ERASMUS MUNDOS: European Master on Sustainable Construction under Natural Hazards and Catastrophic Events

ECCS announces a pioneer European Master course on Sustainable Steel

Construction (SUSCOS) entitled Sustainable Construction under Natural Hazards and Catastrophic Events led by an international

consortium of top European Universities in the steel construction area.

SUSCOS has the support of a network of associated partners involving Universities, Steel Construction Associations and Companies: Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (Russia);

ArcelorMittal Global R&D (Belgium); ECCS - European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (Belgium); Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (Ukraine); Tongji University (China); Kyrgz State University of Construction, Transport and Architecture (Kyrgyzstan); Univerza v Ljubljani (Slovenia); Associação Portuguesa de Construção Metálica e Mista (Portugal); University of Mosul (Iraq).

SUSCOS aims at top class industry-oriented training offering the candidate the ability and know-how to design and construct steel and timber structures in a balanced approach between economic,

environmental and social aspects, enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness of the steel and timber industry. The courses are lectured in English by academics from all partner institutions and invited teachers from associated members. The first edition (2012-2014) of the course has duration of 3 semesters, from September 2012 to May 2014. The course starts at University of Coimbra (1st Semester) and continue at Czech Technical University in Prague (2nd Semester). For the final semester, the student selects the hosting university amongst the SUSCOS partners.

The degree awarded is a Master Degree (90 ECTS), provided as a multiple diploma. Financial support is available.

ECCS Award for Steel Bridges

The European Convention for Constructional Steelwork organized the 1st ECCS Award For Steel Bridges in 2008.

The objective is to give European recognition to outstanding steel and composite bridges

emphasizing the many advantages of steel in construction, production, economy and architecture. The Awards are opened to steel and composite bridges which steel structures were fabricated in the ECCS full members’ countries. The construction must have been completed and be ready for use within the last three years.

Bridges, footbridges and renovation projects (major retrofit, expansion or rehabilitation) are eligible. All applications were assessed against the following criteria:

. to be of an internationally recognized standard; . to be outstanding in its construction;

. to emphasize the advantages of steel in construction, production, economy and architecture; . to disseminate the knowledge of steel, its many uses, and to draw attention to its development; . to improve the image of steel;

. to interest clients, architects and engineers in using more steel within the entire building sector, thereby making the steel industry competitive.

The Charles Massonnet Award

In 1998, the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork created the "Charles Massonnet Award" to recognize a prominent scientist who highly contributed to the advancement of scientific and technical support to constructional steelwork, and who had worked or is working in a Technical Committee of ECCS as a Full Member or as a Chairman or a Secretary of one of the mentioned committees. It is presented every year.

This Award had been named for Professor Charles Massonnet to keep his memory. Indeed, Professor Charles Massonnet was an eminent expert and academic, but also one of the most leading personalities members of ECCS who contributed to the promotion of the use of steel in construction through his work and his tuition in stability, plasticity and strength of materials.

Born on 14 April 1914 in Arlon, in the Belgian Province of Luxembourg, Professor Charles Massonnet was a scientist of national level (professor at the University of Liège, Belgium) as well as of

international level (Doctor Honoris Causa at the Technology University of Göteborg, in Sweden, the Federal Polytechnical School of Zürich, in Switzerland, Associate Member of the National Academy of Engineering of the United States of America, Foreign Member of the Polish Academia of Sciences). Professor Charles Massonnet passed by on 4th April 1996.

The Charles Massonnet Award is presented in principle every year by an ECCS member association. The members of the board and the official(s) of ECCS will not be eligible for the award during the time of their office.

The nominated person will be proposed to the executive board by the nomination committee and will be submitted to the vote at the spring meeting of the executive board at a simple majority of the members present.

Awards : The Charles Massonnet award consists of a plaque bearing the name of the recipient, the date, and mention of ECCS.
