipment and your NFHS rule book. If you have a US Lacrosse membership already, use the same email address to register as you have on file with USL.
□ Join US Lacrosse (must be done within 48 hours of registering for training)
Renew your membership at www.uslacrosse.org/membership.aspx and specify that you want to be a boys lacrosse official; your lacrosse officials association is the Upper Midwest Lacrosse Officials Association (UMLOA). Please be sure to use the same email address with US Lacrosse as you use for registering for UMLOA training.
You must have an expiration date of 9/30/16 or 9/30/17. If you don’t, you have the wrong membership type and m u s t contact US Lacrosse membership to get “official” added to your membership type; see www.uslacrosse.org/about-us-lacrosse/contact-us.aspx for contact info.
□ Disclose conflicts
If there are any teams or schools for which there is the possibility of any perception of a conflict (e.g., you work for the school or district, you have a relative on the team, you played or coached in that team’s system in the past 5 years), email those teams or schools to [email protected] for high school and youth teams. Note which teams you do not want to be assigned to as well as which teams there could be a perception of a conflict but where you do not believe it will be a problem.
Note that, while we can block you from these teams during the high school and youth regular season and playoffs, there may be situations in off-season leagues and tournaments where you realize when you get to the field there is a possible conflict. In those situations, switching with an equally-qualified official from another field is acceptable (inform the assigner after the game); if you cannot, it is best to disclose the conflict to the coaches prior to the game but to officiate the game.
□ Physical preparation
Lacrosse officiating is a strenuous activity. It is strongly recommended that you consult with your physician before beginning to officiate or do physical training for officiating.
Running is part of the job as an official. You should prepare yourself to meet the demands of the job by undertaking a training program approved by your physician. Do not make yourself “ready to be assigned” in ArbiterSports.com until you are confident you can meet the physical demands of the job.
□ Set up your Arbiter account (must be done before on-field training)
You should already have an Arbiter account if you are a returning official. You must correctly set blocks before you will be assigned an field training. If you don’t set blocks, you will not be assigned an on-field training session. Also, completely block all days between the current date and the date by which you will have your classroom session and online sessions that are required prior to your on-field training. Be sure to check the “ready to be assigned” checkbox once your account is set up.
□ Concussion training (must be done before on-field training and final exam)
Verify your name appears in the database at http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/lowerlevelreport2.asp and that your “date completed” is no later than December 31, 2012. If your date completed is before that, complete the online course at http://mshsl.org/mshsl/showConcussion.asp, verify your name appears in the database at http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/lowerlevelreport2.asp, and then send an email to
[email protected] with the subject line “Level 2 Training Concussion Course Completed” NOTE: The course will not show completion if using a new version of Internet Explorer or a mobile browser. You can download Chrome, Firefox, etc. for no charge. You must be able to enter your name at email address at the end in order for me to accept your concussion training. NO EXCEPTIONS!
□ Order uniform and equipment (must be done roughly 3 weeks prior to on-field training)
Go to http://zebrawear.com/UMLOA and select the lacrosse officials timer. You will be billed 1¢ just to make the order go through; the rest of your order is already paid for via your course fees.
□ Put together personal equipment not included in starter package
You are responsible for supplying some uniform items on your own. You may have some of this already. See http://www.umloa.org/uniforms/ for information about what you need. Be sure to get a tape measure.
□ Register for 3 hours of returning officials classroom training sessions (must be done at least 1 week before session)
Go to http://tinyurl.com/registerumloa to register for 3 hours of additional classroom training, which can be done at the UMLOA Super Clinic or can be chosen from the “Level 1 Recert/Level 2/Returning

□ Study rules (prior to final exam)
You should have been issued a 2016 NFHS Boys Lacrosse Rule Book, and the 2016 Minnesota Youth Rules are provided to you in your online course. Study both documents. Don’t be afraid to highlight or otherwise mark up the book to help you remember and study.
□ US Lacrosse exams
Follow the instructions at http://tinyurl.com/USLacrosseTests and take both the US Lacrosse NFHS Rules test and the US Lacrosse Youth Rules test (Note: on the youth exam, you will need to answer questions using the US Lacrosse rules and not the Minnesota rule variations; the “Youth Rules” online course will list which questions have different answers from Minnesota rules). When you have a score of at least 90% on each, send one email with screen shots of both scores to [email protected] with the subject line “Level 2 USL Test Scores.”
□ Final steps
When you have completed all of the above steps, email [email protected] with the subject line “Level 2 Training Completed.” Send the email from the same account you are using for your USL membership and your Arbiter account, and include your full name and your grade in high school for the 2015–2016 school year (even if you are completing the class in June) or “adult” if you are over 18 and currently out of high school.
