Where is UNED

The UNED campus is spread across Faculties, Colleges and Centers in Madrid and the extensive network of Asso-ciated Centers throughout Spain and abroad.

Although UNED is designed so that studying can be done when and where the student deems appropriate,

sig-nificant on-site support is available to students at the 61 Associated Centers and the network of more than of

100 university lecture halls distributed throughout Spain´s Autonomous Communities. In addition, there are 12 centers in 11 countries in Europe, America and Africa.

The Centers are units of UNED´s academic structure which serve as support for its educational system. Every

UNED student must be attached to an Associated Center. Students can opt for the center they find most conve -nient, based on their place of residence or any other circumstance. The attachment is formalized upon completion of the registration forms.

The Associated Center is the regular channel through which face-to-face interaction between the University and the student takes place. The Associated Center offers on-site tutoring, organizes the holding of examinations, and channels and provides information on those aspects pertaining to the student´s university activity. It also provides the student with support facilities such as a library, laboratories and computer rooms, as well as books-tores to purchase the recommended course preparation materials, including assessments for distance learning.

UNED, your ticket to future

Through its extensive distribution of centers, classrooms, libraries and professor-tutors throug-hout Spain and abroad, UNED puts at your disposal the services, qualifications and resources

that any traditional university can offer; however, through UNED you have the freedom to reconcile work and family life with the educational improvement required by the knowledge society in a global world.

UNED is a university where distance is no object for the fact that, through its educational methodology, UNED is the only university that offers the possibility of obtaining formal

quali-fications adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) from anywhere in the world.

Likewise, UNED is the only university with centers in the Americas, Africa, Europe and all the

Autonomous Communities of Spain; finally, training at UNED is carried out using new techno -logies, principally the Internet.

In today’s society, lifelong learning and continuing education is a crucial necessity. To progress and advance, society requires university graduates with extensive and continuously

updated training. Thanks to UNED you can meet this demand for higher qualifications and

continuous upgrading and take your career to greater heights. Our methodology allows you to make a healthy work-life balance compatible with the obtaining of qualifications highly valued by the labor market .

Not only does UNED meet the requirements for any modern university, entering hundreds of

thousands of homes daily through new technologies, but it also fulfills one of the main objec -tives of prestigious academic institutions, namely, the capability of offering content tailored to the times. Moreover, since its inception and to a greater degree than all other universities in Spain, UNED has served an important social support function in facilitating the integration

disability (4,000 during the 2011 course) and people in the penitentiary system (1,000 during the 2010-2011 course).

Thus, the UNED methodology is designed and intended for everyone, especially, those who:

UNED features the most complete and advanced methodology for distance learning, put-ting a whole range of measures and human resources at the disposal of students to enable autonomous learning tailored to their needs and schedules. Based on the use of active me-thodologies in which students are the protagonist of their own learning, this learning system is the underlying concept of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) for the training of professionals capable of taking up the challenges of the knowledge society.

UNED provides instruction by means of a distance learning modality characterized by the use

of a specific didactic methodology. The methodology combines the use of print and audio -visual media with that of new technologies, especially virtual learning communities. There are also various systems of communication between professors and students as well as on-site assistance to students from professor-tutors at the Associated Centers.

This methodology is summarized in the table below: HUMAN RESOURCES FOR STUDENT SUPPORT

Teaching Teams

In the Faculties, teaching teams are responsible for the assessment of learning and the preparation of programs and teaching materials. The student receives support from pro-fessors online, by telephone or via videoconference.

Tutors in the Associated Centers and virtual tutors

Should they wish, students can attend tutorials at the Associated Centers given by specia-lized tutors. Associated Centers also facilitate the formation of study and working groups made up of students from the same center.

Administrative and Service Personnel

More than 1,400 public employees make the operation of the University possible and pro-vide the necessary support for teaching and research staff to carry out their work under the most optimal conditions.

UNED´S Welcome Plan

UNED is aware of how important it is for you, as a new student, to know your University and to integrate into it in the best possible way. UNED is thus particularly keen to put all possible resources at your disposal for you to develop the skills necessary to be a distance student.

To this end, UNED offers you a Welcome Plan for New Students. This plan has three main objectives: 1. Offer you the best information possible for you to fit satisfactorily integrate into the University.

2. Better orient you during the matriculation process so that you matriculate what best suits you and meets your needs and characteristics.

3. Provide you with a range of support resources during your first year and during your formative courses on the specific

methodology of distance learning and the competencies needed to undertake independent learning that is controlled and regulated by you.

(25)

2

In essence, it is intended that you adapt well to the UNED system of teaching and learning and successfully complete your studies.

The Welcome Plan entails a commitment on the part of many: the Rector´s Office, the Central Academic Office and

the Associate Centers (through the collaboration of teaching teams, University Access and First Course Tutors), Admi-nistrative and Service Personnel (PAS) and student representatives. Upper-level students are also being progressively incorporated in various support actions.

To meet the objectives of the plan, UNED has developed, and continues to develop, a wide range of online and

face-to-face activities. What actions do we take to welcome you?: 1. Guidance and information actions

l On the UNED website you have at your disposal texts, links, videos, audio, interactive maps, as well as various

prac-tical guides.

l During orientation for a more reflective matriculation, adjusted to the requirements of the different courses and your

time availability. You can find the template for matriculation planning on the website of the Center for Orientation,

Information and Employment (COIE). Likewise, your Associated Center will help you complete matriculation in the

best possible way. Your Center´s COIE is also available for support during this first stage.

l All this information can also be found on the DVD with UNED´s academic offerings.

l On-site activities such as Open House and Welcoming Workshops at your Associated Center. See the calendar of the

various events, available on the website of your Associated Center.

2. Training Actions

It is advisable that you prepare yourself for distance learning study. To achieve this we would like that you be able to progressively train in the UNED methodology and develop the competencies needed for independent and self-regulated studying and learning.

(26)

2

UNED provides you with this training through various means and at various levels of detail, based on your needs:

l Practical guides online and multimedia materials in “How To Study At a Distance?”.

l Virtual community of new students. As a new student, you will have access from the start to a virtual host

community in which you will find all the new students of your faculty/school. Communities provide information and detailed guidance on UNED and its methodology, as well as suggestions to guide you through your first steps.

l 0-Courses: It is possible that you have not studied formally in a while and need to refresh and level your previous

knowledge in some areas. Thus, in the academic year 2010 – 2011, available online at the UNED Portal of Open

Courses (OCW) will be the following courses with materials, practical activities and self-assessment tests: Physics,

chemistry, biology and mathematics. These courses are particularly aimed at students of the Faculties of Sciences and the School of Industrial Engineering.

l Training Course for Self-Regulated Learning: Available in the 2010-2011 academic year at the UNED OCW

por-tal, this open and self-paced course allows you to learn more about UNED, the methodology of distance education and how to develop strategies to learn in an independent and self-regulated manner. This course, including tutoring and assessment, may also be taken formally as elective credit,. Find out more at the beginning of the school year.

l Training workshops and courses for new students in the Associated Centers. Information on dates and venues

for on-site Welcome Plan courses can be obtained at the website of each Associated Center.

3. Follow-up Actions

UNED has various measures to monitor and support University Access and First-year students over the course of their

first year of study. These actions involve tutors and peer mentors. Contact a Center for Orientation, Information and Employment (COIE) at a Central Academic Office or Associated Center for more information.
