NOTE: A test over Fahrenheit 451 and the series of fairy tales will be given the first week of school. Be sure to READ all of these works in entirety. Failure to have the completed assignments when you pick up your class schedule will result in being

dropped from Pre AP English II. You are expected to be prepared and able to keep up in this rigorous, demanding course.

II. Essay

In a 500 word essay, describe in detail the role of censorship in the novel. Use concrete

examples that support your essay. The essay should be typed, Times New Roman, 12 font, double-spaced, and include all other aspects of MLA format. Visit the links on my teacher

for formatting).

Fairy Tales

I. Go to http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/grimmtales.html and read the following original Grimms brothers fairy tales:

Cinderella

Rumpelstiltskin

Hansel and Gretel

Rapunzel

Little Snow White

II. Write a brief synopsis/summary of each fairy tale.

III. For each fairy tale, research how the originals have been censored and changed to be appropriate for children today. You may want to watch the modern-day Disney versions for comparison.

IV. CREATIVE WRITING: Write your own original fairy tale using common fairy tale elements. Illustrations will receive extra points.

FINALLY…

You have been reading examples of the role of censorship in society. Write a 500-700 word essay (typed, double-spaced, 12 font, Time New Roman, MLA format) in which you argue whether or not censorship has its place in society. Use concrete examples from the summer reading assignment list along with outside/other examples to support your stance on the controversy. Be sure to include a works cited page!!!
