Virtual Learning is Coming to Maple!

This is a quick update to information we brought to you earlier this year regarding bringing online learning opportunities to the students and families that live within the boundaries of the School District of Maple. We have done research, which included attending symposiums and workshops, over the course of this school year. What we have ended up with is a wealth of infor-mation…almost overwhelming, actually. As a result, we feel that we are within reach of our goal of being able to offer program-ing to those students and families who are currently pursuprogram-ing their learnprogram-ing through online courses via virtual schools and other types of providers.

We have contracted with the Fueleducation company to provide curriculum and courses, elementary through high school age. This is the same company that provides curriculum to such well-known Wisconsin providers as the Wisconsin Virtual School and the Wisconsin Virtual Academy. Other companies we are contracting with include Calvert Education and the Wisconsin Digital Learning Collaborative that has 2,700 courses.

The School District of Maple realizes that parents make the choice to homeschool or open enroll their children for a variety of good and well-thought out reasons. Our goal is to provide you with the same types of freedoms you currently enjoy by providing you with the same or similar type of curriculum you are getting elsewhere, but with the benefit of being connected to your local school district. You will really not have to do anything different from what you are doing, but by being reconnected to Maple schools, you would be able to take advantage of many services and programs you don’t necessarily have access to by being enrolled in a virtual school in another part of the state or by independent home-based education. Some of those things could include: on-site nursing services, career and college planning, participation in various clubs and activities, “blended” curricular opportunities and sports.

Please feel free to contact Mark Carlson, Principal at Northwestern High School Principal if you have any questions.

The School District of Maple is “big enough” to provide opportunities for all to grow, but small enough where everyone matters! We hope to be able to “reconnect” with those who are currently homeschooling or open enrolled to a virtual school in the far cor-ners of the state. You can continue to enjoy all the freedoms you enjoy with the benefit of being able to take advantage of every-thing our various schools have to offer during the school day and after school hours.

Because effective educators are directly linked to student achievement, every student deserves an effective classroom teacher and an effective principal leading their school.

The purpose of the Wisconsin Educator Effectiveness System is to improve student learning by supporting the continuous improvement of edu-cator practice through a performance-based evaluation.

The DPI Educator Effectiveness Team implements and improves the Wisconsin Educator Effectiveness System to ensure that educators re-ceive quality data to identify and inform individual areas of: 1) strength; 2) needed improvement; and 3) ongoing support for professional growth.

Starting last school year, Wisconsin created a new system for evaluating the performance of teachers and principals. The Wisconsin Educator Effectiveness System aims to provide students with highly qualified and effective educators who focus on student learning. The system drives continuous improvement in practices used by teachers and principals—improvement that begins during initial training and continues over the course of each educator’s career—resulting in elevated student learning.

Fair, Valid, Reliable

The Wisconsin Educator Effectiveness System couples performance (50% of the overall rating) with student outcomes (also 50% of the overall rating). The performance rating uses standards-based rubrics, which are based on the work of respected authorities at the national level (Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium, Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium). The student outcomes rating uses multiple measures, including performance on state or district assessments, improvement in scores over time, student or school outcomes, read-ing scores at the elementary and middle level, and graduation rates at the secondary level.

This combination of components provides a framework for evaluation which is fair, valid, and reliable across the state.

Child Developmental Screening

The School District of Maple held a Child Developmental Screening in February. Developmental screenings are used to look at overall devel-opment and will focus on the areas of self-help, communication, motor, social, and learning skills. They are intended to highlight a child’s strengths and/or weaknesses and identify children who may need further testing. Vision and hearing are also screened.

Children participated in specific tasks and in play and parental/guardian input was also a large part of the screening process.

The School District of Maple is required by law to screen all children. On-site screenings are encouraged as they facilitate child and parent participation and provide opportunities for immediate feedback, parent education, and a positive school experience for the child. If you know of any child within the ages of 2 ½ - 4 ½ (those NOT yet eligible for Kindergarten by September 1, 2016), please encourage their parent(s) and/or guardian(s) to call the school to set up a screening date and time.

If you missed the screening dates in February, please call LuAnn Alsleben at Northwestern Elementary School at 715-364-8465, ext. 1319, to

Families of preschoolers in the School District of Maple have the opportunity to complete an application for the 2016-17 school year at the Brule Head Start Center, Family Forum, Inc. The Brule Head Start Center has two classrooms that are staffed by fully licensed and trained staff. The morning class consists of a mix of three- and four-year-olds. The afternoon is a 4K site for the School District of Maple. Children between the ages of 3-4 as of September 1, 2015 participate in learning centers five days a week. Homemade nutritious meals and snacks are served family style to teach children table manners, how to set a table and how to clean up afterwards. Personal hygiene is taught by en-couraging hand washing before and after meals and bathroom breaks, and tooth brushing after each meal. Fully equipped buses provide transportation with five point safety seats for each child. Brule Head Start provides door-to-door transportation to and from a child's home or childcare setting. Early Head Start home-based learning is also available to prenatal women and families with children up to 3 years of age. A highly trained home visitor comes to your home for one and a half hours per week offering family support.

Interested families should call the Brule Head Start at 715-372-8060 or Family Forum's main Office at 1-800-392-4473.

Building Construction Project

Bus Drivers and Mechanics Honored

School District of Maple bus drivers, mechanics, and sub-stitute, special needs and early childhood drivers were hon-ored during “School Bus Driver/Mechanic Recognition Week.” Breakfast was provided on February 11, 2016 at Twin Gables. They were recognized for their dedicated service to the School District of Maple throughout the year. The safe transportation of our students remains our num-ber one priority. A big “thank you” to each of them!

Transportation employees from the School District of Maple enjoyed a delicious breakfast buffet during “School Bus Driver/Mechanic Recognition Week”.

Students in the Northwestern High School Building Construction class have switched things up this year. Rather than the three bedroom home that has been built in the past, they built a versatile building that could be used as a starter house, hunting cabin, lake cabin, or rental house. At just over 800 sq. ft., the two bedroom, one bath dwelling will fit on a varie-ty of building lots. The building features pre-finished half log siding, Marvin windows and doors, 30 year architectural shingles, and a vaulted ceiling in the great room. The inside of the building is completely framed in, ready for the new owners to install utilities and finishes as they would like.
