Dear Kinship Caregiver,

This guide was created as a resource for Kinship families residing in San Diego

County by the YMCA Kinship Program. It is a list of agencies and programs,

which address issues commonly faced by Kinship families and is organized first by

need and then by region of the county that is served. Please see the table of

contents on the next page for a complete list of need topics and corresponding page

numbers. The YMCA Kinship Program provides services to relative caregivers

throughout San Diego County.

The mission of the Kinship program is:

To support to kinship caregivers throughout San Diego County in

achieving safety, permanency, and well-being for their families

through education, advocacy and community collaboration.

The Kinship Program offers a variety of services including:

Kinship Navigator Services:

- Assessment of family needs

- Information and referral

- Education

- Advocacy

- Short-term case management

Case Management Services (more intensive services for families involved in

the child welfare system)

Respite Service (for caregivers who are 55 and older)

In addition to the Kinship Program, the YMCA of San Diego County offers many

community and social services through the programs in the Youth and Family

Services and Childcare Resource Service departments as well as at the 14 branch

sites (swim and gym facilities) located throughout the county. See the YMCA

section of this guide for more information about all branches, departments, and

camps.

Licensed public adoption agency which serves all members of the adoption triad: adoptees, birth families, and adoptive parents. Both voluntary relinquishments as well as adoptions of children from the foster care system are handled by the agency, which is staffed by professional social workers.

Serves adults 65 and older and dependent adults 18 and older, who are harmed, or threatened with harm, to ensure their right to safety and dignity. APS investigates elder and dependent adult abuse, including cases of neglect and abandonment, as well as physical, sexual and financial abuse.

The best way to apply for before and after school care for your child is to call the child's school directly and ask if they offer a free or low-cost after school program.

A partnership of community organizations working together to address the effects of community violence, strengthen the family, and empower the community. ACE offers: mobile response teams, gang awareness, strengthening families, and a leadership academy. Services are offered free of charge throughout San Diego County.

California Youth Crisis Line

A toll-free helpline available 24 hours a day to youth and their families in crisis or need with confidential and non-judgmental crisis-intervention counseling and appropriate referrals to assist callers with issues such as family problems, runaway and homelessness, depression, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, suicide and more.

A free education and training program that helps young people learn a career, earn a high school diploma or GED, and find and keep a good job. For eligible youth at least 16 years of age.

Juvenile Diversion Program

Enables eligible youth, including at risk and high-risk youth, to prevent entry or re-entry into the juvenile justice system. The service target population is youth from 12 to 17 years of age. A USDA supplemental food program for pregnant and postpartum women, infants, children up to age six, and elderly people at least 60 years of age based on income eligibility. *One note about CSFO and WIC: It is illegal to participate in CSFP and WIC at the same time. It is okay for some members in the family to be on CSFP and others on WIC, but the same individual may not participate in both programs at the same time. National School Lunch Program

A federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children who qualify. Schools send school meal applications home at the beginning of each school year. However, you may apply for school meals at any time throughout the school year by submitting a household application directly to your school. Your school will provide you with an application upon request.
